KROBOTH,
Josef
By Walter Michael
KROBOTH,

Artisan, husband, father, "opa," dedicated employee, winemaker.
Born January 8, 1929, in Oberradling, a village on the border
of Austria and Hungary. Died September 29, 2005, in Toronto,
of cancer, aged 76.
Sitting still was something that Joe
KROBOTH rarely did.
I cannot recall a time when Joe did not have at least one project
in the works. He designed and built the family cottage, his home
was well maintained, his garden was immaculate, and every autumn
he made wine.
The importance of hard work, responsibility and resilience was
something Joe learned early in life. Growing up during the Great
Depression and the Second World War, his day consisted of farm
chores before school and assisting his father, the village shoemaker,
in the evening.
Near the end of the war, women and children were evacuated from
the village, but Joe stayed behind to help his father protect
family property. He witnessed hand-to-hand combat and helped
dig graves and bury the dead.
At 17, Joe left home to attend trade school, becoming a master
shoemaker and winning a top prize for his hand-stitched shoes.
A true artisan, Joe would later tell me that his skills were
honed during his youth, when his father would disassemble his
work and make him redo it until the workmanship was exact.
By the 1950s, Joe was established in his trade but looking for
opportunities in North America.
In October, 1954, he emigrated to Canada and settled in Toronto,
where Hurricane Hazel had just devastated the city. Joe's first
job was with a clean-up crew. He went on to do piecework at a
shoe factory but the job did not allow him to be a craftsman.
Frustrated, Joe travelled to Kapuskasing, Ontario, with a friend,
to secure work as a lumberjack. The logging-camp foreman initially
turned him down because he said Joe -- at 5-foot-5 and 138 pounds
was too small to handle the work. Joe asked for a chance to
show his stuff.
Utilizing a vice-like grip and sinewy strength, along with the
ability to handle logging tools, Joe quickly felled and bucked
a tree. He got the job. For nine months, Joe worked dawn to dusk
six days a week, saving enough money to later start a business
and put a down payment on a house.
In 1958, he married Josefa
STEBEGG and the two went on to open
Joe's General Shoe Repair in west Toronto -- and start a family.
By 1964, however, it was clear that the shoe-repair business
was no longer viable. With three children, Joe opted for the
security of a factory job. For 30 years, he made medicinal products,
never missing a day of work.
Despite life's challenges, Joe always maintained a sense of humour.
The consummate family man, Joe enjoyed skating and tobogganing
with my sisters and me and built us a tree house and a playhouse.
Joe also became a doting grandfather, making rocking horses,
with hand-carved faces, for my two daughters.
Despite being a smoker since his teens, Joe never lacked energy
or endurance. In 1988, a friend and I helped Joe build a septic
system at the cottage. Each man had to dig a trench. We were
29; he was 59. A couple of hours into the job, Joe took a cigarette
break so we could catch up.
After retiring in 1994, Joe stayed active helping neighbours
with projects, further solidifying his reputation as a handyman.
A day before he passed, Joe told me that he felt a little "tired"
and would need help making this year's batch of wine. Not surprisingly,
he never stopped thinking about his next project.
Walter is Josef's son.
