Family to celebrate
SHAW's long life
Markdale woman dies at age 108
By Scott DUNN,
Thursday,
November 09, 2006
Mabel SHAW's death Monday after 108 years of life puts her among
a select few.
The Markdale resident made it into the 100-club, an exclusive
group of folks that Statistics Canada estimates number around
3,795 - all but 740 of them women.
It's cause for celebration, not just for living so long, but
doing so with health and faculties intact, said her 83-year-old
daughter, Velma
SPENCER, who lived with her mother in a bungalow.
That's where Mabel
SHAW died, surrounded by family.
SPENCER said she's celebrating her mother's life, not mourning
her loss, for heartfelt reasons shared by
SHAW's large family
which includes 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three
great-great-grandchildren.
"This is a celebration for us. Absolutely no question. We're
all in total agreement about that," she said by telephone Wednesday.
"Just the fact that we were incredibly fortunate to have her
for this long."
SPENCER says the family agrees one key to
SHAW's remarkably long
life was their mutual love. Without that, "she would have seen
it as a sign that we had given up on her and I'm sure she wouldn't
have lived."
Both she and her mother were in good health, so they lived together
comfortably.
SHAW never went to the hospital when her health
started to fail in September. Her family, including a niece who
is a nurse, took care of her.
SHAW told The Sun Times in July, days before her 108th birthday,
that she simply takes life one day at a time.
Raised on a farm, Mabel
SHAW worked as a mother's helper and
at several jobs before marriage, then never worked again outside
the home, SPENCER said.
In the early years of their marriage, Earl
SHAW carried the mail
in Thornbury and Clarksburg, at first on horseback, then with
a horse-drawn bus. Earl worked on other people's farms, including
his son's, until he bought his own 50 acres in his 60s. He died
in 1993 in his 90s.
"Age is only a number as far as I'm concerned. Just don't think
about it. It's not going to change anything, believe me,"
SPENCER
said. "And my son-in-law once told me when I questioned him,
he said well, he didn't care for the alternative."
Mabel SHAW will be seen at the May Funeral Home in Markdale today
from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Her funeral is to
be held Friday at 1: 30 p.m. with interment to follow at the Markdale
Cemetery.
