KURKJIAN,
Mary
Katherine (née
SIMPKINSON)
Passed away peacefully on November 10th at Sunnybrook Hospital,
surrounded by family including her beloved husband of 46 years,
Raymond KURKJIAN.
Born in Trail, British Columbia, in 1937, Mary-Kaye
studied ballet at Balmoral Hall in Winnipeg before moving to
Toronto to dance and to study at Trinity College, University
of Toronto, where she earned her B.A. in English in 1960. After
marrying Ray that year, the young couple settled in Don Mills,
where they raised their three children, Peter, Paul, and Margaret.
In later years, Mary-Kaye returned to teacher's college in preparation
to fulfill a life-long dream of becoming a teacher. Along with
her professional work teaching English as a second language,
Mary-Kaye found countless hours to volunteer in her church congregation,
her children's schools, and in the broader community. The organizations
in which she was active reflected her passionate desire to serve
the disadvantaged; they included Saint Mark's Affordable Housing,
Saint Mark's Daycare Centre, Tobias House, the Family Action Network,
and the Footprints Daycamp. Mary-Kaye is survived by brothers
William and David
SIMPKINSON, children-in-law Maureen, Jackie,
and Scott, and by the nine grandchildren who lit up her final
ten years: Madeleine, Max, Nathalie, Audrey, Veronica, Anthony,
Liam, Renée and Luke. Arrangements have been made to celebrate
her life this Tuesday, November 14th at 11 a.m. at Saint Mark's
Presbyterian Church in Don Mills. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made in her honour to the Canadian Cancer Society.

She was blessed with good health throughout her long life, despite
defying almost every medical precept. Eve's sense of humor, outrageous
as it often was, endeared her to many Friends. Her love of family
will remain with her sons, Jeffrey and Richard, her daughter-in-law

well dance." Following cremation, a private family celebration
