Mourned by her dear older sister Ludmilla DJURKOVIC and husband Vlado (Melbourne, Australia,) and cousin Karin HASBARGEN and husband Freerk (Denmark, Australia). Much missed by her sons Serge Liros (Blue Hill, Maine) and friend Kathy BEAL, Alex LIROS (Toronto) and George LIROS (Easton, Pennsylvania.) Lovingly remembered by her four grand-daughters: Nicole SIMMS and husband Jonathan and their two children Dylan and Hannah (Schenectady, New York), Christina LIROS and Joe RICHARDS (Greenville, Maine), Sara VEGA- LIROS and Janice and their family (Turner's Falls, Massachusetts), and Alexandra LIROS (Greenville, Maine.) SIMMS, Raymond Edmund
The death of Raymond Edmund SIMMS occurred on February 2, 2006 at Pine Grove Nursing Home, Fredericton, New Brunswick. He was the husband of Maisie (MacRAE) SIMMS. Raymond was born on March 25, 1918 in New Liskeard, Ontario, to parents Edwin and Mary (Reynolds) SIMMS. His early days were spent in Northern Ontario. He attended Scollard Hall in North Bay, Ontario, Queen's University and Osgoode Hall Law School. He served as a lieutenant in World War 2 Canadian Army Artillery Corps. After the war, Raymond practiced law in Sudbury, Ontario and later in Toronto, Ontario. On retirement he returned to his birthplace, revisiting his boyhood haunts, and doing some travelling both at home and abroad. Later he took up residence in the Village of Gagetown, New Brunswick and more recently he moved to Fredericton. Besides his wife, Raymond is survived by his step-daughter Mary-Jo MacRAE (Ray KAINE) of the Village of Gagetown and her three children Dylan, Jordan and Dryw; also by his step-son Wayne (Jean) SIMMS of London, Ontario two granddaughters Leanne SIMMS of New York City and Caroline (Rob) DIRKSON of Winnipeg, Minnesota. Also surviving are his two brothers: Robert (Elsie) of Toronto, Ontario and Clare (Cecile) of Belleville, Ontario and two sisters Joyce DEAS of Beaverton, Ontario and Mava HOLLAND of Clinton, Ontario. There are many surviving nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Raymond was predeceased by his first wife, Helen (McWHINNIE) SIMMS; one sister Cavell and two brothers Hugh and Blake. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held at the J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, February 7th, 2006 at 3: 00 p.m. Rev. Monte Peters will officiate. Graveside service and interment will follow in the springtime in New Liskeard, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, donations may be made to D.E.C.H. Of Mar passed away as the result of a sudden heart attack at Wiarton District Hospital on Tuesday, December 5, 2006 in his 68th year. Beloved husband and best friend of Pat for 48 years. Bob was the cherished father of Steven SHIELDS and his fiancee Terri of Kitchener, Nancy SHIELDS of Marathon, Kelly SHIELDS of Cambridge, Mark SHIELDS of Breslau and Leslie SHIELDS and her husband Dave DYNEROWICZ of West Montrose who will all miss him dearly. Very special grandfather of Katy, Rob, Melanie, Olivia, Joey and James. He will be sadly missed by sister-in-law Frances SHIELDS of Waterloo. Bob was predeceased by his parents Lydia (SIMON) and Werner SHIELDS, his brother Bruce SHIELDS and sister Jean SHIELDS. Bob was a warm and gentle man who loved animals and the outdoors. He worked at Lear Seating for 32 years, was a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows Spirit Rock Branch #312 and a regular attender of the Wiarton Men's Breakfast. Peggy BENNETT (née LAW) passed away on October 21, 2006, after a short illness in her 89th year. Peggy was predeceased by her husbands, Major Dennis SIMON- SYMONS (1969) and O.B. (Tony) BENNETT. She is survived by her children, Venetia and her husband, Edward MOORHOUSE and James Ivor and his wife Trish SYMONS, and her Grandchildren Sonya, Simon, Timothy and Ian. During her last 8 years she became the Great-grand Mother of Oliver, Julia and Charlotte CONN and Abigail MOORHOUSE. Peggy was born in Toronto, but lived her early years in Europe. She returned to Ottawa in 1948 and later worked at the National Gallery of Canada. Peggy was a amazing person she always remained a beautiful and stylish woman with panache yet with no pretensions. In her last 40 years she held court in her little houses in London England, aboard the Yacht Pellee and later in centre-town Ottawa. Over her long life, she loved her animals, Sam, Tux, Tibor, Pico and her pussy cats. Like everybody else, Peggy's life had its ups and downs and she dealt with each obstacle with her philosophy of 'Oh Poof' and went on her way with dignity and decorum. Within her sphere, life was never dull!! We remember the good times and we will miss her. A memorial service in celebration of Peggy's life will be held at St. Bartholomew's Church, 125 MacKay Street, Ottawa, Ontario Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at 11: 00 a.m. A reception will follow in the church hall. 78, died peacefully at home after an exhausting battle with cancer on Thursday, March 9, 2006. He was surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary KOZIOL (née ANDRUCH,) and his six daughters Carol KOZIOL of London, Jane ARNOTT and her husband Ken of London, Natasha KOZIOL of London, Valerie KOZIOL of Barrie, Ann Marie SIMONE and her husband Ron of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Andrea KOZIOL and her husband Thomas NEUSPIEL of Toronto. "Dedo" will be missed by grandchildren Luke, Brock, Ben, Calvin, Erika, Kurtis, Kyra, Teri, Sacha and Isabella. Also survived by niece Doris. Predeceased by parents, Gregor and Natalia, by brother Fred, and by nephew John. John was born in Porichya, Belarus (Poland) in 1927 and emigrated to Canada in 1939. He taught at Beal Secondary School, retiring in 1986. He was a gifted musician and loved the solace of nature. His presence will be missed. At John's request, there will no visitation or funeral service. A private family funeral will be held. Interment Woodland Cemetery. Ethel RAICUS - artist, educator, scholar, translator, cousin, friend and mentor died Tuesday, April 11, 2006. Raised by her mother, Slaava, Ethel's passion for art began at an early age, inspired by Doris McCarthy and Arthur Lismer. One of the first women graphic artists in advertising, she later became a painter in her own right. Ethel was elected to the Ontario Society of Artists in 1963. Ethel was a woman of many passions. Her idealism for a Jewish state compelled her to live and work in Israel in the early 1950s. Ethel was a scholar who became principal of the Holy Blossom Hebrew School. Later in life, she honed her skills in Yiddish, translating stories for journals and a book collection. Ethel was an opera buff and travelled with the family to Vienna and New York to hear Adrianne Pieczonka sing. She was so looking forward to the Gala opening of the Canadian Opera Company, but it was not to be. Ethel was loved and admired by cousins Raizel and Sulie SPECTOR, Elizabeth and Neil COOPER, Bill and the late Bryna PARK, and Arnold and Dina SIMONOFF; the Kates family; and by her second cousin Mavis PIECZONKA and her family. Ethel crafted a life rich in experience and relationships she will be missed by her many Friends and colleagues. Ethel will be buried from Holy Blossom Temple, 1950 Bathurst Street, on Sunday, April 16, 2006 at 10: 30 a.m. Interment at Holy Blossom Memorial Park. They recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on February 9, 2006. Pre-deceased by her parents, Herbert John SIMONS and Eleanor Anne (WILLIAMS) and brothers Herbert, Harold, Jack and sisters Ivy, Violet, Marjorie and son John William. Survived by her sister Anne L. BURLEY of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Loving mother of Steve (Doreen), Susan and Keith (Diane). Grandmother to Tera-Lee (Peter), Troy (Margo), Allyson, Timothy, Hannah and great grandmother to Rachel. She leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins in the United Kingdom. Born in Seven Kings, Essex, England, she emigrated to Canada as a war bride in 1946 and retained intense pride in her British heritage, which included, most notably, her service in World War II in the Army Territorial Service attached to the Army Pay Corps, stationed in Aldershot, Hants and Ilfracombe, Devon from 1941 to 1946. She was active in the Anglican Church Chancel Guild and was a member of the Toronto Diocesan Chancel Guild for over 30 years. She was the White Linen Convenor until her recent illness prohibited her from sewing. She loved to play bridge and cards, whether at home or at the cottage. Peacefully, at Ballycliffe Retirement Home, Ajax, on the 14th of December, 2005. Florence May SIMONS, in her 98th year. Predeceased by her husband Ernest CALVERT and by her husband Frank SIMONS. Mrs. SIMONS was a longtime member of Pickering Village United Church, a member of the Eastern Star, and in her younger days a devoted member of the United Church Women Cremation will be followed by interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery Mausoleum. A Memorial Service to celebrate her life, followed by a United Church Women reception tea (that she requested), will be held on Friday, January 6, 2006 at 1: 00 p.m. at Pickering Village United Church, 300 Church Street North, Ajax. Passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at Thompson House, 1 Overland Drive, Don Mills, Ontario. Wife and best friend of husband Larry of 60 years. They recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on February 9, 2006. Predeceased by her parents Herbert John SIMONS and Eleanor Anne (WILLIAMS) and brothers Herbert, Harold, Jack and sisters Ivy, Violet, Marjorie and son John William. Survived by her sister Anne L. BURLEY of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Loving mother of Steve (Doreen), Susan and Keith (Diane). Grandmother to Tera-Lee (Peter), Troy (Margo), Allyson, Timothy, Hannah and great-grandmother to Rachel. She leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins in the United Kingdom. Born in Seven Kings, Essex, England, she immigrated to Canada as a war bride in 1946 and retained intense pride in her British heritage, which included, most notably, her service in World War 2 in the Army Territorial Service attached to the Army Pay Corps, stationed in Aldershot, Hants and Ilfracombe, Devon from 1941 to 1946. She was active in the Anglican Church Chancel Guild and was a member of the Toronto Diocesan Chancel Guild for over 30 years. She was the White Linen Convenor until her recent illness prohibited her from sewing. She loved to play bridge and cards, whether at home or at the cottage. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, March 16th at 2 p.m. at the Church of Our Saviour, 1 Laurentide Drive (off Silverdale, east of Don Valley Pkwy., south of York Mills Rd.), Don Mills, Ontario M3A 3C6.
