SHARP,
Florence▼
Irene▼ (née
READ)
By Andrea SHARP,
Page
A22
Wife, mother, grandmother, sister, tea-drinker. Born July 20,
1919, in Toronto. Died April 17, in Aurora, Ontario, of respiratory
failure, aged 86.
Flo was born into a family along with four sisters and two brothers.
Times were hard as her parents Sarah and Albert
READ, who had
travelled from England for a better future, initially struggled
to make a life in Canada.
Mom told us that during the Depression of the 1930s many times
they had to chop up chairs in the house to use them for firewood.
Even so, the family still gathered around the kitchen table for
their ever-present cup of tea. Those experiences and the closeness
of her family must have shaped her strong character. She was
kind and giving as well as headstrong and determined and she
maintained a great sense of humour all of her life.
In 1937, Florence ("Flit")
READ met Kenneth ("Slim")
SHARP who
lived in her neighbourhood. In 1940, they were to marry on New
Year's Day, but her bout with pneumonia delayed the wedding until
January 9. Kenneth's co-workers held a wedding shower for him
in early January but he would not tell them of the postponement,
as he felt embarrassed. Mom always laughed about having to pretend
that they were married when his co-workers had visited her in
the hospital.
Dad was a very traditional man who wanted his wife to stay at
home and Mom agreed; it was a good thing as they eventually had
six daughters to raise. As Dad was building his insurance and
real-estate business, Mom worked quietly behind the scenes taking
care of the children and the home (and answering his business
telephone) while ensuring that he arrived home to a quiet, stress-free
household.
Mom routinely put everyone else's concerns ahead of her own interests
but her most enviable character trait was her ability to see
the best in everyone. Each of the daughters would complain to
her about Dad's strict rules and, although she must have agreed
at times, she never wavered in her approach -- she always defended
him by explaining that he was doing his best and that we had
to make sacrifices.
She took the same approach when any of her children complained
to her about each other, as siblings often do. She always defended
the "target" sister, noting that we had to take the good with
the bad and look at the positive qualities of that sister. This
is why to this day all six sisters, in spite of petty disagreements,
remain close and fiercely protective of each other. This is Mom's
legacy.
During her last few years, Mom endured many illnesses but she
rarely complained. She took delight in her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren and she participated in all of the family
events.
Rhonda, her first grandchild, was born intellectually challenged
but that did not stop her and Mom from developing a special bond.
They spent hours together laughing and joking and Rhonda's daily
routine included delivering Mom's favourite thing -- her cup
of tea.
Everyone who knew Mom loved her. She never had a bad word to
say about anyone but she often had difficulty expressing her
feelings; she preferred to show them in her actions.
She would rarely say the words "I love you" but had recently
suggested to us that if we told her that we loved her, she would
simply respond with "Ditto" just as one of characters did as
his response to emotion in one of her favourite movies, Ghost.
We always knew how much Mom loved us.
Now we want to say "Ditto" back to her.
Andrea SHARP wrote this on behalf of Flo's daughters: Arlene,
Donna, Andrea, Lynne, Erica and Melanie.
