Woman in car fatally shot
Struck in the head; boyfriend wounded in leg
Gunman fired through partly opened window
By Betsy POWELL and John
DUNCANSON,
Staff
Reporters
Police are looking for a motive in a double shooting that left
a 27-year-old woman dead and her boyfriend wounded in a car outside
a west-end bar early yesterday.
After receiving a 911 call at 2: 13 a.m., officers located 32-year-old
Michael DENNETT and his girlfriend, Dianna
SANDEMAN, in a black,
two-door BMW parked in front of the Europa Café and Sports Bar
on Browns Line, just south of Horner Ave.
The couple, who had been together for 3½ years, had been inside
the bar with five or six Friends celebrating Italy's victory
over Germany in the World Cup semifinal, homicide Det. Sgt. Terry
WARK said.
Police said a man approached the passenger side of the car and
fired into the partially opened window, fatally wounding
SANDEMAN
and injuring
DENNETT, who was in the driver's seat.
It appeared she was shot in the head, while he was struck in
the leg. DENNETT is recovering in hospital. An autopsy is scheduled
for this morning.
A handgun was recovered by police on the front lawn of a home
on a nearby residential street.
The car was parked in the southbound curb lane about six metres
from the Europa's front door. A bullet hole could be seen on
the outside of the driver's door.
WARK said police had little to go on so far.
The handful of patrons in the bar and bar staff, who are not
considered suspects, have all been interviewed and were co-operative,
police said.
Investigators interviewed
DENNETT, who couldn't provide a motive.
After leaving the vehicle, he saw the gunman, whom he described
as skinny and wearing a sweatshirt and jeans, police said.
The BMW was leased to
SANDEMAN and
DENNETT, who lived together
in a condominium.
Earlier this year,
DENNETT and
SANDEMAN were charged with assault
causing bodily harm after two people were attacked with a hammer
inside a Walmer Rd. apartment on March 18.
Court records show that
DENNETT pleaded guilty and was convicted
of the reduced charge of assault in April. He was given a 10-day
jail sentence, which he served on weekends. He was also put on
probation for 18 months and was banned from owning weapons for
10 years.
SANDEMAN's assault charge was withdrawn.
WARK said he was "aware of the charge" but that there was nothing
yet to suggest the two incidents were connected.
Yesterday afternoon inside the small sports bar, the big-screen
television was tuned to a local news channel broadcasting details
of the shooting.
A woman standing behind the bar said she didn't know anything
about the incident.
The Europa is beside a Japanese and Korean food restaurant, a
video rental outlet and a massage parlour. The businesses back
onto a quiet residential area.
A witness who did not want to be identified said he saw the male
victim recline the passenger seat so that the mortally wounded
woman could lie back.
He also told her that help was on the way, the man said.

Conrad
Don and Romayne
KAUFMAN have two combined families of ten children
and we would all like to take this opportunity to express our
deepest appreciation and thanks to everyone for the care you
have shown us, through your prayers, kind thoughts, food, phone
calls, sympathy cards, beautiful flowers and generous donations
and other tokens of goodwill and remembrance. To many of you,
who took time out of your day to come to the funeral home and
express your sympathy to our big family. To Rev. Charles
SCOTT
for his kindly prayers and ministrations -- not only at Don's
funeral, but 15 years ago, when he married us. To Mark
BURNS
of Georgetown, who uplifted us all with his very enjoyable singing.
To Deanne and Carolyn from Westview Funeral Chapel who helped
us through all the preparations and paperwork with always a fresh
coffee on hand! Also to Sue, from Taste of Heaven, for a delicious
home baked reception after the service! To Silvana at Saint Peter's
Cemetery.
For support and encouragement from Doctor
FISMAN,

SANDERS and all the nursing staff at London Psychiatric Hospital,
who were gentle and kind to Don and helped him through to the
end. Many of you who had known Don, knew that he was a very special
person, who loved life, was so kind and caring and willing to
help anyone who needed it. It is comforting to know that he had
such a positive impact on so many people. We wish to show our
gratitude and appreciation for the kindness shown to all of us
at this time of sorrow. Sincerely, Romayne and our 10 children.
