The death of the popular, dedicated and fun-loving student has hit people hard in University of Western Ontario's close-knit aviation program, leaving classmates in tears, said Keith FLEMING/FLEMMING, director of Western's commercial and administrative studies program.
"It's a horrific loss," said FLEMING/FLEMMING. "It has really affected people deeply."
SALENTYN was a highly accomplished student who excelled in a rigorous program that requires students to carry a full academic load and complete flight training.
"He was very strong academically and he excelled at the flight training," FLEMING/FLEMMING said. "He had to satisfy not just the university, but also Transport Canada."
SALENTYN is remembered as a bright, pleasing, gregarious and happy individual.
"I never encountered him in the hall when he didn't have a big smile on his face," said FLEMING/FLEMMING. "He clearly was in his element entirely and was doing what he wanted to do. He loved aviation."
SALENTYN had concern for others and took an interest in students in earlier years of the aviation program, FLEMING/FLEMMING said.
"I have many accounts of his caring way and how he was always looking out for others. He was watchful and considerate of others, a real leader."
SALENTYN was out with Friends when struck early Tuesday by a vehicle that failed to stop. He died later that day in hospital.
The hit-and-run occurred at Castlegrove Boulevard and Walmer Gardens in northwest London in a popular living area for Western students.
London police located the suspected vehicle several hours later a short distance away.
Oscar MARROQUIN- PONCE, 23, of Castlegrove Boulevard, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
A memorial fund is being created in SALENTYN's memory. The money will create a bursary to support a student in the University of Western Ontario aviation program.
Donations can be arranged through the Hopper Hockey Funeral Home in Exeter, phone (519) 235-1220, or can be sent to Foundation Western, Room 11, Alumni Hall, University of Western Ontario, London, N6A 5B9.
Cheque donations should be made payable to Foundation Western and should mention SALENTYN.

SALENTYN, P. Michael
To all of Michael's dear Friends and our dear Friends and neighbours, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your outpouring of love, care and support will continue to help us and Michael's extended family get through this unbearably sorrowful and dark times in our lives as our hearts and souls ache with Michael's sudden loss. Your kindness, floral tributes, beautiful cards filled with words of strength and encouragement, visits, meals and warm embraces will help us to become strong again so that we will be able to keep Michael's passionate spirit, his love for his family and Friends, his wonderful zest for life and his radiant smile, which was always so contagious, forever alive. Thank you to Doctor Keith FLEMING/FLEMMING for your presence, compassion and gentle words which comforted us and all who attended. The warm, humorous and memorable words and passages read by Michael's family and Friends will never be forgotten. To all of the Commercial Aviation students, your striking guard of honour for Michael, at his departure, touched us all so deeply. The special evening to celebrate our Michael's full life, organized by his "flight buddies", will always be remembered with great fondness. We are also very grateful for your donations to Michael's memorial fund which we will strive to keep growing so that every year a bursary will be proudly awarded to a 4th year student of University of Western Ontario's Commercial Aviation and Management Program who shows as much commitment, dedication and passion as Michael did. As we will proudly commemorate Michael's wonderful achievements, we will also celebrate the five lives he saved with the donation of his precious organs. Please visit www.mike.salentyn.com Kindest regards from Jaap, Carrie and Bianca SALENTYN. " When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you will always want to be" ~Leonardo Da Vinci~

Hit-and-run ended party
A University of Western Ontario student walking home from an end-of-year party was struck and killed.
By Jane SIMS, Free Press Justice Reporter, Thurs., December 7, It was supposed to be a day of celebration for Michael SALENTYN. Instead, last April 11 was a day of tragedy and loss.
SALENTYN, 23, had just finished the commercial aviation management program at the University of Western Ontario. He'd accomplished his dream of becoming a pilot and was chosen to be the class valedictorian in June.
But while he was celebrating with Friends, a life of promise was cut short in a hit-and-run.
Yesterday, 23-year-old Oscar MARROQUIN- PONCE pleaded guilty to failing to stop for an accident causing death.
Assistant Crown attorney Peter ROLLINGS outlined the case for Ontario Court Justice Kathleen McGOWAN.
ROLLINGS said SALENTYN and his Friends had been at a party on Western Road, playing a drinking game and that SALENTYN consumed a lot of beer.
From samples taken later, his blood/alcohol level was measured at 172 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, more than double the legal limit for driving.
The group left the party on foot about 2 a.m. On Walmer Gardens near Castlegrove Boulevard, they were playing "kick the can" with a plastic juice bottle. One of SALENTYN's Friends kicked the bottle onto Castlegrove.
SALENTYN was the only one who didn't see the car coming and went onto the road.
MARROQUIN- PONCE was returning home from working at the downtown Martini Bar. He had been drinking.
Earlier, he had played "kick the can" outside Jack's Bar on Richmond Street and had been dancing at the Martini Bar before leaving.
Friends said MARROQUIN- PONCE was considered "a responsible drinker, often" acting as a designated driver or not driving at all if he believed he'd drank too much.
A witness said he saw MARROQUIN- PONCE at the Martini Bar about 1: 30 a.m. and he didn't appear intoxicated.
MARROQUIN- PONCE was driving his parents' car toward his house on Castlegrove when SALENTYN was struck.
witnesses: said the car braked, but didn't fully stop before it left quickly. Police found no skid marks.
SALENTYN died in hospital the next day of head trauma.
Police found the car at MARROQUIN- PONCE's home about 5 a.m. with the driver's side mirror smashed and windshield broken and caved in. There was glass on the hood and a trace of red on the bumper.
MARROQUIN- PONCE told police SALENTYN "came out of nowhere, he ran in front of me. I had no chance."
He said he slowed down but was scared and went home.
When interviewed, police said, MARROQUIN- PONCE was near tears. There was no sign of impairment. He admitted to drinking two martinis but said he stopped drinking by 11 p.m.
His sisters told police MARROQUIN- PONCE came home crying and talked on the phone to his parents, who were in British Columbia He said he hit someone and planned to go to the police the next day.
Experts pegged the car travelling at about 58 km/h before the crash.
MARROQUIN- PONCE is to be sentenced February 16.
