In memory of a dear mother, Jean, who passed away two years ago
January 28th, 2004.
What would we give her hand to clasp,
Her patient face to see,
To hear her voice, to see her smile
As in the days that used to be,
But some sweet day we'll meet again
Beyond the foil and strife,
And clasp each other's hand once more
In Heaven, that happy life.
We miss you Mom.

ROUTH,
Jack
By Helen ROUTH,
Page
A26
Husband, father, grandfather, teacher, soldier, spy, traveller,
model-ship builder. Born October 2, 1926, in London, England.
Died May 18 in London, Ontario, of an aneurysm, aged 79.
Jack ROUTH was a spy …well, this is what he would say with a
wink and a nod over a pint. What he was, was an interpreter for
the British Secret Service at the end of the war. He was quite
young, only 18, but he was multilingual so they snapped him up.
His many languages included; English, French, Italian, and smatterings
of German, Spanish, Urdu and Hindi. Yes, Urdu and Hindi, a present
from an early life as a child of the Empire where his grandfather
ran engineering projects such as the construction of more than
a dozen tunnels on the Khyber Pass.
When asked how early he developed his multilingual abilities,
Jack used to tell a story where he was separated from his nanny
somewhere in Belgium when he was about 4 or 5. He ended up in
a Belgian police station where they asked him "Ou est ta mère?"
"She's gone to Brussels to buy lingerie," he said matter-of-factly,
en français. I assume the station was full of suppressed laughter,
probably brightened their day.
Jack usually had that effect on people; he was pretty gruff when
first encountered, but he was always full of charm and informatively
funny stories. In my house, he earned the affectionate moniker
of "Grumpy Grandpa" from his three grandchildren Rowan, Arden
and Austin.
After the war he was demobbed and stayed on in Italy for about
five years, enjoying the country, the people and the wineries.
Once, after a winery visit with Friends, he ended up on the trolley
by himself with about three men he had arrested several years
previously. He remarked that at the time of the arrest, he had
been quite obvious as the only British redheaded Italian-speaker
in the arresting group. He ended this story by saying they kicked-the-something
out of him that day. But it wasn't much worse than the "discipline"
from any of his headmasters at boarding school in the 1930s.
On to Canada in 1954 where he met and married Elizabeth and had
three strapping children (Alex '58, John '59 and Helen '65),
taught business administration at Seneca College for more than
20 years, and when his first marriage ended, met and married
Caroline, with whom he enjoyed the remainder of his life.
Jack always had an easygoing manner about him that drew people.
When they were travelling, which was often, Jack and Caroline
were never lonely, although it did get harder as his hearing
began to dim with age, even though he'd never admit it.
He spent the last 10 years of his life in small-town Ontario
(Thornbury to be exact), immersing himself in the rhythms of
the life around him as he always did wherever he was.
In 1996, on the day Caroline and Jack moved in to a new house
in Thornbury to enjoy their retirement, it burned to the ground
because of faulty wiring in a wall heater. Caroline remembers
that Jack ran back into the house with a fire extinguisher to
try to get "…the bloody cat!" He re-emerged unscathed, but had
to spend the night on oxygen at the Meaford Hospital.
Jack mourned the fact that he had lost his cat and his journals,
the first journal being a commemorative to the previous set of
journals lost in the Blitz. At least Jack hadn't lost his hand-built
model ships. They were still in the back of his van when they
retired that night and were safe from the fire.
Those precious ships built with my father's hands now sit in
many houses; I can't walk by the one he gave me without smiling.
I'm lucky I had my dad for 40 years, even though I know there
are many stories that will now remain unheard.
Helen ROUTH is Jack's daughter.
