Woman injured in fire dies
Debbie ROBERTS, 50, is remembered as a caring mother and friend
and a tireless worker.
By Patrick
MALONEY, Free Press Reporter, Fri., May 26, 2006
The woman rescued by London firefighters from a townhouse blaze
has died, her family said yesterday.
Debbie ROBERTS, 50, who was rescued without vital signs from
the fire Wednesday in her Arbour Glen Crescent home, but then
resuscitated, died in hospital yesterday, her daughter said.
"She was a mother of three, she was kind to animals, she loved
her family and her Friends," Shelley
WULF, 27, said emotionally
from her Virginia home.
ROBERTS lived with her common-law husband, identified by Friends
and family as Paul
MOOD, in the townhouse at 99 Arbour Glen Cres.
Police at first said he suffered minor injuries, then listed
him in critical condition. But his condition wasn't known last
night.
Sparkles, the London cleaning service where
ROBERTS had worked
the last six or seven years, has established a bank account to
collect donations. The money is for expenses related to
ROBERTS,
not her husband, said manager Tammy
FERGUSON.
"(Our boss) just wants to be able to do something for them,"
FERGUSON said. "We just don't want
(WULF) to have to worry financially."
ROBERTS' family is facing financial struggles that may keep the
three children from travelling to London, she said.
FERGUSON recalled
ROBERTS as a tireless worker and friendly colleague.
"Every day, whether she felt good or not, she was here,"
FERGUSON
said. "She was a back-breaker, seriously. She didn't take any
time off, she couldn't afford to."
The cause of the fire was still unknown as the Ontario Fire Marshal
continued investigating yesterday.
Police offered no new details.
It was about 2 a.m. Wednesday when tenants in the townhouse complex
which has about 18 units -- awoke to the rumbling of fire
trucks. The fire gutted two townhouses, including
ROBERTS'.
A report in yesterday's Free Press indicating units 99 and 100
were gutted was incorrect, one tenant said yesterday, noting
they were 99 and 98.
Beyond some smoke damage, the fire was kept from spreading throughout
the complex, owned by London radio personality Steve
GARRISON.

Husband, father, bookseller, poet, gentleman. Born September 8,
1931, in Aberdeen, Scotland. Died November 9, 2005, in Burritt's
Rapids, Ontario, of natural causes, aged 74.
Along with his deep knowledge and love of literature, Bill possessed
a kindly charm and keen sensibility. He could read his customers
a mile away. He'd emerge from the rear of the store, tall, elegant
and bearded, and gently introduce them to just the authors they
were looking for -- even when they hadn't yet realized it.
Bill raised Ottawa's literary standards. His clientele ran from
John Diefenbaker and Lester Pearson to Pierre Trudeau and Ed
Broadbent. When the Prime Minister's Office or the Department
of Foreign Affairs needed a gift for a visiting V.I.P., they
knew whom to call. And over the years, Bill mentored a new generation
of booksellers.
Bill was a complex, multifaceted man: a very private person yet
a loyal friend and boon companion; a businessman yet an accomplished
poet. Growing up in wartime in the English industrial city of
Leeds, he was an autodidact who immersed himself in books. His
friend Gordon
BULLOCK recalls Bill as a perfect gentleman, even
as a teenager: "Dressing in tweeds, smoking a magnificent pipe,
wearing a stylish hat, all of which gave him the air of a young
academic."
Bill moved to London, where he reported for the Fish Fryers Gazette
and frequented the theatre. A friend of his, a penniless young
actor named Peter O'Toole, slept on his floor while seeking parts
in the West End.
In search of better prospects, Bill emigrated to Canada in 1954
with Gordon
BULLOCK, who would become publisher of the Hamilton
Spectator. A few years later Bill was happily working at Leishman's.
As Mr. BULLOCK puts it, "He'd travelled 3,000 miles to find his
true home." Bill bought the business in 1961 in partnership with
Peggy BLACKSTOCK, raised its stature, and moved the store uptown
near Parliament Hill.
Farsighted and imaginative, Bill
ROBERTS became a force for innovation
and professionalism in the book trade. In 1972, he opened satellite
stores in Ottawa and Victoria under the name Books Canada, selling
exclusively Canadian titles. He was elected president of the
Canadian Booksellers Association, fostered bookseller education,
and promoted publisher-bookseller co-operation in bringing electronic
commerce to the industry.
Although he was serious about business, Bill's first love was
literature. Ottawa poet William
HAWKINS recalls Bill approaching
him after a reading to share his enthusiasms for Eliot and Auden.
The two became Friends, and Bill shared his own poetry with Mr.
HAWKINS,
who was struck by its craft, wit and poignancy.
Another colleague, bookseller-turned-publisher Al
CUMMINGS, became
a close friend. He and Bill travelled widely together in search
of history, art, good cigars and fine scotch. They marked the
millennium by flying from New York to London on the Concorde,
visiting galleries and theatres, and returning on the Queen Elizabeth II.
Bill immortalized their adventures in a satirically nostalgic
verse, Like-Minded Gents.
Bill enjoyed the tranquillity of life with his wife Carole and
daughters Stephanie and Victoria in the small village of Burritt's
Rapids near Ottawa. For some years after he sold Leishman's in
1992, he and Carole ran a lovely antiquarian bookshop in nearby
Merrickville, but Bill's failing health eventually caused them
to retire. One of his last and most moving poems begins: I hope
the better part / Of who we are / May be remembered.
Writer Roy
MacSKIMMING is a colleague and friend of Bill
ROBERTS.

No motive apparent in garage double killing
Scarborough deaths and fatal shooting in West End bring city
homicide total to 38
By Timothy
APPLEBY and Scott
ROBERTS,
Page
A10
Toronto's homicide total for the year has risen to 38 after a
middle-aged woman and a 31-year-old father of three were found
slain in a blood-soaked garage on a quiet Scarborough street.
The shooting took place late Wednesday. In an unrelated gun incident
earlier the same evening on the other side of the city, a man
newly released from prison was shot in the head. He died of his
injuries yesterday.
Both of the Scarborough victims, believed to be Canadians of
Filipino origin, were shot in the head and were discovered by
the man's wife when she returned home, police said. The relationship
between the two deceased was not clear, police said.
Two assailants believed to be Filipino or southern Asian, wearing
light-coloured shirts, were being sought.
Detective Mike
BARSKY of the homicide squad discounted widely
circulating suggestions that the female victim -- identified
by other police sources as Isabelita
MALEJANA, 56, of west-end
Toronto -- was a transsexual or transvestite. "I don't know where
that came from," he said.
A former neighbour said Ms.
MALEJANA was married with children.
The family used to live on Embro Drive, near Allen Road and Sheppard
Avenue.
"It's so sad that this happened," said Emily, who spoke on the
condition that her last name not be published. "She was very
quiet. She didn't come out of the house very much. The family
kept to themselves for the most part."
Emily said the family moved away from the area about a year-and-a-half
ago, but she didn't know where they had been planning to relocate.
Speculation that the crime was a murder-suicide is false, Det.
BARSKY
said. However, no motive was immediately apparent.
The second victim was identified as Virgilio
CUEVAS, whose wife
discovered the bodies at 58 Canoe Cres., near Steeles Avenue
and Markham Road, when she opened her garage door at around 8: 40 p.m.
and called 911.
Mr. CUEVAS and Ms.
MALEJANA were pronounced dead on arrival at
Sunnybrook hospital.
Neighbours described seeing a bloody scene inside the garage
after police arrived.
"I came outside and ran across the street and saw the police
running with their guns out," said Jupiter
ENGRACIA, who lives
down the street from the house.
"There was a body in the garage with blood spattered everywhere."
When emergency crews removed the other body, it was wrapped in
a blanket, Mr.
ENGRACIA said.
Ammunition was reported to have been found in the home, but police
said there was no sign of a gun at the crime scene.
The couple's three children, all believed to be under 5, were
in the house at the time and were uninjured.
Late in the evening, police removed them from the family home.
Neighbours said they often saw Mr.
CUEVAS playing outside with
his children.
Yesterday, police tape cordoned off the front yard of the home
as a police cruiser guarded the area. A lawn mower and three
small bicycles sat in the yard.
Neighbours said they were shocked that such a gruesome slaying
could happen in this quiet, newly built subdivision.
"This is scary; it's just two houses away," said Darwin
RUBIO,
"My wife wants to move…. This makes her want to move more so."
Separately on Wednesday night, a man in his 40s and just freed
from jail for breach of probation was also taken to Sunnybrook
hospital in critical condition.
Shot and wounded in an apartment above a bar on Weston Road near
Eglinton Avenue, he succumbed to his wounds yesterday.
The man's identity was not immediately released, pending notification
of relatives, but a friend who said she knew him well gave his
name as Gerald
McDONALD.
Four unidentified youths were spotted fleeing that crime scene.
The incident was the latest in a rash of recent fatal shootings
in the Weston Road area.
The three deaths push the city's firearms-related tally close
to the same number as was recorded this time last year. In total,
52 people died as a result of gunshot wounds in 2005, an all-time
high.

Officer shot dead, 2 teens in custody
By Peter EDWARDS in Windsor Nicolaas
VAN
RIJN in Toronto with
files from Scott
ROBERTS,
Camille
ROSS and Canadian Press, Page A1
A Windsor police officer who "couldn't wait to go to work" was
shot dead yesterday afternoon while coming to the aid of a harassed
family operating a Mac's Milk convenience store in a residential
section of the border city.
Two 18-year-old male suspects are in custody and a gun has been
seized, Windsor police Insp. Greg
RENAUD told a news conference last night.
Const. John
ATKINSON, 37, the father of two young children, is
believed to be the first officer in the more than 120-year history
of the Windsor force to be killed on duty, said Windsor police
Chief Glenn
STANNARD, who noted three other officers have died
in car accidents.
As word of the 14-year police veteran's death rippled across
the border city, the shock was palpable.
"Today the entire city mourns the loss of a dedicated individual,
a committed individual who put service above self," said Windsor
Mayor Eddie
FRANCIS.
Police said the incident, at 2: 05 p.m. in a parking lot near
Seminole St. and Pillette Rd., in a residential neighbourhood
about half a dozen blocks south of the Detroit River, began when
ATKINSON approached two men.
According to local residents,
ATKINSON, who lived in the neighbourhood,
was responding to a call for help from the Middle Eastern family
who operated the milk store. They'd complained of being harassed
by "white kids," neighbours said; when they told
ATKINSON about
it he suggested they call him if it happened again.
They did, and he responded quickly to confront the two men, neighbours
said, producing his badge and identification. That's when one
of the two men allegedly pulled a gun and shot him.
STANNARD said
ATKINSON "approached these individuals and during
this time a firearm was produced and Const.
ATKINSON was shot.
Const. ATKINSON was struck by a bullet, but was able to return
fire."
"The two suspects,"
STANNARD added, "were seen fleeing the area
on foot after the shooting, leaving the officer lying on the
sidewalk. And it is possible, when the suspects were fleeing,
some items were discarded, such as clothing."
Two 18-year-old Windsor men -- uninjured -- were arrested shortly
afterwards during a massive police search, and a firearm was
recovered, but police won't say if the weapon was related to
the shooting.
Investigators also wouldn't say how many times the officer, assigned
to the provincial anti-terrorism section, was hit. But local
residents said
ATKINSON was hit at least twice, once in the throat
and chest.
Dennis ROCHON was sitting on his balcony in a nearby apartment
building when he heard three loud shots. Rushing outside, he
found ATKINSON on the pavement.
"There was no movement,"
ROCHON said. "There was blood all over
the place. It looked like he got shot in the throat and the side
of the chest. You could tell he was dead."
Another man, identified only as Terry, said he saw
ATKINSON struggling,
stumbling three or four metres before collapsing.
"He tried to get up, and he fell again," Terry said.
Lloyd MENARD, in the store at the time, thought he was hearing
things when the gunfire broke out.
"At first, a couple of people thought they were just like poppers
on the ground, but no, it was actually gunfire," he said. "My
truck's got blood all over it, so those kids must have shot him
right there."
After the two suspects were taken into custody, Special Weapons
and Tactics teams scoured the neighbourhood for a possible third
participant in the shooting, but police later said there may
only have been the two suspects.
ATKINSON, a senior constable who started with the force as a
cadet, was known as a "good cop,"
STANNARD said.
The chief,
FRANCIS, a chaplain and several of
ATKINSON's on-the-force
Friends visited the slain officer's wife, Shelley, and his children
yesterday afternoon in an effort to console the family.
ATKINSON's
daughter Nicole turned 7 this week; his son Mitchell is 9.
During the family visit,
STANNARD said, tears flowed freely.
"You do what your heart leads you with,"
STANNARD told reporters
last night when asked about the visit.
"It's a tragic thing, and I think the best I can do is say you
share tears, and you share hugs."
STANNARD said he and the Windsor police honour guard will be
in Toronto, as planned, for the annual memorial ceremony of remembrance
at the Ontario Police Memorial tomorrow at 10: 45 a.m. The memorial,
at Grosvenor St. and Queen's Park Circle E., commemorates Ontario
police officers slain on duty.
"Our honour guard and I will be attending… obviously with heavy
hearts," the chief said.
