GRANDY, James Frederick
Distinguished public servant.
Died peacefully at Ottawa, February 27th, 2006, aged 86. Deeply mourned by sons David of Brockville and John of Toronto, daughter Kathie GETZ of Ottawa, son-in-law Richard GETZ, daughter-in-law Meg SALTER, granddaughters Jodie and Carly GETZ and Jackie and Claire GRANDY, brother Thomas of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and sisters Mary Anne WATSON of Oliphant and Pat STEWARD/STEWART/STUART of Toronto. Predeceased by his loving wife of nearly sixty years, Alex (SHAW) GRANDY, and by his sister Betty BROWN. Jim was born at Fort William, Ontario, 1919, son of the late Clarence and Annie (ADAM/ADAMS) GRANDY. Educated at Alliston High School, University of Western Ontario (B.A., Economics, 1941) and at Christ Church, Oxford University (M.Phil., P.P.&E., 1948). Volunteered for Canadian Army, 1939 saw active service in Europe; was Mentioned in Despatches. Decommissioned with rank of Major, 1946. Rhodes Scholar, 1946. Joined Canadian civil service 1948 and served in the Departments of External Affairs, Finance, and the Privy Council Office. He participated in all of Canada's major trade negotiations. In 1967 he was appointed the first Deputy Minister of the new Department of Consumer and Corporate Affairs. He retired in 1975 as Deputy Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce. Subsequently he worked as a business consultant with his colleague Simon REISMAN, and was also a Director of several public companies, including Canadian Marconi Company, where he served as Chairman of the Board. He chaired several dispute resolution panels under the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, and chaired a commission to reduce inter-provincial trade barriers. He was also Chairman of the Royal Ottawa Hospital Foundation. In 1989 he was named a Commendatore nell'Ordine al Merito of the Italian Republic. His career in goverment was characterized by dedication, intelligence, and integrity. He was regarded with great respect by all those who worked with him. To his family and Friends, he was generous, considerate, and loving. He will be greatly missed. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of "Nora" SCANLON, on March 28, 2006, in her 71st year. She is survived by her mother Stella BELVIN; 2 sisters, Joan REITER and Carol BELL; nieces Lynn BARDGETT, Gillian OLSON, Alicia COTTI, Andrea BELL and nephew Mark BELL. Nora will truly be missed by numerous Friends and relatives in Bermuda, her homeland, and here in Canada. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, March 31, 2006 at 11: 00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, with Father Ken GAUTHIER officiating. After a courageous battle with breast cancer our mother passed away on Monday, April 17th, 2006 at the age of 63. She is preceded by her mother Ann GALLIMORE and step-father Othniel GALLIMORE. She leaves her children Mark PORTEOUS and Ivin PORTEOUS, grandson Christian PORTEOUS, sister Ivolyn FORBES, nephews Jasper JONES, Dean FORBES and many other family members.
