Suspected street racer dies in hospital
Was driving one of 3 Corvettes on 427
Cars seized by police in separate fatal crash

QUINTINO,

A 25-year-old Etobicoke man who spent almost a week in hospital
with serious head injuries following a suspected street race
has died.
Myron KOCUR died Sunday of injuries suffered June 13 when his
silver Corvette hit a guardrail along the northbound lanes of
Highway 427 near Rathburn Rd. at about 11 p.m., police said.
The collision occurred after three Corvettes were seen travelling
at extremely high speeds, police said.
"It is certainly an obvious possibility that these three speeding
Corvettes could have been street racing," said Ontario Provincial
Police Sgt. Cam
WOOLLEY. "The possibility is definitely a part
of the investigation."
The victim was ejected from the Corvette, which was torn to pieces.
Debris was spread across six lanes.
The drivers of the other two Corvettes were arrested. Milan
PAUNOV,
31, of Etobicoke, is charged with dangerous driving causing bodily
harm, criminal negligence causing bodily harm and failing to
remain.
Michael GODINA, 24, also of Etobicoke, is charged with dangerous
operation of a motor vehicle.
As a result of
KOCUR's death, amended charges are pending.
Police have seized the other two Corvettes,
WOOLLEY said.
Since 1999, 34 people in the Greater Toronto Area have died in
street-racing incidents, police say.
Meanwhile, York Region police said yesterday that they have seized
two vehicles involved in a collision that killed two people last
month.
Robert MANCHESTER, 46, and his wife, Lisa
MANCHESTER, 43, of
Richmond Hill, were killed May 27 in a suspected street race
at the intersection of Yonge St. and Stouffville Rd. On Thursday,
officers executed search warrants at the homes of the men charged
in the fatal crash and seized their vehicles as offence-related
property under the authority of the Criminal Code.

Peel, Durham slayings probed
Beaten Brampton man dies of injuries
In Oshawa, victim collapses near condo
By Gail SWAINSON and Amanda-Marie
QUINTINO,
Staff
Reporters
A Brampton man found beaten with a serious head injury two weeks
ago has died, becoming Peel Region's third homicide of the year.
And residents of an Oshawa neighbourhood were left asking questions
about the safety of their community yesterday after a 31-year-old
man was found dead Sunday, Durham Region's fourth homicide of
Alan MOHABIR, who was found beaten June 15 in the area of Denlow Dr. and
Verity Ct. in Brampton, remained on life support until he died
at Saint Michael's Hospital on Thursday, Peel Region police said
yesterday.
Homicide investigators are attempting to piece together the 20-year-old
victim's last hours, but a paucity of information has left police
appealing to the public for help.
"It seems like there was some sort of altercation that took place,
but we are still trying to find out what exactly happened," said
Const. Jennifer
BRYER.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Peel homicide
bureau, 905-453-3311, ext. 3205, or Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
In Oshawa, the yellow police tape that surrounded the Centre
St. S. crime scene where the region's latest homicide victim
collapsed Sunday has left local residents worrying that the area
has gone downhill.
"Eight, nine years ago, I was able to walk along the path alone
late at night, but not anymore," said long-time resident Mike
BROWN.
Durham police say emergency crews were called to a condominium
building about 9 p.m. Sunday to investigate reports that a man
had collapsed.
Sgt. Paul McCURBIN said the fatally injured man was found on
a grassy boulevard at the corner of Mill and Centre Sts.
Homicide investigators say evidence found at the scene indicates
he was killed on a paved pathway on the west side of Oshawa Creek
running north from Mill St.
The spot is just behind the low-rise condo at the corner of Centre
and Mill Sts. and within Storie Park.
"He was found with vital signs absent after receiving some type
of sharp force trauma to his body," McCurbin said.
The man was rushed to Lakeridge Health Centre in Oshawa, where
he was pronounced dead. Police are withholding his name until
next of kin can be notified. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
The area has a mix of new and older homes and low-rise buildings.
It is near the Motion Nightclub, where a 22-year-old woman was
shot while dancing last February.
The woman didn't realize she had been shot until the next day,
when an X-ray in hospital revealed a bullet lodged in her chest.

8-year-old drowns in Georgian Bay
By Amanda-Marie

An 8-year-old boy was among four people who drowned on Ontario's
waterways over the holiday long weekend.
At approximately 2 p.m. Sunday, police and ambulance attendants
from the Southern Georgian Bay detachment were called to Balm
Beach on Georgian Bay, near Midland, where they found Yathavann
SUBENTHIRALINGAM with his face down in the water.
Paramedics attempted cardio-pulmonary resuscitation at the scene
and then took him to Huronia District Hospital in Tiny Township,
but he could not be revived.
A police investigation revealed the boy had been left unattended
on the beach for a brief period of time. An autopsy showed he
drowned.
Yesterday, a 26-year-old man from St. Catharines drowned off
Crystal Beach in the town of Fort Erie after encountering difficulty
while swimming. His body was recovered about an hour after he
disappeared.
"Body surfing" down popular rapids proved fatal for a 20-year-old
Markham man on Sunday at the base of the Port Sydney Scenic Dam
just south of Huntsville. Andrew
TAILOR/TAYLOR was a weak swimmer and
was not wearing a personal flotation device, police said.
A swimmer discovered his body floating at the end of the rapids.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at Huntsville District Memorial
Hospital. An autopsy confirmed he drowned.
Another man who tried to swim across the Welland Canal near Niagara
Falls with a friend began having difficulties and disappeared
under the water, police said.
Two men accompanying the pair in a canoe pulled the man to shore,
but he was later pronounced dead. His name has not been released.

QURESHI,
Hifzul
Kabeer
By Usman AHMED,

Friend, scholar, linguist, poet, author, critic, columnist. Born
September 4, 1931, in Amarvati, India. Died October 12, 2005,
in Richmond Hill, Ontario, of heart and stroke complications,
aged 74.
Growing up in a dusty little town in India, who would have imagined
that one day his presence would be of immense importance to the
Indo-Pakistani community in Toronto. After early education he
moved to Nagpur, India for his M.A. in literature. During the
riots in 1950 his family moved to Hyderabad. Hyderabad proved
to be a fertile ground for his love of literature; he met many
scholars and poets. There he worked as a copywriter before getting
a teaching post at Nagpur University.
Afterward, he moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) as a freelance writer
where his social circle included famous Bollywood movie stars
of the day. In 1962, he left India for the U.S. After a brief
teaching stint at the University of Chicago, he immigrated to
Toronto in 1965 and worked for the Ontario government. However,
he never let go of his original passion for poetry and literature.
In 1967 he started an Urdu monthly, Sahba, and later another,
Armaghan. He established the Urdu Society of Canada. This society
organized many international events, conferences and symposiums.
His dedication to the Urdu language quickly earned him the title
of Baba-e-Urdu (father of Urdu) in Toronto literary circles.
I first met him in July, 1975. I had just started to work for
the Ministry of Housing. We met on a short elevator ride. At
the time there were very few South Asian faces in Toronto and
his warm welcome made me feel comfortable in a new city; we instantly
became Friends.
Once we were walking at lunch time when he found two five-dollar
bills on the sidewalk. He immediately gave me one saying we should
share this windfall. This sense of fairness permeated his character.
In 1960 he married Afroz, younger sister of literary figure Vajida
TABBASSUM.
Despite his literary interests and other activities he never
short-changed his family life. His younger son, Doctor Rifat
QURESHI,
tells me he remembers his father for his quiet strength and limitless
wisdom. "I was always testing my father, but when I would step
over the line - -- one look from him said it all." His first
daughter, Farah, says, "Dad had a great impact on me through
his actions rather than words. He had no time for idle gossip,
waving away such talk with a sense of irritation. He had nothing
but understanding and patience for other people's points of view
whether he agreed with them or not, he always respected them."
He was an excellent translator. Soon after arriving in Toronto
he translated a Government of Ontario booklet titled A Newcomer's
Guide to Services in Ontario into Urdu. He also translated many
literary works from Urdu and Farsi into English for the benefit
of English-speaking literature students. In 1988, he authored
An Anthology of Modern Urdu Poetry, considered an authoritative
source on the subject. More recently he was working on two books:
on cultural and religious issues facing immigrants to North America
and on the evolution of the Urdu language. He also took a keen
interest in religion, history and contemporary politics.
Kabir loved life. At parties he would entertain with recitations
of his latest poems. He enjoyed his Cuban cigars and only reluctantly
gave up smoking them during the final couple of years, based
less on his doctor's advice than on the spiralling cost of his
favourite brand.
In our 30 years of Friendship, I never heard him make a negative
comment about anyone. He was a true gentleman; he lived his life
with compassionate warmth, welcoming everyone with his heart.
Usman is a friend of Hifzul
QURESHI.
