NORREY,
Ernest
G. -- Dispatch:
By Suzanne
MA,
Page M4
For more than 50 years, Ernest G.
NORREY watched the city of
Toronto grow up from his watch out on the waters of Lake Ontario.
He was only five years old in 1917, when he and his family travelled
across the ocean to Canada from Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire,
England.
As a teen, Mr.
NORREY worked a number of jobs, including fixing
and painting the roller coasters at Sunnyside Amusement Park,
maintaining order as a bouncer at the Palais Royale ballroom,
and keeping a watchful eye, as a lifeguard, at Sunnyside Beach.
"The sun and the water were a part of his life," said his grand_son,
Brent NORREY. "It seemed to be the most important thread."
He married Phyllis
PURSLEY, who worked in the cloak room of the
Palais Royale, in 1937, and eventually he worked his way up to
become a superintendent with the Toronto Harbour Police, patrolling
Lake Ontario.
In 1949, he was one of the first on the scene when the passenger
ship Noronic caught fire in the harbour. He spent the rest of
the night hauling people out of the water. When Hurricane Hazel
hit the city in 1954, a photograph of Mr.
NORREY and his partner
rescuing a drowning man from out of the Don River was printed
on the front page of the Toronto Telegram.
"That was his job, to rescue people," his grand_son said.
Mr. NORREY died of congestive heart failure on July 5 at Oakville
Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. He was 93.
