JARVIS,
Anita
Agnes, B.Sc., M.D., M.Sc., F.R.C.P., C.C.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Doctor Anita
JARVIS on June 25, 2006. Anita was born in Szeged, Hungary. Her
father was a professional engineer and entrepreneur. In addition
to Hungarian, at age 3 she learned to speak German and English,
to which she later added French. She loved to spend the summers
swimming and rowing in the River Tisza. After the war she started
to study chemistry in Budapest, but by 1949 she knew that she
could not possibly live in a communist country pretending to
beliefs that she did not share. So, in spite of the close to
impenetrable Iron Curtain, she managed to escape to Austria from
where two years later, in 1951, she emigrated to Canada. She
finished her chemistry degree in Montreal, where she also met
her husband Gregory, to whom she was married for 55 years. Their
daughter, Ingrid, was born in Montreal, just before they moved
to Ottawa where Gregory enrolled in medicine. Anita also followed
Gregory into medicine. She graduated as an M.D., with summa cum
laude, just three weeks after the birth of her second daughter,
Arianna. They moved to Toronto following her internship where,
in the shadow of the cold war at its height, Anita embarked on
her second successful career: that of a researcher on the health
impacts of radioactive fallout. After publishing close to twenty
refereed papers, she decided to launch her third and longest
career: that of a dermatologist. She practiced dermatology for
some thirty years, much of it in partnership with her daughter
Ingrid and with her close friend Peter
HACKER.
Her final career,
running parallel with her dermatology practice, was that of grandmother
to Spencer and Colin in whom she invested all the infinite love
of which she was capable. In January 2005 she became seriously
ill. She died peacefully on June 25, 2006. She was an exceptionally
giving person who had a lifelong love affair with her husband,
adored her daughters, and loved her brother and his family. But
she also had a number of acquired daughters for whom she also
became a mother figure: Sheila
MURRAY,
Iona
JAFFE, Rozalia
PETROVICS,
and Dijana
OLIVER. To all of these, and to her close Friends,
she will be irreplaceable. A private service has taken place.
