COHEN, Edgar Horace
Died peacefully at home, on July 13, in Montreal. Ruth Goldberg COHEN, his beloved wife of 57 years, was at his bedside. He was 92 years old. Edgar COHEN was born in Montreal on October 28, 1913. He was the son of Abraham Zebulon COHEN, a coal merchant and scion of the Jewish Montreal, and Malca (VINEBERG) COHEN, an erudite and witty conversationalist. He was the brother of Arthur, Riva and Elsa. He attended Roslyn School and Westmount High School. He went to McGill University and graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in 1934. Upon the sudden death of his father in 1937, he abandoned plans to study medicine and became president of L. Cohen and Sons Ltd., founded by his grandfather, Lazarus COHEN. There he introduced innovations such as profit-sharing and rebuilt a struggling business. He sold the company in 1959 and entered real estate as a consultant, running Yarco Building Corp. and LJA Investments; he successfully represented a consortium of investors in the United States and Western Canada. His real loves, though, were travel, writing and learning. After 13 trips to Europe and extensive archival research, he wrote Mademoiselle Libertine: A Portrait of Ninon de Lanclos, the 17th century French libertine. It was published in 1970 in Canada, the United States and Britain. He also wrote poems, limericks, short stories, commentary and satire, which appeared in publications including The Canadian Forum and The Montreal Star, as well as a novel and a memoir (unpublished). From 1977 to 1980 he was president of The Canadian PEN Centre. He was a member of the Board of Governors of Jewish General Hospital, a trustee of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim, chair of his McGill class reunion, and a member of the Friends of the McGill Library, the Writers Union of Canada and World Federalists. A student of history, biography and the Bible, he was a lover of opera and the outdoors, a sailor, a skier and tennis player, a wry and funny observer, a loving husband, an attentive father and unfailing friend. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, and his sister, Elsa RUBIN; his children Lenore, Judy and Andrew, and their spouses Paul HARRIS, Michael JACOBS and Mary GOODERHAM; and his grandchildren Michelle, Kenny and Andrew HARRIS, Jesse JACOBS, and Alexander and Rachel COHEN.

PENDLETON, Marie (formerly GAULEY, CABLE, McMANUS)
Marie's brave battle with Cancer ended peacefully as she slipped away at 3: 00 p.m. on September 21st, the first day of Fall, her favorite season. There were many Maries. The first graduated from Parkdale Collegiate where she was acclaimed Toronto's Miss Cheerleader of 1948. The second became Marie GAULEY, wife to Ron and mom to Steven and Lynn. One would think that might keep an average girl busy, but our Marie was never average. In addition she took on the roles of a full time Singer/Actress/ Opera School student and quickly joined the ranks of professional performers. Tyrone Guthrie chose her for consecutive seasons at Stratford in 'The Pirates of Penzance' and 'Orpheus in the Underworld'. Then followed shows on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation television: Canada's Hit Parade, GE Showtime, most of the Norman Campbell Arts Specials. A favorite of Herman Geiger Torel, she sang many roles with the Toronto Opera Festival which later became the Canadian Opera Company. The third Marie married the renowned composer and conductor Howard CABLE. Together they journeyed to New York City where they had a major involvement in the creation of some notable Broadway Musicals, "Man of La Mancha" for one. Her fourth adventure involved Boutique Fashion in the Muskokas where she owned and operated two stores, 'The Square Pumpkin', for several years. After a brief hiatus, she returned to Toronto for number five, the renewal of her stage and music career and more fashion at 'Pink Whiskers'. Part of Marie's number five was a "duet" with an old friend and colleague from her early years. It wasn't long before she took on Don and the McManus name and headed for a look at the opera world in Europe. But the pull of Toronto was strong and home was where her heart needed to be. New doors opened in Dinner Theatre and a return to one of her favorites, classical sacred music. After all, Marie was the soprano soloist at Emmanuel - Howard Park United Church from the age of 14 for nearly forty years. By the way, she was also an accomplished pianist and a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music. Her sixth and last accomplishment centered on the business world as a valued employee to two city law firms, Rogers, Smith, Dick and Thompson and most recently a cheery, welcoming voice at Ruby and Edwards and Associates. Marie PENDLETON was a shining star with an uplifting spirit who always gave the most of herself, never expecting or needing anything in return. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her throughout her rich, vital and creative life. Three lucky husbands, a daughter, son, daughter-in-law Lee and cousins and Friends by the score can attest to that. Marie had two last wishes: to have her ashes scattered at Big Rideau Lake, her beloved summer place since childhood. It lived in her heart year round. And, that family and Friends from all corners come together to Celebrate her Life with a real swell wake!! This will take place at the Performing Arts Lodge on the Esplanade, date to be announced. Donations in Marie's Memory should be made to your Charity of choice or the Canadian Cancer Society. Thanks to all, "With Love and Music".

STEPHENSON, Donald Ross (May 13, 1928-March 26, 2006)
It is with great sadness that the family of Donald STEPHENSON announce his passing on March 26, 2006. Don slipped away quietly in his sleep at Sarnia General Hospital following a brief illness. He is now in a better place and we are sure that he is watching and patiently waiting for the 'happening', that he wanted us to have in memory of him and in celebration with him. Born in Toronto, May 13, 1928, Don lived his early years in North Toronto. Don married Betty Joan WILCE in 1952 and relocated to Richmond Hill where together with his wife and life partner they raised three boys. Don was always a loving, dedicated and supportive father. After 22 years, they relocated to Camlachie, near Sarnia, in 1975 and from there their love of boating took them in 1982 to a condominium in a marina development in Point Edward (a suburb of Sarnia) where he lived out this retirement years. Don began his working life as a professional photographer, and enjoyed his passion for this creative art long into his life. Realizing that photography might not 'pay the bills', Don soon moved into a career in marketing, advertising and ultimately, public relations, concluding his career with a 25 year tenure at Dow Chemical Canada. Don was transferred to Sarnia in 1975 to take up a position as Public Relations and Advertising Manager for Dow. During his years in Richmond Hill, together with Betty, Don was active in both federal and provincial politics serving in riding association executives, as president, campaign manager and as a fund raiser. While his political allegiances changed later in life, his work at that time was helpful in securing the election of Barney Danson, Federal Minister of National Defence and Donald Deacon, the Deputy Leader of the Provincial Liberal Party. In the years following his transfer to Sarnia he became Director of Public Relations and Communications, Director of Public Issues and a member of the Management Committee of Dow Chemical Canada, earning many national and international awards in the process. Don retired from Dow in 1988 at age 60. Left behind to mourn his loss and to remember and celebrate his life are Betty, his loving (and very patient) wife and partner of 54 years; sons (and occasional troublemakers) John (Barbara KEMENY) of Thunder Bay; Chris (Lynn FOSTER) of Richmond Hill; and Mark (Kerri-Lea DEMARSH) of Corunna, Ontario; grandchildren Laura and Andrew (John,) Bill FOSTER (Chris and Lynn) and Luke and Amber-Lea (Mark and Kerri;) Helen STEPHENSON (mother of Laura and Andrew;) his cousins, Doctor Betty STEPHENSON, Dr. Alan PENGELLY, Faye WEISS and Joan STEPHENSON, his 'in-laws' Howard and Ivy WILCE, Sandie WILCE and Howard HARVEY and his numerous nieces and nephews on the Wilce side of the family. Don was the only son of and predeceased by his father, Roscoe Cecil (1889-1962) and his mother Leta Louella (née (LAPP1890-1969.)) Don will also be fondly and humourously remembered by his large family of long time, close and loyal Friends, affectionately known as 'the gang'. Too numerous to mention here, they need only know that he is counting on them to make the 'happening' a memorable party. Don will also be remembered by his many Friends in the extended Stephenson and Legge families with whom he had connected in later years as he worked on the greatest of his many projects - The Stephenson and Legge Chronicles. As it was during his working career Don's retirement was enriched by his enjoyment of his many projects and activities - boating, gardening, travelling with Betty, making wine, woodworking, photography, and his genealogical work. Our lives are enriched by his legacy: the family history he wrote, his many wonderful photographs and the beautiful pieces of furniture he made. Most of all, we are enriched by having known him and by our memories of him. At Don's request, there will not be a funeral service and his ashes will be privately interred. A 'happening' in memory and celebration of Don's life will take place at the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club on Saturday, April 22 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Memorial donations in Don's name may be made to Blue Water Health Intensive Care Unit, 89 Norman Street, Sarnia, Ontario N7T 6S3.

Joined Canada's first 4-H club, lifelong farm girl lived to 105
By April KEMICK, Free Press Reporter, Sun., March 26, 2006
Lillian PENHALE's keen memory and remarkably long life made her a living archive for Canada's best-known rural service club.
PENHALE, oldest living member of Canada's first 4-H Club, died last weekend at 105.
"She was a really special lady," said Chris Forrest, communications manager for the Canadian 4-H Council, who interviewed PENHALE in 2003 for a promotional film about the club's early days.
"Her memories were priceless," said Forrest.
The longtime Bayfield resident was 102 when interviewed for the film. She had vivid memories of joining the first branch of the rural service club at the age of 12, in Roland, Manitoba
"I was blown away by her recollections," Forrest said.
PENHALE recalled being given eggs to hatch and raise as chickens in rural Manitoba in 1913, the year the club was started.
She never forgot the blue ribbon she won for first place when she unveiled her chicks at a rural fair.
Her memories were invaluable to the 4-H organization, Forrest said.
"To this day, when I give a presentation, I show that (film) because it's just amazing," he said. "To have something like this for our archives is priceless."
The wry senior, who left behind four generations of offspring, was lucid until the end, her son said.
After her husband, Harold, died in 1975, the mother of three lived alone until this year, Tom PENHALE said.
She drove until her eyesight failed at 93, and never waned in her commitment to St. Andrew's United Church and the Bayfield Agricultural Society, he said.
"She was always doing something," he laughed.
A skilled cook and lifelong farm girl, PENHALE prided herself on her healthy lifestyle.
"She always said she never smoked and she never drank," her son said. "She was a very strong lady."
PENHALE, whose funeral last week was "packed," was an easy-going mom with a sharp sense of humour, he said.
Even after all of her Friends, her husband and a daughter died, she stayed positive and continued to make new Friends.
She also had close bonds with her eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, he said.
They were lucky to have her around for so long, Tom said.
"Not many people have a mother for as long as we did," he said. "We couldn't wish for anything more."
