Hamilton man charged, Ottawa man dies after incident in Collingwood

Collingwood - An Ottawa man is dead and a Hamilton man faces charges after police were called to an Elm Street home Sunday morning.
Collingwood Ontario Provincial Police and emergency response officials were called to the house at 7: 30 a.m.
The victim, identified as Stephen LONG, was taken to Collingwood's General and Marine Hospital and later transferred to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, where he died at 11: 19 a.m.
Collingwood Ontario Provincial Police arrested Christopher Michael BROUGHTON, 27, a short distance from the Elm Street house. The Hamilton resident faces charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder, Const. Tim GARLAND said Monday afternoon. He is scheduled to appear in Collingwood court April 25.
It was unknown Monday whether the men knew each other or what they were doing in Collingwood.
The cause of death was not being released pending the completion of a post-mortem Monday afternoon.
It's the second serious incident in Collingwood in a week. Last weekend an unidentified Wasaga Beach man was found beaten on Hurontario Street in the early morning hours. The Ontario Provincial Police has released little information in that case and no suspects have been identified.
Elm street remained cordoned off Monday morning as the investigation continued.
"It's certainly disturbing," said Dana DOYLE, who lives two houses away from the murder scene. "It's certainly sad that it happened, but (media) are trying to link it to the beating last weekend. I think it's out of proportion for Collingwood."
DOYLE said he heard people speaking loudly in the back yard of the house early Sunday morning when he took his dog out.
"I couldn't make out anything. They weren't arguing or anything like that."
DOYLE said he was unfamiliar with the people who owned the house.
"I don't know how long they've lived there. Maybe a year or two. I think there's a grandmother, a mother and two children who are in their 20s."
There was a party at the house Saturday night, but DOYLE said he didn't hear any noise from it.
"I don't know who was at the party."
The investigation has been turned over to the Ontario Provincial Police Criminal Investigations Branch under Det. Insp. Bernie MURPHY.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ron MERCIER on April 15, 2006. He is predeceased by his wife, Jacqueline MERCIER (née MURPHY,) and is lovingly remembered by his son Marc and daughter-in-law Shelley (Toronto, Ontario), daughter Tammy and son-in-law Peter (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and daughter Tracey (Vancouver,▼ British▼ Columbia,▼) their mother Hélène STEVENS (nee COOMBS,) sister Eleanor ROSS (Fenwick,▼ Ontario▼) and brothers Larry and Shawn (Cranbrook, British Columbia), Wayne (Timmins, Ontario,▼) mother Agnes MENARD (Fenwick,▼ Ontario▼) and grandchildren Anique, Alexander, Emma and Aerin. He will be sadly missed by all his family and special friend and partner, Leslie ROBERTS. Ron was born in Montreal, Quebec on March 22, 1943 and grew up in Timmins, Ontario. He had retired from Ontario Hydro where he had been employed for 34 years. An avid hockey, baseball and football player and devoted fan (especially the Montreal Canadiens), with a great sense of kindness and humour, he loved to tell stories about his life in Timmins and his years of dedication to Ontario Hydro. Ron's greatest love was for his family with a special and unconditional love for his children and grandchildren. They will all miss dearly their Dad and Grandad! Special thanks are extended to the nurses and physicians who cared for Ron in Intensive Care Unit East and 6 South at Hamilton General Hospital. All the staff were exceptionally professional and caring to Ron and the family during his and their time of need. For that, the entire family is extremely appreciative. Marion was the beloved wife of Joseph DELESALLE who passed away in 1991, and predeceased by her brother William MURPHY in 1942. She is survived by her six children, Patrick (Patty), Marianne (Kip), Kathleen (Tom), Michael (Dale), Timothy, and Nora (Blake) her nineteen grandchildren Kam, Tim, Jennifer, Nonie, Joe, Dionne, Sasha, Fiona, Matt, Connor, Megan, Cole, Danielle, Nicole, Torrie, Bugsy, Coady, Murphy, Katie; her ten greatgrandchildren Araya, Rylie, Avarie, Patrick, Alycia, Christopher, Knox, Jaxon, Noah and Haven, and two more expected soon. Marion and her sisters Pat, Marge and Nora (known as The Murphy Girls) were devoted to each other and they sadly mourn her passing. She will be missed by her cousins Helen HANNON (Nor) and Doris WOLTER (Jim,) both of Calgary. Many other nieces and nephews mark her passing with sorrow. Marion sincerely adored her dear friend Corrie, who gave loving care and was truly the wind beneath her wings. Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Marion made her way to Vancouver and graduated from the Saint Paul's Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. She fell in love with her sweetheart Joe, and they married on February 7, 1948. They had 6 children in under 5 years, making for a chaotic but happy household. Meanwhile, they were growing a small coal business into a successful home improvement company, known as Lumberland. Marion, Mern, May, Sis, Kitty, Mrs. D, Mum, Nanny: she was a woman of many names and talents, but the one thing that remained constant was her faith. She had faith in God, her family, her company and her wide community of Friends. Marion was proud to be a member of the Catholic Church, and of the Vancouver community and was an active member of the Vancouver Golf Club and many Charitable organizations such as Canuck Place. Marion spent many winters in Palm Springs, where she loved to spend time with family and Friends, play a few rounds of golf, and shop for good sales. But Vancouver was still her beloved city - she loved nothing more than a good crossword puzzle on the deck at Camp, a bowl of fresh crab and the company of Friends to enjoy a drink and the gorgeous view. Marion was a thoughtful and generous spirit: we fondly remember her banana bread being shipped far and wide, birthday checks for each age, Superbowl and St. Patrick's Day parties, Christmas celebrations, large family reunions, and many wonderful dinners at her favourite restaurants, the Cannery and the Pear Tree. While Marion enjoyed many blessings in life, she also faced each bump in the road with her trademark Irish spirit. She taught us all how to live with grace and with strength, even in her last few days. Her passing was in peace, and she was in the arms and prayers of her beloved family. She will be sadly missed. The family would like to thank all the caregivers for their help during our difficult time. We would also like to thank Father Ian for providing all of us with spiritual comfort. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dad, Ronald Herbert PEROWNE, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Dad was born on Waverly Street to Anna HOOKS and Herbert PEROWNE. A gifted athlete from a very early age, Dad was a member of the McGill Redmen football and hockey championship teams, honoured member of the McGill sports Hall of Fame, hockey player with the Senior Royals, and recipient of The Montreal Sportsman's trophy. In 1940, Dad enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy, where, during World War 2, he served as Lieutenant on the corvette, H.M.C.S. Woodstock. In 1945, he married the love of his life, Eunice Hellyer McCONNELL, to whom he was married for 57 years, until Eunie succumbed to cancer in 2002. Dad joined Dominion Textile in 1945 after the war, where he pursued a dynamic career, spanning over 50 years, rising to the rank of President, C.E.O., and Chairman of the Board. A great competitor, Dad played golf, poker, bridge, and hearts with passion, if not always with skill! An avid tennis player, even at 80 years of age, Dad was still giving all of us a run for our money on the tennis court at the family home on Lac Marois. Dad was extremely committed to family and Friends, and took great pride in his roles as trustee of the Jean Beliveau Foundation, avid supporter of the Cedars Cancer Institute, and as an active canvasser for the Mount Royal United Church, as well as numerous charitable organizations. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Eunice, and his sister, Margaret. He is survived by his children, JoAnn (Derek GUTHRIE,) Cathy (Pat PATTERSON), Elaine (Austin METZE), Ron (Gail MURPHY), and Ian (Debbie HOWLETT,) his grandchildren Kelly, Christine, Holly, Ryan, Charlie, Fred, Lisa, Chris, Jim, Greg, and Eric, as well as seven great grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all of us. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 19, 2006, at 4.00 p.m. at Mount Royal Funeral Complex, 1297 Chemin de la Foret, Outremont. Predeceased by her loving husband and best friend Ray DAVIES. Lucile taught school in South Dakota, then in her late 20's Hollywood called; there she joined Columbia Studios where Lucile worked for many years into her retirement. Her charm and wit was greatly enjoyed by her Friends. She will be greatly missed by all her Friends and family in South Dakota, California, England and Canada. Born on the 13th of July 1934 in Ottawa. son of the late Audrey GILMOUR and Cuthbert SCOTT; survived by his brothers David, Brian and Christopher SCOTT and his sisters Nancy COLTON and Martha SCOTT, all of Ottawa, and by 15 nephews and nieces: Blair, Tony, Sheila and Sandy SCOTT (David and Alison SCOTT;) Andrew and Mark HAMLIN (Nancy COLTON) Ben, Matthew, Joshua and Katie SCOTT (Brian SCOTT and Monica SAPIANO); James, Will and Ian MURPHY (Martha SCOTT and Brian MURPHY), Aidan and Leah SCOTT (Christopher SCOTT and Sharon HILL). Ian graduated from Saint Michael's College at the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School. He practised law for 35 years with the firm of Cameron, Brewin and Scott and Gowlings. He was the member of the Provincial Legislature for the riding of St. David from 1985 to 1992 and the Attorney General of Ontario from 1985 to 1990. In 1994, Ian suffered a debilitating stroke which he confronted with courage and determination. For a period of 12 years thereafter, until his death, he thrived on the inexhaustible support of his family and his wide circle of Friends and former colleagues. He was predeceased by his partner Kim YAKABUSKI and was supported to the end by his devoted housekeeper Librandina DE SOUSA. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maureen WESSON at North Vancouver, British Columbia, on Thursday, December 21, 2006, at the age of 66. Maureen died of complications arising from the progression of her pulmonary fibrosis. Maureen is survived by Ernie, her loving husband of 48 years, her sister Adele YORKE and her brother John ARDIS. She will be remembered and deeply missed by her daughters Karen HANLON (James,) Lori MURPHY (Bill) and Lynn BRADSHAW, her son Chris WESSON (Leachelle,) and family member Ron LEA, as well as her grandchildren Greg and Tony MURPHY, Kristina and Heather BRADSHAW, Chelanna and Cherie WESSON, and Katie, Jamie, John and Joseph HANLON. Maureen was a warm and friendly lady who gave much happiness to everyone she came in contact with. She was completely devoted to her family, and was a loyal and supporting partner throughout her husband's military career and subsequent involvement with several service associations. She also enjoyed a long and productive career as a Legal Secretary. Best friend, loving wife, mother and grandmother, with a true giving and nurturing spirit, Maureen will be remembered and cherished by everyone who knew her. The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2: 00 p.m. on Thursday, December 28th at St. Stephen's parish (24th and Mountain Hwy, North Vancouver). Passed away suddenly, at her home, on Sunday, December 25, 2005 in her 50th year. Diane was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario. She graduated with a B.A. from Laurentian University in Sudbury and earned her B.Ed. degree from Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario. She taught grade school for a number of years in Northern Alberta and for the York Region Catholic District School Board. Diane was always creative in writing poetry and verse that was both whimsical and amusing. She possessed a dry but keen sense of humour. Diane's generous and faith-filled spirit enabled her to reach out to others and kept her daily outlook on life positive and rewarding. Diane is survived by her mother Marguerite (LAROCQUE) MURPHY and her brothers and sisters: Tom (wife Diane;) Anne (husband Alan GORDON;) Bob (wife Carmen) Barb (husband Hermann KRAUS) and her twin brother David. He is predeceased by his wife Jacqueline MERCIER (née MURPHY,) and is lovingly remembered by his son Marc and daughter-in-law Shelley (Toronto, Ontario), daughter Tammy and son-in-law Peter (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and daughter Tracey (Vancouver,▲ British▲ Columbia,▲) their mother Hélène STEVENS (nee COOMBS,) sister Eleanor ROSS (Fenwick,▲ Ontario▲) and brothers Larry and Shawn (Cranbrook, British Columbia), Wayne (Timmins, Ontario,▲) mother Agnes MENARD (Fenwick,▲ Ontario▲) and grandchildren Anique, Alexander, Emma and Aerin. He will be sadly missed by all his family and special friend and partner, Leslie ROBERTS. Ron was born in Montreal, Quebec on March 22, 1943 and grew up in Timmins, Ontario. He had retired from Ontario Hydro where he had been employed for 34 years. An avid hockey, baseball and football player and devoted fan (especially the Montreal Canadiens), with a great sense of kindness and humour, he loved to tell stories about his life in Timmins and his years of dedication to Ontario Hydro. Ron's greatest love was for his family with a special and unconditional love for his children and grandchildren. They will all miss dearly their Dad and Grandad! Special thanks are extended to the nurses and physicians who cared for Ron in Intensive Care Unit East and 6 South at Hamilton General Hospital. All the staff were exceptionally professional and caring to Ron and the family during his and their time of need. For that, the entire family is extremely appreciative. Family will be receiving Friends on Friday, April 21, 2006 from 6: 00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Murray E. Newbigging Funeral Home at 733 Mt. Pleasant Road, Toronto (south of Eglinton Avenue). A celebration of Ron's life will be held for family and close Friends on Saturday, April 22, 2006 in the Newbigging Funeral Chapel at 1: 00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made in the name of "Ronald Francis MERCIER" to either the Canadian Cancer Society (1-888-939-3333) or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (1-888-473-4636).

Born in London, England, Harry SKINNER of Hamilton, in his 93rd year, died peacefully at Saint_Joseph's Hospital on Tuesday, April 25, 2006. Beloved husband, of 53 years, of the late Milly SKINNER. Survived by his cherished companion Marion HOOVER and her family. Loving father of Vincent and his wife Mary FREEMAN; Lawrence Marion MacINTYRE and her husband Brian; and Andrew and his wife Elizabeth (Chuffy) CAMPIN. Dear grandfather of 13, Michelle MURPHY and husband Steve, Suzanne SKINNER and partner Ross, Christopher and Paul FREEMAN; Harry and Jessica SKINNER; Ross, Lori and Craig MacINTYRE; and Andrea, Jennifer, Erica, Benjamin, Jeffrey and Jillian SKINNER.
