ROSCHAR,
Josef
By Lisa MONTESI and Danielle
SCHRAGE,
Page
A18
Artist, husband, friend, father, grandfather. Born December 2,
1943, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Died September 4, 2005,
at Stony Lake, Ontario, of pancreatic cancer, aged 61.
Many years ago, I asked Josef to make me a pair of candlesticks
for my birthday. In a departure from his elegant ceramic vessels,
he succumbed to my request and made a very funky set. On the
underside he inscribed, "To Lisa, to remind her that Life is
joy."
Josef embodied that joy. He was a shining light and those of
us who had the good fortune to catch it sure knew what we had.
Josef ROSCHAR was a ceramic artist of international repute. He
exhibited worldwide and his work is featured in numerous collections.
He had two exhibits at the Gardiner Museum in Toronto, the city
where he made his home for more than 20 years. His work in clay
and metal was stunning; both elegant and innovative. He was fearless
when it came to trying something new, his latest creation always
a surprise.
Born in Amsterdam, Josef arrived in Toronto in the late 1970s.
There, he met his wife, fellow artist Judith
MYERS. It was the
scheming of Judith's teenage daughter Danielle and her friend's
mom, Debbie, that brought Josef and Judith together. It was on
a beautiful July afternoon at Debbie's pool when Josef announced
he was going for a swim. He threw off all his clothes and jumped
into the pool. Judith followed suit. From that moment onward
they were inseparable. Hearing that story, anyone knowing Josef
couldn't help but grin, because "free spirit" was really the
essence of his personality. He believed firmly in living your
dreams and not settling for anything less.
Shortly after that meeting, Josef returned to Amsterdam, and
Judith followed. They set up a small ceramics studio/gallery
together.
The two became that rare couple who are able to work and live
together in harmony. In the late 1980s, they returned to Toronto
and opened a gallery on Avenue Road where they worked and exhibited.
While Josef threw on the wheel, there were always visitors dropping
by to sit and talk. It wasn't just the art they were drawn to,
but the artist. Josef knew how to listen and he made you feel
so at ease. He was straightforward, without being harsh. He could
be playful, but mindful. More than one person has said that Josef
helped change their lives, and they meant it. He was interested
if you were.
In the late 1990s Judith and Joseph moved to the Kawartha Lakes
area of Ontario, on scenic Stony Lake. There, they found an amazing
community of Friends, many of whom were artists themselves.
The loyalty and respect that Josef had earned from the many Friends
he cherished became ever so clear when he became ill. In August,
an art auction was organized in his honour. His brother-in-law,
Simon, the driving force of this event, set out to create a tribute
and a means to support Josef. Donations of work were made by
more than 40 artists. And on a glorious August afternoon, 400
people gathered to create a most memorable event. It spoke to
the way Josef had touched people.
When the doctors urged him check into the hospital, Josef made
it very clear that if he was going to die, it would be on his
terms -- he would remain in his home overlooking the lake, surrounded
by incredible beauty.
He spent his summer soaking up the glorious rays and driving
his boat.
Known to zoom along the lake, he didn't allow his illness to
stop him. However, when it prevented him from moving at his usual
speed, he discovered that "although he had always loved to go
fast, everything looked even more beautiful when he went slow."
As the summer came to a close, Josef passed away at his home.
Lisa and Danielle are Josef's stepdaughters.

Migrant worker killed at farm
Tuesday, May 23, 2006
Saugeen Shores - A 39-year-old migrant worker was killed Saturday
in a freak accident in Saugeen Shores.
Samuel GIL, a worker from Mexico on Hi-Berry Farms, which is
located between Southampton and Port Elgin on Highway 21, was
loading asparagus onto the back of a truck when the truck accidentally
backed over him.
GIL, a husband and father of six, had returned to Hi-Berry Farms
each year for the past five years to take part in planting and
harvesting on the fresh-produce farm. [Death notice named him
as GIL-
MONTESINOS,

"We lost not just a worker," said the company's co-owner, Luke
CHARBONNEAU, "he was also a friend."
CHARBONNEAU said they are trying to make arrangements to bring
his wife to the area, so she can escort her husband's body back
to Mexico.
"It's a tragic time for all of us," he said.
Driver and co-worker Abel
RODRIGUEZ, also from Mexico, gave a
statement to the police Sunday and it is not expected that any
charges will be laid.
CHARBONNEAU said an autopsy is being performed today and funeral
director Kent
MILROY in Port Elgin is making the necessary arrangements
to have GIL's body flown back to Mexico.
A news release from Saugeen Shores Police Service said
GIL was
taken by ambulance to the Grey Bruce Health Services Southampton
site, where he was treated but succumbed to his injuries.
The Saugeen Shores Traffic Unit, along with the Ontario Provincial
Police Technical Traffic Unit, were called in to assist, the
release said. Saugeen Shores police Sgt. Ron
CUILLERIER said
the accident is still under investigation.
