Financial innovator dies
By Ryan CUREATZ,
Special To
The
Free Press, Wed., January 11,
A former Londoner who went from the front counter to the head
of the boardroom table and helped change the Canadian financial
services industry has died.
Arthur H. MINGAY, who died Monday, played a key role in introducing
the first Johnny Cash bank machines in the early 1980s as head
of Canada Trust, longtime colleague Jack
SPEAKE said.
"He was involved in many of the innovations (in financial services)
we take for granted today,"
SPEAKE said.
MINGAY, who spent his career at Canada Trust, eventually becoming
its chairperson and chief executive, helped create the "product
manager" concept within the financial services industry,
SPEAKE
said.
"We were progressive and Arthur was part of that spirit."
MINGAY played a significant role in developing the company's
pension and retirement products business nationally during the
1950s, SPEAKE said.
"He was really Mr. Pension for Canada during that period."
MINGAY also introduced the "pooled funds" concept to the Canadian
market before banks, governments and insurance companies,
SPEAKE
said.
"He was a highly respected person."
During corporate acquisitions, including a major buy of Waterloo
Trust in 1968,
MINGAY played a key leadership role,
SPEAKE said.
"He was an outstanding salesperson."
MINGAY began his career as a bank teller in Windsor, eventually
becoming a branch manager in Chatham after serving in the air
force during the Second World War,
SPEAKE said.
He was a regional general manager in Toronto before reaching
the top of the corporate ladder when he was appointed president
in 1973.
MINGAY succeeded J. Allyn
TAILOR/TAYLOR as chairperson of Canada Trust
in 1978 and spent seven years in the post.
When MINGAY retired, Canada Trust created a post at the Richard
Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario
called the J. Allyn Taylor and Arthur H. Mingay Chair in Management.
Canada Trust was acquired in 1999 by Toronto-Dominion Bank in
an $8-billion deal.

CARMICHAEL
(Carol) and
Dolly RUSTON and a large extended family. Arthur was a well-respected
and charismatic businessman and philanthropist, but even more
importantly, he touched everyone he met with his genuine interest
in people. He was a true gentleman, in every sense of the word,
and his kindness and generosity knew no bounds. Arthur spent
his entire working career at the Canada Trust, except for the
four years in which he served overseas during the Second World
War. He started at the bottom and finished at the top. Upon his
retirement, the Canada Trust established a chair at the School
of Business Administration at the University of Western Ontario,
named: The J. Allyn Taylor and Arthur H. Mingay Chair in Business
Administration. In the 27 years that these gentlemen held the
positions of president or chairman, the Canada Trust grew one
hundredfold and achieved recognition as one of Canada's premier
financial institutions. At different times during his business
career, Arthur sat on the boards of directors of Algoma Steel,
Inglis, Loblaws, Mutualife, Royal Insurance and Sears. His charitable
contributions are too numerous to list, but include fundraising
endeavours and board participation with the Heart and Stroke
Foundation, The United Way, Thompson Hall and Sunnybrook Hospital.
Arthur also found time for extensive community involvement through
the church, the Kiwanis Club and Rosedale Golf Club, where he
served as President. The family will receive Friends at the Humphrey
