On Thursday, February 9th, 2006 in his 84th year, peacefully left this life to join Stanislawa, the love of his life for 51 years, after a long struggle with Alzheimers. Henry will live forever in the hearts of his loving family: daughters Chris GOLIMOWSKI (and her husband Ted MICEK,) Diane KRAWCZYK (and her husband Steve), and his grandchildren Michael, Matthew and Lydia. Henry was born in Poznan, Poland and came to Toronto after the war to start a new life, find opportunities and raise a family. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Of Saint Thomas passed away peacefully at the Saint Thomas-Elgin General Hospital on Wednesday, November 22, 2006, in her 93rd year. Wife of the late Pasquale SBARRA (1974.) Loving mother of Nicholas SBARRA, husband of Brigitta, and Eviliana, wife of Frank MICELLI, all of Saint Thomas. Dear grandmother of Carol, wife of Ken GREIN of Brantford, Gary SBARRA, husband of Annette, and Renato MICELLI, of Saint Thomas. She will be sadly missed by her five great-grandchildren, Melissa, Justin and Tyler of Brantford, and Adam and Zachary of Saint Thomas. Sister of the late Innocenzo RUMMOLO. Also survived by a large number of relatives in her native Italy. Teresa will be remembered with kindness by the many Friends she made over the years. Born in Italy, July 7, 1914, the daughter of the late Rosario and Filomena DI BELLO) RUMMOLO. She immigrated to Canada with her husband and two children in June of 1951 and lived in Saint Thomas from September of the same year to the date of her passing. Teresa was employed in the Housekeeping Dept. (Nurses Residence) of the Saint Thomas-Elgin General Hospital until her retirement in 1979. She was a member of Holy Angels' Roman Catholic Church. Medical pioneer dead at 61
Noella LECLAIR received artificial heart
Defied the odds, lived for 20 years

When Noella LECLAIR made history on May 1, 1986, as the recipient of Canada's first artificial heart, doctors gave her at most five years to live.
She proved them wrong. To the delight of her family and Friends, LECLAIR went on to live a normal, healthy and happy life for 20 years.
The resident of the Ottawa suburb of Orleans, who died Saturday at the age of 61, even opened up her own small store in the Byward market, which she ran for more than 15 years.
"She always looked at (her life) as if she had been given a second chance, which a lot of people don't get," her daughter Sophie LECLAIR- MICETICH recalled yesterday.
LECLAIR was 41 when she received a Jarvik-7 artificial heart at the Ottawa Heart Institute. A week later, she received a human heart from a 44-year-old Montreal man who had died after a traffic accident.
LECLAIR died in the same Ottawa institute.
According to her daughter, LECLAIR's heart was not functioning well in recent months, but doctors advised against another transplant.
"She took it gracefully," said LECLAIR- MICETICH. " She was happy and ready to go. She looked at the 20 years she had with us as a bonus."
Dr. Ross DAVIES, a cardiologist at the Ottawa institute who had had LECLAIR as a patient from the beginning, described her as a lovely lady, beloved by all the patients and staff.
"I don't think we would have dreamt that people would have lived more than 20 years with such good quality of life," said DAVIES.
"It has just been a remarkable story all along, very satisfying for the patient and family and very satisfying for the heart institute and the medical staff."
Born in the small community of Plantagenet, northwest of Ottawa, LECLAIR was destined to live a quiet life in Orleans with her husband, Simon, who ran a furniture business.
Before her illness, she raised nine foster children, in addition to her own daughter.
But on April 25, 1986, she suffered a heart attack that left her on life support and technically dead.
A few days' later, family members gave doctors permission to insert the Jarvik-7 artificial heart, and after a 3½ hour transplant operation led by Doctor Wilbert KEON, Canadian medical history was made.
"Heart transplantation was still somewhat young, so doing a transplant was still pretty exciting," recalled DAVIES. "It was very exciting to be involved in the first mechanical circulatory-assist device in Canada."
Back then, only the Ottawa institute performed such complex surgery, something that is now routinely performed in select hospitals across Canada.
LECLAIR's gratitude was such that she went on to become the Ottawa Heart Institute's most enthusiastic volunteer: She organized bingo games, took part in telethons and assisted doctors to help calm patients who were nervous about impending surgery by discussing her own experiences.
"At one point her doctor told me that she was (the institute's) best spokesperson, obviously because she was living proof of their capabilities," said LECLAIR- MICETICH.
DAVIES said the relationship between patient and the hospital was long and fruitful.
"Our objective when we went into this was to improve her quality of life," he said. "It turns out we couldn't have done it to a more wonderful person because not only did we help her… she returned the favour many fold both to the heart institute and the community."
Funeral services are scheduled for Monday at Saint_Joseph Church in Orleans. LECLAIR is survived by her husband, Simon, and daughter Sophie.

Canada's Number One Singing Cowboy, Earl worked at CKNX Radio and Television starting in the 1940's. He composed over 350 songs including his signature song Moonlight on the Manitoulin Island. He recorded on the RCA label. Earl was a past Executive Director of the Stratford Musician Association a regular performer on the CKNX Barn Dance and later toured and recorded with the "Heywood Family". One of his many accomplishments was the formation of the Barn Dance Historical Society. Died on Saturday, January 28, 2006, in Simcoe, Ontario, after a lengthy illness. He was predeceased by his wife Gladys, his parents Harry and Annie POPOWITCH, his sisters Anne THIBODEAU and Mary MASSICOTTE, and his brother Peter. Bill is lovingly remembered by his daughter Dianne MICHALS (Barry;) stepdaughter Penelope PAW (Ralph;) grand_sons Steven (Lisa,) Brian (Ally) great grand_son Brett; brother John (Shirley); sister-in-law Edie nieces Janet and Catherine; nephew Gary. He will be sadly missed by his caring friend Dee PENNELL and many others. Bill was a World War 2 veteran, an amputee who served and was wounded in Europe. He was a retiree of Canadian Arsenals, and a long-time resident of Etobicoke-Lakeshore. He enjoyed golf until his recent illnesses but remained an avid hockey fan. The Family wishes to thank the medical staff at Norfolk-Haldimand Hospital for their care and kindness. At his request there will be no funeral service for Bill and he will be cremated.

Lovingly remembered by grandchildren, Lauren (Bill) PHINNEY, Robin MICHELL, Patti (Art) JOHNSTONE, Brad (Sherri) MICHELL, Greg (Theresa) MICHELL, Ted (Kate) O'CONNOR, and great-grandchildren Heather, Michael, Mathew, Aaron, Kyle, Stephen, Sondra, Brooke, Tobias and Adrianna; and great-great-grandchild, Paiten. She will also be missed by many loving nieces and nephews. Hilda was predeceased by her parents Charles and Lilla MacKEY, her brothers Howard MacKEY and Everett MacKEY, and by her sisters Greta White, Verna Griffen, Laura Richardson and Elinor Fulton. The family will receive Friends at Oshawa Funeral Service "Thornton Chapel", 847 King St. West, Oshawa, Ontario (905-721-1234) on Friday, March 10th from 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the Columbus Community United Church, 3285 Simcoe St. N., Oshawa on Saturday, March 11th at 2: 00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Helen MICHELL died peacefully at the Manitoulin Centennial Manor in Little Current on November 26, 2005. A Memorial Service will be held in Toronto at Leaside United Church, 822 Millwood Rd. at 11 a.m. on Saturday May 6, 2006 with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Leaside United Church.
