CLARK,
Mavis
Audrey (née
BAIN)
Passed away peacefully at Marion Hopsice Vancouver, British Columbia
on Sunday, March 19, 2006. She was surrounded by those she loved
dearly. She is survived by her brother Doctor Stanley
BAIN from
Ontario and her children John, Bruce, Jennifer and Christy. She
is predeceased by their father, Jim
CLARK.
All of her grandchildren,
Huxley and Eliot
BENTZ, Hamish
MARISSEN-
CLARK and James
CLARK
will miss her generous, whimsical presence. She will also be
sorely missed by her dearest friend Gerry
CARTER, whose life
she enlarged and enriched. Mavis was born on February 8, 1931
in Glasgow, Scotland where her dear parents Doctor Theodore and
Audrey BAIN made their home for five years. Later she travelled
Canada with her family, living in many communities including
William Head, then a quarantine station, Rockcliffe Park, Ottawa
and Vancouver. She graduated in Sciences from University of British
Columbia in 1953 with a degree in home economics. This led to
a short career as a dietician at the Royal Columbian Hospital
in the early years of her marriage. Mavis made many life long
Friends at University of British Columbia as a sorority girl
in Alpha Gamma Delta. Mavis and Jim married in 1955. They raised
their children in Burnaby where she made a significant contribution
as a volunteer. She founded the first non-profit daycare in the
city at Saint_John the Divine church. Mavis was justifiably proud
of her role as co-founder of the Burnaby Family Life Institute,
an organization dedicated to strengthening families - a cause
to which she remained devoted. Mavis earned a graduate degree
in human behaviour from Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington
in 1980. She then established herself in practice as a marriage
and family therapist in Vancouver. At the end of her career,
she was honoured by the American Association of Marriage and
Family Therapists (British Columbia) for her role in helping
to establish the profession in British Columbia. Mavis loved
people. She loved listening and she loved talking. She was eloquent
and true in her words and emotions. She was curious, intelligent
and brimming with feeling. She was a free spirit. She painted,
created and wrote. She pursued art studies for many years while
she raised her four children. And she painted at her studio on
Galiano every year until this one. Mavis and Jim bought their
property on Galiano Island in 1969. After her children had grown,
that property on the island's magnificent south end, became her
home for many months of every year. Mavis developed a deep love
of Galiano's natural beauty. She spent thousands of hours wandering
its woods, swimming in its ocean and reflecting on nature's gift
to us. She expressed her passion for the place through her work
as a director of the Galiano Conservancy Association. Mavis fiercely
defended the island from threats including development, pollution
and non-native species. She will be lovingly remembered by many,
many Friends on Galiano for her contributions as a member of
that close knit community. A service to remember Mavis will be
held at Christ Church Anglican Cathedral (690 Burrard St. Vancouver)
on Friday, March 24 at 3 p.m. Another celebration of her life
will be held on Galiano Island at a later date. Mavis would have
been grateful if, instead of flowers, her Friends made a donation
in her name to the Galiano Conservancy Association.

MARKO o@ca.on.york_county.toronto.globe_and_mail 2006-12-13 published
MARKO,
Peter
By Natasha
MARKO,
Page
A28
Husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, car salesman,
extrovert. Born June 3, 1927, in Zhelevo, Greece. Died July 23
in Toronto of kidney failure, aged 79.
Peter MARKO would often tell the story of his trip to Canada.
He'd describe how he looked and felt when he was a passenger
on the ship that brought him to this country -- an angry Macedonian
peasant boy of 9, with his head shaved to prevent lice and his
feet covered with pigskin slippers. When another boy on the ship
(a first-class passenger) laughed at his appearance, Peter beat
the boy up. The boy was scolded by his own father for his behaviour
and Peter felt vindicated. On the seventh morning of his ocean
voyage, Peter looked out his window in third class and shouted
for his mother: "Mika, Mika!" It was the Statue of Liberty. A train
then took the pair to Toronto's Union Station.
Peter and his mother left their one-room house in Greece, the
only place he had ever known, to join his father in Canada in
1936. The house was in Zhelevo, a small mountain village in northern
Greece. Peter's father left for Canada four months before Peter's
birth, and Peter was raised by his mother and grandfather. When
Peter first met his father in Canada, he was angry and refused
to speak to him in Macedonian, speaking only Greek. Peter was
a fighter and a survivor, and he adapted to life in Toronto's
west end well.
As a 10-year-old, he was to start school in kindergarten because
he did not speak English. He brought an English-speaking cousin
to the school to tell officials he would not attend kindergarten
and was placed in a higher grade. He learned quickly to make
Friends with the right people at school to avoid being bullied.
Peter married Sophie
STOYO when he was 19. Peter and Sophie were
to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on July 28, 2006.
They had two children: Tom and Sharon. Peter's survivor instincts
served him well when, at 20 years of age, he lost his father.
He became a father figure to his three young siblings, Helen,
William, and Rose. Throughout his life, Peter acted as a father
to many family members, opening up his home when they needed
shelter or a shoulder to lean on. Peter was also the life of
any party. He was at ease with people from all walks of life.
He became a regular fixture on Toronto's St. Clair Avenue West.
When his father died, he took over the family business, Marko's
Restaurant on St. Clair. His bold personality served him well
when he later became a salesman at West York Chev Olds. Peter
liked to be busy and continued to work until his death. He delivered
his last car to a client the day before he died. He was also
an avid golfer and a long-time member of Islington Golf Club
in Etobicoke. He had a weakness for gambling and would often
play cards with Friends at the golf club or place bets on horses
at Woodbine Racetrack. He owned several thoroughbred horses over
the years.
Peter was adored by his five grandchildren because he had a particular
zest for life. He enjoyed taking them out for dinner, and e-mailing
them short notes or passing on funny or touching messages he
received from his many Friends. He enthusiastically attended
piano recitals, swim meets, and spelling bees. He was proud to
become a great-grandfather in 2005, and often remarked in the
months before his death that things would be okay because his
great-grand_son was replacing him.
At family dinners he would tell stories of his childhood, break
into song, or get up and dance. He loved to brag about his strength
and good looks. Peter always commanded attention and he usually
received it. He was an easy person to love, and he is missed
deeply by those who loved him.
Natasha MARKO is Peter's granddaughter.

MARKOULIS,
Stavros
By Jerry AMERNIC,
Page
A22
Father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great grandfather.
Born September 4, 1912, in Armensko, (now) Greece. Died September 26,
2005 in Toronto, aged 93.
At dinner recently my wife told some Friends about her grandfather
passing away. "He just got tired of life," she said.
Stavros MARKOULIS was the patriarch of the family, but the word
seems too weighty for this soft-spoken, unassuming man whom almost
everyone called "Dedo" (grandfather in Macedonian). He was not
a decision-maker or settler of disputes, preferring to leave
such things to others. Making waves was not his style.
He was the first of his family to leave the little Macedonian
village of Armensko and come to Canada, arriving in 1951 with
his two sons.
He soon sent for his wife Magda and their daughters. Along with
younger son Lazo and son-in-law Lazaros, he ran a diner in Toronto,
at the corner of Queen Street and Broadview Avenue. It was called
United Lunch and was a popular mainstay in the neighbourhood
for more than 25 years. Stavros, called Chris by his Friends
and Dedo by everyone else, was the chef.
He liked good food, ribald jokes and a long solitary drag on
his cigarette. A simple man who never lost sight of where he
came from, he always wore his Macedonian imprint with pride.
The only thing more important was his family.
He married his sweetheart Magda when he was 19 and she was 16.
Their children came at regular intervals: daughter Evangeline,
followed by sons Ilo and Lazo, then three more daughters, Fania,
Mara and Tula. The flock this group produced would make Dedo
a very proud Dedo indeed -- the family picnic held at the end
of every summer to mark his birthday was often greeted with a
new arrival.
When the bountiful lunch was over, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren
would gather for a photograph with the man of the hour. It was
always his proudest moment.
In 1976, when his beloved Magda was suddenly taken from him,
he embarked on the final third of his life, cared for by Evangeline
and forming wonderful Friendships with his many grandchildren.
He was a true raconteur who liked relating tales of the old country,
like the time when he was a young boy and French soldiers offered
him "bonbons" after they ventured into the village during the
First World War.
When he told this story, and he told it a thousand times, he
would add a little song that he had learned from those soldiers.
He'd sing it with joy and a smile and when it was over he'd exclaim
"French!" as though he had just made a major discovery. Word
has it that he sang it a mere week before he died.
A few years ago he was videotaped singing the song, but with
an added feature - he had a patch over one eye and finished with
his own special version of "Hasta la vista, baby." Everyone in
the family wanted a copy of the tape.
Dedo was a thoughtful, easygoing man with never a cross word
for anyone. He walked with a smooth gait that was unique to him
- -- hands crossed behind his back, a slight stoop to his back,
the signature cap on his head.
He was blessed with good health almost to the end; he was around
so long it seems strange with him not here.
He was much loved by his six children (one of whom, son Ilo,
predeceased him), and by 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren
and one great-great grandchild, not to mention all those who
married into the family and thought of him as their Dedo too.
Jerry is married to Stavros's first granddaughter, Dorothy.
