MANKIEWICZ o@ca.on.york_county.toronto.globe_and_mail 2006-10-21 published
MANKIEWICZ,
Edith
Marion, M.Sc., D.Sc., M.D., C.S.P.
Peacefully and with dignity on Thursday, September 21st, 2006,
in Montreal, Canada, in her 97th year. Doctor
MANKIEWICZ was born
in Leipzig, Germany. A fearless pioneer in microbiology, her
area of specialization was in the exploration of pulmonary disease.
She twice contracted tuberculosis yet each time returned to do
further research in its diagnosis and treatment. Her work resulted
in crucial contributions to the global eradication of the disease.
In 1933, she married Harald (Rene)
MANKIEWICZ, a young judge
in Germany at the time. When he sentenced supporters of the Nazi
regime to jail, the couple's life was placed in grave danger
and they were forced into exile. They received a warm welcome
in France where both repeated their studies and graduated with
honours. Both were mobilized during the war. Doctor
MANKIEWICZ was
appointed director of a hospital for children who had been evacuated
to the French countryside. During the German occupation, they
were blacklisted and forced to move again -- this time to the
French quarter of Shanghai, where Doctor
MANKIEWICZ became a Professor
of Medicine at the Université Aurore, and Interim Director of
the Pasteur Institute. Doctor
MANKIEWICZ also established a private
medical laboratory to provide work opportunities to Jewish physicians
who otherwise could not leave their enclave in the outskirts
of Shanghai. For her work during the war, she was awarded the
Croix de Lorraine by the representative of General Charles de
Gaulle. At the end of the war, Doctor
MANKIEWICZ emigrated to Canada
with her husband and two young children. At the age of 36, she
was forced to start life anew -- re-doing her medical studies
to become certified as a doctor in Canada, and then rising to
become the Director of Laboratories at the Montreal Chest Hospital.
Later, she became Director of the Microbiology Laboratory at
the Lakeshore General Hospital, where she worked until she was
over 80. She also lectured at both McGill University and Université
de Montreal and was co-founder of the Association for the Study
of Pulmonary Cancer. As a wise and loving mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother and aunt, she shared her zest for life. In
a letter to her own parents in the midst of war, she had written:
'Rather than dwell on my hatred for Hitler, I want to focus all
my energies on finding that which is beautiful in this world
and good in mankind.' Doctor
MANKIEWICZ was the mother of film director,
Francis MANKIEWICZ.
She is survived by her daughter, Jacqueline,
and her grandchildren, Christal, Dawn, Vivian, Martin and Gabrielle.
A private family service of joy and thanksgiving for her life
was held in Montreal on October 7. In lieu of flowers, donations
in Doctor MANKIEWICZ's memory to Doctors Without Borders or to the
Salvation Army would be greatly appreciated. Messages of condolence
to the family may be sent to the.circle@sympatico.ca

devoted, cherished father of Debra and son-in-law Lee
(MALES,)
Kent and friend Tammie, and Leah and son-in-law Peter; grandchildren
Graham, Erica, Ashley, Jordan and Shawn. Predeceased by daughter

Ken, Bud, and sister Lenore. Survived by sister Olive and Steven
MANLEY, sisters-in-law Hazel
PETRIE and Jean
PETRIE and a large
extended family. To know Jack was to immediately like him. He
always greeted you with a smile, a mischievous twinkle in his
eye and a little chuckle as if to say "I've been waiting for
you to arrive, now let's enjoy ourselves". A lifelong resident
of the London area, Jack worked at Kellogg's up to his retirement
in 1979. Apart from work, his private life revolved around his
family and many interests. In his younger years he would have
been called a sportsman. He excelled at everything he did. All
at one time, he was a scratch golfer, a city-wide champion bowler,
horseshoe player, marksman, billiard player and raised gamecocks
for sport. He loved to tinker and was an accomplished musician,
mastering many instruments including the fiddle, guitar, harmonica,
piano and mandolin, playing daily right up to the time of his
passing. Jack had a passion for old-time country music and one
of his hobbies was to play the fiddle at impromptu gatherings
and jambories around the area, and continued to do so into his
mid-eighties. He never had a bad word to say about anyone and
he loved to entertain people. Apart from his music, he would
keep us laughing for hours with stories of his youth, events
and mishaps along the way. Jack enjoyed life, lived well and
never lost his youthful zeal. As a result of his many interests
and considerable charisma, Jack accumulated a long list of lifelong
Friends, and will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. To
Dr. Hugh ROONEY, thank you for your diligent care. To our mother
Phyllis who, out of love, so dutifully tended to his every want

endure. Friends may pay their last respects at the A. Millard
