Former Wiarton mayor remembered
Barney McKILLOP would call from his winter home in Florida to
talk about local news
By Scott DUNN,
Page A3
Just remembering Barney
McKILLOP made Ruthann
CARSON smile.
McKILLOP's funeral took place Thursday but
CARSON said talking
about him made her feel better. He enjoyed life, he was upbeat
and ready to tell a joke or set someone up for a prank.
McKILLOP, 80, died unexpectedly early Monday morning of an aneurysm.
CARSON worked with him while he was mayor and she was the deputy
chief administrative officer and later chief administrative officer
of the town.
McKILLOP was passionately interested in Wiarton, while on council
and after. He was elected first as a town councillor in 1985.
During that term Wiarton was under provincial supervision for
deep financial problems.
While on council,
McKILLOP could be feisty, said Wiarton Echo
publisher and editor Keith
GILBERT.
But he was also easy to get
along with.
Even when he was upset about something, he usually laughed about
it, GILBERT said.
"You either like him or hate him. He's very set in his ways,"
said Margaret
McKILLOP,
McKILLOP's wife for the past 13 years.
She described her husband as "fun-loving" and a "gambler" who
owned race horses in New Jersey in partnership with others. He
knew his way around a racing form as well as the card table when
playing bridge.
McKILLOP was elected mayor in 1988 amid a house-cleaning by voters
who favoured "new thinking" and
McKILLOP's preference for more
openness, CARSON said.
He served two terms before retiring in 1994, after which he and
his wife took a trip around the world and started wintering in
Florida.
Their world tour was taken partly by container ship. They also
took trips to Indonesia, China a couple of times, Vietnam and
Turkey. McKILLOP liked meeting different people and experiencing
different cultures, said Margaret
McKILLOP.
Though out of politics,
McKILLOP remained interested in Wiarton
affairs. He would call
CARSON and others from his winter home
in Florida to talk about news he'd read in the Wiarton Echo.
"It was always interesting to hear his point of view,"
CARSON
said.
GILBERT said he would get several calls from
McKILLOP every winter
about news in the Echo, which he read in Florida. The last call
was about the number of people who were running for mayor in
South Bruce Peninsula.
"I liked him personally as a friend and as a mayor I think he
did very well,"
GILBERT said.
McKILLOP was born in Toronto. He married, had one son and retired
as an inspector for the Toronto Transit Commission.
He used to come up to Wiarton to fish and loved the area so he
retired here, Margaret
McKILLOP said. By then, his son, Brian
McKILLOP, had already moved to Markdale.
Bernard (Barney)
McKILLOP is survived by wife
Margaret, his son
Brian and his wife Sandra of Markdale and his grandchildren Janine
(Mike) LOVE of Chesley and Jessica of London.
He leaves his step-children Carole (Mike)
CLEARY of Allenford,
Jim (Linda)
WYONCH of Colpoy's Bay, Nancy
WYONCH

of Port Elgin, Debbie (Steven)
SCOTT of Port Elgin, Janet

of Milton and by seven step-grandchildren and one step-great
grandchild. He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife,
