Sault Ste. Marie mourns loss of first officer killed on the job
By Canadian Press, Mon., May 15, 2006
Sault Ste. Marie -- Police in Sault Ste. Marie are mourning the
loss of the first-ever city officer to die on the job.
Senior
Const.
Donald
DOUCET was a passenger in a police cruiser
that collided with a minivan about 2: 45 a.m. yesterday in the
city's east end.
Platoon chief Terry
DUBOIS said firefighters had to use the jaws
of life to free both officers and the driver of the minivan from
their vehicles, but the 41-year-old
DOUCET died a short time
later in hospital.
The second officer and the driver of the minivan were also injured
in the collision.
A 29-year-old woman is in police custody and is set to appear
in bail court today.
Transport driver Stephan
LAVOIE said he was sleeping in his parked
rig when he heard the collision's impact.
"It's a big bang," he said.
The Quebec City resident looked out his cab's front window, but
saw nothing unusual, and went back to sleep.
"I said, 'Maybe it's a tire blowout,'"
LAVOIE said.
It wasn't until around 7: 30 a.m. that
LAVOIE learned what happened
from another transport driver.
"I remembered I heard something in the night. It's so painful,"
he said, tapping his heart.
DOUCET, who had served on the Sault force for 12 years, is survived
by his wife, Debbie, and his daughters Jocelyne, 19, and Courtney,
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty expressed his condolences to
the officer's family, Friends and colleagues.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Senior Const.
DOUCET's family,"
McGuinty said yesterday in a news release. "Policing is dangerous
work that takes a special commitment to community service. Sometimes
our officers make the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty
and such a loss is a tragedy for us all."
