LANGFORD,
Mary▲▼ -- Dispatch:
By Hayley MICK,
Page M4
She was caring and meticulous, yet Mary
LANGFORD could never
remember the first time she met her future husband, when they
were both university students spending the summer at home in
Chatham, Ontario
"I didn't make much of an impression," said Ken
LANGFORD, 88,
laughing.
They married in 1943, and soon afterward Mr.
LANGFORD was shipped
overseas to fight in the Second World War. Mrs.
LANGFORD returned
to Chatham to teach mathematics.
But after mortar fire paralyzed her husband, she became his primary
caregiver. "She had to get up every hour, on the hour, to turn
him over," recalled their only child, Ken (Jr.).
The LANGFORDs played a key role in the growth of the Canadian
Paraplegic Association, which was founded in 1945 by paralyzed
veterans.
When the association met in Toronto, Mrs.
LANGFORD hosted dinner
parties at their split-level bungalow in East York.
Getting 25 people in wheelchairs under one roof wasn't easy,
but Mrs. LANGFORD "had it down to a science after about the fifth
year," her son said.
While on vacation in Trinidad and Tobago in the mid-1950s, the
couple fell in love with the country and returned to the same
hotel each year for the next 30 years.
Those trips led to another outlet for Mary. For more than a decade,
she put on a Christmas dinner for 10 to 15 students from Trinidad
and Tobago who were attending university in Toronto.
"She was very, very kind," her husband said.
She died on January 29 at the age of 87.

Quietly and with dignity, Ken ended his long battle with skin
cancer at Ian Anderson House in Oakville, on Tuesday, April 18,
2006. Ken is survived by Joan

wife of 48 years and his children, Shawn, Joanne (Jim

Stephen (Terri

also be missed by his devoted grandchildren Jennifer, Alexandra,
Joshua, Joffre Reid and William. Ken only wishes he could have
enjoyed them when he was younger. Born in London, Ontario in
1930, the only child of Ernest Anderson
LAVERY and Norma Loretta
REID,
Ken began his multitude of careers as a deckhand. This
experience led him to realize the importance of education so
he took on a job as a tobacco primer to finance his future education.
After his service in Germany with the 27th Infantry Brigade and
working as short order chef, Ken continued his commitment to
lifelong learning as he worked through careers as teacher, devoted
husband, author, proud father, managing partner of Touche Ross
and P Ross. S. and Partners, President and Chief Executive Officer
of the Brewers Association of Canada, and caring grandfather.
Finally, Ken initiated a successful class action suit in the
United Kingdom versus Cuthbert Heath, 418 Merrett Insurance Syndicate
and Ernst and Whinny leading to Lloyd's of London making an offer
for 'final' settlement of all outstanding litigation accepted
by over 35,000 Names; but not this one. Well travelled and a
member of many professional associations and societies, Ken had
Friends and colleagues all around the world. Regardless of the
many international places he visited, Ken's favourite places
were found in his own backyard: Hardy Bay, Mississauga Golf Club,
Saint_James Oyster Bar, Royal Montreal and Ottawa Golf Clubs, Rideau
Club Billiards Room, Caledon Mountain Trout Club, East India
Club, The Ocean Club (Stuart, Florida) and fishing for sail off
the St. Lucie Inlet. Other favorite passions included the Forum
for Young Canadians and Trudeau Liberals. Visitation to be held
at P.X. Dermody Funeral Home (www.pxdermodyfuneral.com), located
on 7 East Avenue South in Hamilton, on Thursday, April 20 from

on Friday, April 21 at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Holy
Supulchre Cemetery. Donations to Ian Anderson House, 430 Winston

accepted. Ken was deeply appreciative of all his caregivers,

LEWIS,
Don (a.k.a. Lewis
GORDON)
With sadness we announce the passing of Don
LEWIS, at his home
in Stratford, Ontario, on Thursday, February 9, 2006. He was
70 years old. Don, who acted under the name of Lewis
GORDON,
was a member of the Stratford Festival Acting Company for 34
seasons and appeared in nearly 100 productions. Festival fans
will remember his appearances as Falstaff in Henry IV, Touchstone
in As You Like It, Puck in A Midsummer Nights Dream and
as Father
Damien in the one-person play, Damien. Don was born in Toronto
on August 7, 1935 to Gordon
LEWIS and Evelyn (Jocelyn)
LEWIS.
In 1957, fresh out of the Ontario College of Art, Don read in
the newspaper that Festival designer Tanya
MOISEIWITSCH was visiting
Toronto.
Don took his portfolio to Ms.
MOISEIWITSCH at her hotel.
So impressed was she with his art that she hired him on the spot
as a prop-maker. His career as an actor began almost by accident.
He was asked by an actor friend to appear as a scene partner
in an audition for Festival artistic director Michael
LANGHAM.
The next day, Mr.
LANGHAM pulled Don aside and told him "We're
not going to hire your friend, but how would you like to be in
the company?" In addition to the Stratford Festival, Don also
appeared at the Shaw Festival, the Grand Theatre (London, Ontario)
and Theatre Calgary. Don always had a love-hate relationship
with acting and it was his art that truly fed his soul. Don designed
the costumes for the Festival's 1967 production of Colours in
the Dark. He also produced murals, posters and exhibitions for
the Festival over the years as well as collages, drawings and
other artwork. Don was an accomplished photographer and among
company members it was always a treat when Don asked you to pose
for his camera. Cremation has taken place and a private funeral
will be held later this year in Harrington, Ontario, where Don
lived for 21 years.
