Of Beeville, Texas, passed away in his 67th year on December 22, 2005. John, formerly of Southampton, had a heart attack while visiting friend, Teresa GIMENEZ, in Mexico City. Predeceased by his mother, Jean Elizabeth LAMONT (HILLMER) and his father, Owen Blair LAMONT. Survived by his ex-wife, and mother of his children, Betty LAMONT, his brother George LAMONT (Beverly,) Aunt Pauline and Aunt Maribeth. He will be sadly missed by his son, John Mark LAMONT, his daughter Michelle Elizabeth LAMONT, and his grandchildren, Alexandra LAMONT- THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON, Chantal LAMONT, and Tyler LAMONT. He will also be missed by the many Friends he made everywhere he went, and especially by his special life-long Friends. All of his grandchildren were very special to him. In his 85th year, Douglas entered peacefully into rest at London Health Sciences Centre on Friday, December 22, 2006. Gentle and dearly loved, Douglas was predeceased by his wife Helen and survived by his brother Gordon, nieces Phyllis (Don) LAMONT, Linda (Graham) ENGLAND, Vicki (Bruce) HAMBLY and nephew Ronald. Also, predeceased by Maureen TRACEY and friend Myrtle Showers. Doug will be dearly missed by his close Friends Bill Huntley and Karen Brissette. Doug touched the lives of many people with his positive attitude and was an inspiration to all he came in contact with. Born in Toronto he lived in Rexdale and then moved to Wainfleet and most recently Welland. He worked at General Electric for over 40 years from where he retired in 1985. He was a member of the Wainfleet Congregational Christian Church and was an active member of the Rexdale Lacrosse League. An active resident of Ridgetown, Martin J. BROWN passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 in Chatham at the age of 74 years, after a brief battle with cancer. Beloved husband of Jewel (PEGG) BROWN. Loving father of Gwen KALYNIUK of Nelson, British Columbia David and Marcia BROWN of Timmins; James and Shannon BROWN of Waterloo; Margie and Steve LAMOURE of Chatham; and Rosemary and Jason DOUPE of North Bay. Martin will be sadly missed by grandchildren Troy, Julia, Victoria, Daniel, Benjamin, Isaac, Emma, Brad, and Mark. Also surviving is Brother Clare and Connie BROWN of Tilbury, sister-in-law Hélène NORWOOD of Chatham, and sister-in-law Irene PEGG of London. Predeceased by parents, Cecil and Gwendolyn BROWN, brother Lyle BROWN, sister Marjorie IRWIN and brother in-law Lawrence PEGG. Martin was a graduate of the University of Guelph and farmed in Tilbury East Township before he became a secondary school science teacher at R.D.H.S. until his retirement in 1987. He was a dedicated Evangelist of the Community of Christ church and an active member of Ridgetown Rotary Club where he served in many capacities including President. He was a member of the Ministerial Associations in both Ridgetown and Blenheim as well as a member of the Restorative Justice Committee for Chatham Kent. Martin will be fondly remembered as a caring and compassionate community member. Martin will be interred following a private family funeral service, in Stewart Cemetery, Merlin. A full Memorial Service will be conducted at the Ridgetown United Church at 1: 00 p.m. on April 29th. On Monday, September 25, 2006, Mrs. Thelma Doris LAMPHIER (nee MULHOLLAND,) of London, Ontario, in her 89th year, passed away in Edmonton, Alberta, surrounded by her loving family, following a celebration of the 65th Wedding Anniversary of Thelma and her devoted husband, Leo James LAMPHIER. Thelma's indelible spirit, irrepressible sense of humour, and undying devotion to her cherished husband and family will be remembered forever. Thelma was born a prairie girl, in Pontieux, Saskatchewan, where she lived as a child until her parents, Gwen MULHOLLAND (née PRYCE) and George, moved to London. One of nine children, Thelma was predeceased by her dear son Brian, her mother and father, her two brothers, Wilfred and Clifford, and three sisters, Helen, Dorothy and Ethel. Thelma is survived by her husband and lifelong best friend, Leo, two loving daughters, Brenda and Anne, three adoring sons, Steve, Gary and Wayne, their devoted spouses, Reid, Spencer, Deborah, Toni, and Diana, as well as six wonderful grandchildren: Trevor, Madeleine, Devon, Connor (LAMPHIER), Leigh and Kate (SALTERS), and her gorgeous, first great-grandchild, Anneli (OLSON.) Thelma is also survived by her youngest sister, Gladys (MERROW,) her younger brother Kenneth (MULHOLLAND) and her elder brother Howard (MULHOLLAND.) Toronto -- Bessie LAMSON, who worked hard all her life, died at the Carpenter Hospice in Burlington, Ontario, on June 24. She was 107.
Over the years, Ms. LAMSON toiled as a maid, put in time on an assembly line, worked at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens when it was first built in the 1920s and sold the first hot dog at the Air Canada Centre in 1999.
Born on February 8, 1899, she was the eldest of eight children born to Charles and Charlotte LAMSON, descendants of Empire Loyalists who had settled in Cardinal, Ontario She left home in her early teens to work at a hospital across the St. Lawrence River in Ogdensburg, N. Y, then moved to Toronto to become a maid at the Park Plaza Hotel.
Later, she worked for 12 years for the Elizabeth Arden beauty company, where she was employed in the lunch room, on the assembly line and in the packaging department. On her way to work one day, she noticed that houses were being torn down in Toronto to make way for a new hockey shrine to be known as Maple Leaf Gardens.
"She was very upset with the buildings being taken down and that some people would have no place to live," said her niece, Nancy MILLER- KARKOULAS, of Burlington. "But she said she couldn't do anything about it and decided she would go there and work part-time selling hot dogs."
When Ms. LAMSON's supervisor at the Gardens told her she couldn't listen to Leafs games on her transistor radio (her job was far from the playing surface), she quit and purchased season's tickets way up in the grey seats. On February 13, 1999, she attended the final game played at the Gardens and was on the ice for the final ceremonies.
When the Air Canada Centre replaced the Gardens, she was asked to sell the first hot dog there. The sale was made to Leafs owner Steve STAVRO. Ken DRYDEN, then club president, had been the intended target but he'd been delayed by traffic. Ms. LAMSON was fond of Mr. DRYDEN because, for many years, he had sent her birthday cards.
Ms. LAMSON, who liked a shot of brandy here and there, once explained the reasons for her longevity: "I did what I wanted to do, I never married and I never smoked."
