In loving memory of Kenneth Robert Kay "Kenny" August 17, 1985 - March 25,
2006 Kenny loved playing hockey (in net) and ball, and going fishing. He
loved playing cards, especially when moving from the small table to the big
table to play 31. He loved being at McDermids hunting camp with his Dad.
Kenny was a free spirit, he would hop on his motorcycle, or put out his
thumb, going places to be with his numerous Friends. Kenny was generous with
everything he had, especially his time. He loved his music, playing guitar,
and his drums. He really enjoyed spending time with all his cousins and
keeping the younger ones entertained. His greatest love was family and
Friends whom he cherished. Only child of Bob and Sarah Kay. Cherished
grand_son of Janet Kay (Ken predeceased), and Kathleen and Joseph Payette
(both predeceased). Loved nephew of Tabby and Charlene Kay, Ron and Tammie

Big band leader boosted spirits in tough times

Stan PATTON's poor eyesight kept him home during World War 2.
So while other young Canadians were picking up their guns and fighting in Europe, Patton picked up his tenor saxophone and helped those who were here fight their worries.
They came to the dance halls -- decked out in gowns and tuxedos to dance away their fears while Stan PATTON and his Orchestra was swinging on the bandstand.
PATTON died October 20 in a Richmond Hill hospital at the age of 91. But even in his last days, he was boosting the morale of his daughter, Holly BRIESMASTER, 58, and son, Brooke PATTON, 57, with flamboyant tales of his time as a big band leader.
"Dad was definitely a star. And if you wanted to be affirmed of that, all you had to do was ask him because he would certainly tell you," his son said.
PATTON's career spanned more than three decades and saw him play from coast to coast.
A clarinet and tenor sax player, he was one of a group of Canadian big band-era musicians whose bands grew in popularity in spite of, or perhaps due to, the Depression and, later, the war.
He played Toronto's Royal York Hotel and Casa Loma, the Lakeview Casino in Grand Bend and the Brant Inn in Burlington.
PATTON also performed on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Radio's Sweet and Low, and wrote music and comedy for other Canadian Broadcasting Corporation programs, such as Happy Gang and Newsical.
With his death, few musicians remain from that swing era.
"We're all dying," said Murray GINSBERG, 84, a retired trombonist, and former member of the Royal Canadian Army Show and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. "I knew Stan for years. He always had a good band."
PATTON was born to Irish parents in 1915 in St. Boniface, Manitoba, the youngest of nine children. He grew up in Vancouver, where he became the leader of a band in 1935.
"The nickname my dad had was 'Jazz,'" his daughter said. "His orchestra called him that. It gives you a sense of the sparkling quality about Stan PATTON."
In his unpublished memoirs, typed out in 1997, he recalls chatting on a wet morning in 1940 with his friend, Mart KENNEY, who was known as Canada's Big Band King.
PATTON wrote, "Mart, if it rains one more damn day (in Vancouver,) I'm gonna pack my sax, clarinet and tux, then I'm leaving this town forever."
KENNEY asked PATTON to join his legendary band, Mart KENNEY and his Western Gentlemen, as they relocated to Toronto. PATTON went home and said, "Mom, I'm going to Toronto with Mart KENNEY."
With KENNEY, PATTON went on a national tour. But the late nights caught up with him in the Winnipeg Arena.
"While the muted brass were playing the first chorus of 'Stardust,' I fell asleep, and when the sax section stood up to play the second chorus, (I) sat slumped down on (my) chair in dreamland," PATTON wrote.
He didn't rest long. By 1941, he had started his own orchestra in Toronto. Two years later, PATTON married Patricia Jean DUNCAN. He remarried in 1975 following Patricia's death in 1973.
When the age of the big band faded, PATTON got into real estate and made more money in his first week than he had earned in a month with the band.
"He really had a magnetic personality and he transferred his on-stage persona into being a good salesman," his son said.
But PATTON had one last summer as "Jazz" when, in 1962, he auditioned and was booked into the Imperial Room at the Royal York Hotel.
And he never really stopped putting on a show.
"Nobody was ever with my dad that they didn't laugh. Ever," Brooke said. "Sometimes you were laughing at the same band stories and jokes you had heard a hundred times."
In addition to his children, PATTON leaves a granddaughter. His family plans to mark his life on January 29, 2007, on what would have been his 92nd birthday.

Woman dies in single-car crash

Cardiac arrest is believed to have caused the death of a Meaford woman whose car left the road Thursday morning and crashed into a large tree.
A news release from the Grey County Ontario Provincial Police said the crash happened at about 7 a.m. on Edwin Street. A 1990 Oldsmobile Delta 88 left the roadway and drove up onto a lawn before hitting the tree, which is at a bend in the street.
The driver, Linda KENNICLE, 58, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said she had just left her house, located within a block, and was wearing her seatbelt.
A post-mortem was conducted in Owen Sound while police examined the crash scene. The news release said a medical cause was behind KENNICLE's death, if not the crash itself.

After a long and full life, Frank died peacefully surrounded by the love of his family, on Thursday, September 28, 2006, at Parkwood Mennonite Home, Waterloo. He was 90. He was a best friend and beloved husband to Margaret "Marg" (KENNY,) who together celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last October 11, 2005. Precious father to his four children, Pattie HODGE, Anne SCHARF and her husband Ted, Tom and his friend Nancy and Dan and his wife Laurie all of Kitchener Waterloo. Grandpa was cherished by his grandchildren, Tracie STEFFLER (Dan,) Brad HODGE (Michelle,) Katie and Matthew O'REILLY and Alex SCOTT. He was a very proud great grandfather to Brooklyn, Christopher and Carter STEFFLER and Raine HODGE. KENNY, William " Billy" H.R.
Of Stouffville, Ontario, died Tuesday, January 17, 2006, at Markham-Stouffville Hospital. He was born August 15, 1942, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Billy (Papa) was a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He was a painter by trade, most recently working for the Toronto District School Board. Surviving are his wife Margaret son Bill and daughter-in-law Beth Ann KENNY of Beaverton with granddaughter Katie and grand_son Sean; son David and David's partner Anne of Manchester, England with grand_son Ryan; daughter Cathy of Stouffville with granddaughters Caitlin and Sarah; and David's daughter, granddaughter Ashley SOMMERVILLE of Oakville. Others mourning Billy's death include his sister Annie and brother-in-law Billy CAUGHY of Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland and their family his brother Gordon and sister-in-law Gloria of Belfast, Northern Ireland, along with their family; his sister Jean and brother-in-law Victor FARR of Auckland, New Zealand and their family; and Margaret's brother Jim HAMILTON and sister-in-law Norah of Belfast, Northern Ireland and their family. Also, after having lived close by and spending many weekends together at Loon Lake Resort, Billy will also be sincerely missed by his brother Jackie and sister-in-law Joan KENNY of Oshawa, along with nieces Irene and Sharon and their families. Family and Friends are invited to attend the visitation at the Mangan Funeral Home, 332 Osborne Street, Beaverton (705-426-5777) on Friday, January 20th from 2: 00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7: 00 to 9:00 p.m. The funeral will be officiated by the Rev. Barney GRACE at Beaverton Presbyterian Church, 413 Simcoe Street, Beaverton at 11: 00 a.m., Saturday, January 21, 2006. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Princess Margaret Hospital to help others fight their battles with cancer will be accepted through the Mangan Funeral Home.

Peacefully, with her family, on March 25, 2006, in Scarborough, in her 75th year. Deeply missed by her loving husband George. Much loved mother of sons Rick and wife Thora, and Keith and wife Lynn.
