KEEBLE,
Gordon,▼ 88
Executive helped form the CTV network
By Sandra MARTIN,
Page S9
Although he planned to be an accountant, Gordon
KEEBLE, who died
in Ottawa yesterday of heart failure aged 88, was easily seduced
into broadcasting by his English high-school teacher in Toronto
in the 1930s. He went on to become an executive in the television
and cable industries in Canada and a founding member of Alliance
of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists, the performers
union.
After freelancing as a radio actor and singer, Mr.
KEEBLE was
hired by radio station
CFCH in North Bay in 1940 and later worked
for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, becoming chief announcer
for CJBC
Toronto, the anchor station for what was then the Dominion
Network.
In 1946, he left to head up the newly formed radio department
of the F.H. Hayhurst advertising agency in Toronto. Two years
later, he went back to radio, becoming manager of
CFCF
Radio
in Montreal. He then switched to television, hooking up with
television entrepreneur Spence
CALDWELL to form the CTV television
network. Under Mr.
CALDWELL, he became executive vice-president
of the network in 1961, president four years later and eventually
chair and Chief Executive Officer.
He left CTV late in 1968 and went into a new partnership with
Mr. CALDWELL, winning one of the first cable-television licences
from the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission.
Clear Colour Cable morphed into Keeble Cable, which was eventually
absorbed by Rogers Cable.

Students grieve classmate, 17
Killed in minivan crash Wednesday
'You were the most amazing guy ever'
By Naomi CARNIOL,
Staff
Reporter
The Canadian flag in front of Metropolitan Preparatory Academy
stood at half-mast yesterday in honour of Griffin
KEELEY, a Grade
12 student who died in a minivan crash Wednesday.
Three other students from the school survived the accident.
KEELEY,
17, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police did not release the victim's name, but a student at the
school confirmed his identity.
"He was my best friend," the student said. "He was one of the
funniest people I ever met."
KEELEY had hoped to go to Dalhousie University in Halifax after
graduation, the student said.
Around noon yesterday, students carried bouquets of roses to
the site of the accident on Bartley Dr., near Victoria Park Ave.
and Eglinton Ave. E., about a 15-minute walk from the private
school.
The students cried and hugged. Some left notes.
"Griffin you were the most amazing guy ever... I'll always miss
you," one note said.
The accident occurred about 11: 20 a.m. Wednesday when a minivan
with four 17-year-olds was travelling east on Bartley Dr., police
said. KEELEY was in the front passenger seat.
Police are investigating whether the van was travelling at a
high speed before the driver lost control and the van rolled
over several times before stopping on a lawn. No charges have
been laid against the driver.
Edgar WARREN, a sales representative at nearby Westburne Ruddy
Electric, was in the company's showroom at the time. "I heard
a big bang and looked up and saw a kid underneath the car," he
said.
He and several other employees ran outside, lifted the van and
used pipes to keep it from toppling over again.
The driver of the van was treated in hospital for non-life-threatening
injuries. Two other passengers were treated at the scene for
minor injuries.
An unmarked police cruiser might have chased the van, an emergency
worker who asked to remain anonymous told the Star.
"I'm not aware of that, and if it had been the Special Investigations
Unit would have been involved," Staff Sgt. Keith
HAINES said.
The Special Investigations Unit investigates when a civilian
is seriously hurt or dies and the police are involved.
