Teen dies playing hockey
Alex CORRANCE died while playing in a minor hockey tournament.
By Lois KALCHMAN,
Debra
BLACK, Toronto
Star with files from John
GODDARD
It was the beginning of what was supposed to be an action-packed
AAA hockey tournament, but the game ended in tragedy yesterday
with the death of a 17-year-old hockey player.
Alex CORRANCE -- the only child of Mississauga Rebels Midget
AAA team manager Alan
CORRANCE -- died of an apparent heart
attack.
The teen's father had been on the bench at Ice Sports Scarborough
when his son collapsed. He had raced out on the ice to help,
not realizing the fallen player was his flesh and blood.
The teen, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound defenceman for the Rebels, had
just come out from behind the net, his shorthanded team killing
a penalty early in the game as they played against archrivals,
the Mississauga Ice Dogs.
CORRANCE -- considered one of the healthiest players on the team
skated to the top of the faceoff circle.
With the Ice Dogs scoring a tying goal, the Grade 12 student
at Oakville Trafalgar High School suddenly buckled and dropped
to the ice.
A referee skated past and then cut back around, asking if he
was all right.
Two trainers quickly raced onto the ice and tried to save his
life, using a defibrillator. An Royal Canadian Mounted Police
officer and some off-duty firefighters and nurses also joined
them. Somebody called 911. But there was no pulse.
Firefighters and ambulance personnel arrived and took over, beginning
cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and rushing him to Markham Stouffville
Hospital, to no avail. His father, who loved hockey and spent
endless hours managing teams in Oakville, later told team officials
his son "went down doing something he absolutely loved doing."
Alan CORRANCE said he was dreading going home to tell Alex's
grandparents the news.
When contacted by the Star, a person at the
CORRANCE home in
Oakville said: "We're not interested in speaking to anyone right
now."
Rebels coach Victor
CRISCUOLO was still trying last night to
piece together what happened earlier in the day as his team participated
in its first game of the 2006 Showcase Major Midget Prospect
Tournament, run by the Wexford Raiders.
"I'm still numb, still in shock," he said. "He basically collapsed
on the ice. There was no contact… no one touched him, nothing.
"You wake up in the morning, the day after Christmas expecting
to play in a tournament and to have fun. Our thoughts and prayers
of the whole team all go towards the
CORRANCE family.
"Alex was a tremendous kid, just a great kid. He was always upbeat,
an absolutely beautiful person. He was a good hockey player but
a better person. He was always a pleasure to be around."
CRISCUOLO said Alex spent the summer trying to prepare for the
jump to tier two Junior A hockey, but he was a late cut.
"I knew the kid and knew of the dad," he said recollecting the
call in late September to take Alex on his Rebels team.
The Scarborough midget tournament -- one of dozens running across
the Greater Toronto Area during the Christmas break -- was a
big event, with 20 teams from across southern Ontario, Ottawa,
Kingston and Detroit competing over three days.
Now, CRISCUOLO is worried about the impact Alex's death will
have on his team and is seeking grief counselling for his players
through the Greater Toronto Hockey League or the Ontario Hockey
Federation.
"It's a cruel life -- it's one of those lessons in life,"
CRISCUOLO
said.
Alex's teammates will miss "just seeing him smile or listening
to his iPod before the game."
Bart MARCOLINI, general manager of the Rebels, was also stunned
by yesterday's tragedy. "You feel badly if someone gets a concussion
or breaks an arm or leg but this, this is terrible. He was probably
one of the healthiest on the team.
"You'd think there would be signs, but there weren't. I've been
in hockey for 66 years and nothing like this has ever happened
before."
Despite the sudden death, the tournament is scheduled to continue
minus the Mississauga Rebels. General manager
MARCOLINI has
pulled the team from the tournament, saying he wouldn't expect
the teenaged players to continue.
The Ice Dogs also decided to forgo playing the team's other game
yesterday. Some of their players knew
CORRANCE and were also
in shock over his death, said the Rebels' coach. Tournament director
Mike BRADLEY said he assumed the Ice Dogs would withdraw as well.
Greater Toronto Hockey League officials were stunned by the tragic
turn of events. Greater Toronto Hockey League president John
GARDNER said he couldn't think of another instance of something
like this happening on ice during the three decades he has been
with the league.
"What a tremendous shock it must be for everyone and during Christmas,"
he said.
"There were no signs of any problem… nothing."
An autopsy is scheduled for today.
