Joseph

Chauffeur, Jesuit Brother, cook. Born October 27, 1923, in Pakenham,
Ontario Died September 15 in Pickering, Ontario, of melanoma,
aged 82.
Dan was the equivalent of Hudson from the 1970s television series,
Upstairs, Downstairs.
The youngest child of Thomas and Mabel
(ROBERTSON)
BYRNE,
Dan
grew up in the Ottawa Valley. Scarcely a month old, Dan lost
his mother; some years later, his father. Dan was raised by a
neighbour woman, "Mother Farrell" and her two youngest Aileen
and Vera (the Farrell family had 11 children). Three sisters,
Elizabeth, Margaret and Mary, were taken by the Grey Nuns in
Ottawa. The eldest, John, remained at home. Dan often recounted
John's departure: He "disappeared" leaving behind a note on the
kitchen table addressed "to whom it may concern." That was the
last Dan heard of his brother till the war office announced his
death in Europe.
Intellectually gifted, Dan enjoyed reading, drama, theatre, opera
and history. Poverty necessitated a paying job, as a projectionist,
at age 16. Dan, never at ease with things mechanical, learned
how to drive on the country roads of Pakenham.
The Depression left a deep mark on Dan. He took to calling himself
"Brother Pinchpenny." During one winter storm, the wind snatched
a $50 bill from his grasp. The following spring there was not
a snow bank in the neighbourhood that escaped his inspection.
Yet, shortly before his death, someone gave him a gift of $100
instead of treating himself, Dan gave it to the Food Bank.
When he arrived in Toronto, he applied for and got a job as a
chauffeur and "Hudson" to a wealthy man. Things got off to a
bad start: One of his first driving assignments was to drive
from downtown Toronto up the steep hills of Avenue Road in rush
hour -- in the days before automatic transmissions. Poor Dan's
chauffeuring career almost came to a crashing halt as he sweated
his way up the slopes in the heavy traffic, offering up many
a Hail Mary with each stop. Dan's prayers were heard; he managed
to manoeuvre through the traffic that first night and for the
next 20 years he served as a chauffeur.
Dan was ever-loyal to his family, the Farrells, his many Friends
and his Jesuit community. His Catholic faith was everything throughout
his life: Dan wanted to serve. The service of raising a family
did not draw him so much as a life of service to the church.
In 1961 he arrived at Guelph to join as a lay brother (brothers
choose to serve in non-ordained roles). For the next 45 years
Dan became "Hudson" to seven Jesuit Provincials: taking care
of the kitchen, the housecleaning, hospitality and chauffeuring&hellip
and a solid sip of sherry before dinner.
Shy and introverted by nature, Dan related graciously with the
neighbours along the streets where he lived in west Toronto.
Once an elderly neighbour called the police to discipline two
five-year-olds gleefully enjoying the March winds blowing the
contents of a feather pillow onto his lawn. Dan smoothed the
ruffled feathers of the old man, restoring order without police
intervention.
Each day began, during those 45 Jesuit years, with Dan at Massachusetts.
I recall once Dan was the reader. As he read out the passage
"Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged", Dan broke down, his
copious tears a tender witness to his vivid imagination.
Late this past July Dan took seriously ill. He hated going to
the doctor. The diagnosis was swift and final: cancer. The melanoma
had spread to several parts of the body. At 82, Dan chose not
to have treatment: His service was done, the final glide path
had begun, palliative care was in order. Dan died early in the
morning -- a man of service, fully at peace -- a "brother" whose
life touched deeply all who knew him.
J.P. HORRIGAN is a friend of Dan
BYRNE.
