John
Passed away peacefully on the morning of April 7, 2006 at the
Saanich Peninsula Hospital, British Columbia. John was born in
Edmonton in 1928, and moved to Saskatoon in 1941. He attended
Saskatoon Technical Collegiate Institute 1942-46, University
of Saskatchewan 1946-51 where he received a B.A. degree in May 1949 and
in 1951 an M.A. degree in Food Chemistry. In 1949 John met Leone
CARD, sister of a classmate, Walter. John was accepted as a post-graduate
student in the Food Chemistry Department of Agricultural Biochemistry
at the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota, St. Paul,
Minnesota in September 1951. Leone and John became engaged on
New Year's Eve 1951 and married on August 14, 1952. John earned
his Ph.D. in Agricultural Biochemistry in July 1955 and started
at Procter and Gamble in a position in their Research Division
in Cincinnati, Ohio August 1955. Both sons, Mitchell and Kevin
were born in Cincinnati. John started work in Montreal on December 1,
1963 as Director of Research for the Ogilvie Flour Mills Co. Ltd.
John and family moved to Ottawa in 1973 to work with the Research
Division of Agriculture Canada as Director of the Food Research
Institute. In February 1984 moved to work with The Griffith Laboratories Ltd.
in the city of Scarborough while living in Unionville. John retired
from Griffith on December 31, 1990. John and Leone moved to Sidney,
British Columbia in mid-January 1991. John is survived by his
wife Leone, children Mitchell, wife Barb and Kevin, wife France,
grandchildren Keegan and Sydney, sister Delia and nieces Elizabeth,
Christine and Kate. At John's request there will be no service.

home on Westmount Hill on April 21, 1938, Jack was an only child.
He was encouraged at a young age to pursue his studies and sports.
At 6'4" with red hair, Jack was quite the offensive lineman for
South Collegiate where he met his future wife Nancy Jane. Jack
received his Honours Degree in Economics from the University
of Western Ontario in 1960. Jack played offensive line for the
Mustangs and was proud to be on the team the year that the Stangs
were undefeated. Jack was also a loyal member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
Jack's career involved human resources management of Somerville
Industries and Wolverine Tube before taking the position of Vice
President, Human Resources at University Hospital when the hospital
opened its doors in 1971 until his retirement. Jack was dedicated
to his volunteer work and was on the Board of Directors for the
W Club (U.W.O.), Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Rotary,
Victim Services and London Community Foundation. Jack and Nancy
Jane were both heavily involved in their church Saint_John's. Jack
has a huge circle of Friends and especially enjoyed his weekly
lunch with his buddies at the Ceeps. Jack loved to fish at the
Key River, golf at Sunningdale, travel the world with Nancy Jane,
and most of all be with his children and grandchildren, especially
at the family cottage in Grand Bend. Friends may call on Thursday
from 1-3 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the James A. Harris Funeral Home,
220 St. James Street at Richmond, London. The funeral service

on Tuesday Feburary 7, 2006 in her 86th year. Predeceased by
her husband Garth. She leaves children Howard (Lois), Paul, Bill

Virginia, Alex, Miranda, Geoffrey, Matthew and Charlie. Remembered
lovingly by her sisters Mildred and Gwen and her nephews Bob,

of the amalgamated newspaper, The Globe and Mail. Later he was
an integral part of the Canadian Daily Newspapers Publishers
Association. Carol trained in Radiotherapy at the Toronto General
Hospital, and was a therapist at the Princess Margaret Hospital
when it was first established. She had a long career in treatment
of cancer, including working at a hospital in Wisconsin, and
then finally at the Cancer Clinic in Thunder Bay. She is survived
by her sister, Nancy

attended Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick -
B.Sc. 1939, McGill University, P.Q. - B.Eng. 1942, graduating
with honours and winning the British Association Medal. After
graduation he joined the Aluminum Company of Canada. In 1942
Vere chose to serve in World War 2 with the Royal Canadian Navy
on the Escourt Frigate H.M.C.S. Carlplace until 1946 and was
discharged with rank of Lieutenant (E) R.C.N.V.R. After the war
he joined George Hardy Ltd., General Contractors in Toronto from
1945-1953. Vere then joined Perini General Contractors Ltd. as
Chief Engineer in 1953 and was appointed Vice President in 1957.
In 1960 Vere founded V.K. Mason Construction Ltd. in Toronto
and established offices in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Edmonton. Some
of their projects included: Royal Bank of Canada Building, North
York General Hospital, Commerce Court, Four Seasons Sheraton
Hotel, Royal Bank Plaza, The Atrium on Bay and Two Bloor West
in Toronto; the National Arts Centre, the National Science Library
Carlton University and Place Guy Favreau in Ottawa; the Rupertsland
Square and Seven Oaks General Hospital in Winnipeg. In 1988,
Vere received an honourary Doctorate of Engineering from the
Technical University of Nova Scotia. Vere was a member of the
Beaumaris Yacht Club in Bracebridge, a founding member of Loxahatchee
Club in Jupiter, Florida, and the Donalda Club in Toronto. All
who met him were richer by knowing him. He was the kind of man
that was a true role model for others. The lessons that he taught
by way of his life were by the example that he set. He had a
commanding height and stature that always left an impression
on others. Even people who only knew him for a short period of
time were drawn to him because of his sincere and humble nature.
He will be truly missed. Special heartfelt thanks to all those
who wanted to make sure that he was as comfortable and as well

In Memory of Marcus Hughes
HOLMES, born January 1913, at Alsask,
Saskatchewan, died September 29, 2006 at Ganges, Salt Spring
Island, British Columbia He grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia
and married Gertrude
KELLETT with whom he had 2 sons, Barry and
Donald. During this time, he started the Mount Pleasant regional
newspaper in West Vancouver. In 1942, Marc enlisted in the Royal
Canadian Artillery and served in England, Italy, France, Belgium
and the Netherlands. He returned to Canada in 1946, and continued
his army career until his retirement in 1962 with the rank of
Major. After the death of his wife Rudie, Marc married Nursing
Sister Jean
DOERR in 1959, and settled with her on Isabella Point,
Salt Spring Island in 1962. Together, they developed a successful
fruit and vegetable farm. Holmes Road on Isabella Point is named
after Marc. A strong advocate of land conservation and maintenance
of the rural character of the Gulf Islands, Marc became very
interested and active in Island politics. He served 2 terms as
Regional Director for Salt Spring on the Capital Regional Board.
He was instrumental in the regional land use planning for Salt
Spring and the outer islands. He was appointed to the Islands
Trust in 1974 where he served as Vice-Chairman for two years
and another two years as Chairman. In his later years, Marc maintained
an active interest in preservation of the Island way of life.
Together with Jean, he enjoyed a well deserved full retirement
and travelled extensively to Asia, Europe and South America.
He is survived by his loving wife Jean, sons Barry (Jane), and
Don (Judy), 4 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. The family
is sincerely grateful for all the loving care given to Marc during
his stay at Greenwoods. In celebration of Marc's life, his family
invite his many Friends to a reception on Sunday, October 15
at the Harbour House Hotel, Ganges, from 1 to 4 p.m.

After graduating from
Havergal College and Victoria College, U of T, Anne studied the
cello and violin at The Royal Conservatory of Music and later
at the Interlochen Music Camp, Michigan. A restless soul, Anne
lived in various small Ontario towns and was invited to play
the cello in local orchestras. Excellent at crafts, Anne had
her own business designing and building doll houses and Noah's
Arks. Many a lucky child was the recipient of one of these. Anne's
dogs Bouvie and Boz were her much loved constant companions.
She loved music, nature and animals. Anne's family will never
forget the happy get togethers we had with her. A lot of laughs
and fun! She will be missed by her long time friend and school
mate Pat Anderson

Helen went home to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ
on Tuesday, March 28, 2006, in her 86th year. Helen is survived
by her husband Ernie. Together they ministered to 13 churches
in the Atlantic provinces and Ontario, over a period of more
than 40 years. Much loved mother of Paul and his wife Marilyn
