HERDER,
Hubert
Clinton, 1916 -- Died This Day
Soldier born in Saint John's on June 24, 1892.
Part of a group known as "The First Five Hundred," he was the
third man to enlist in the First Newfoundland Regiment and was
sent off to fight in the trenches of France. A graduate of Guelph
Agricultural College, he was one of four siblings who served
during the First World War. Two of his brothers, Arthur and Ralph,
fought beside him at Beaumont Hamel, France, on July 1, 1916.
Arthur was killed the next year at Cambrai, and Ralph survived
four years of warfare, although he was wounded several times.
A sister, Elsie, drove an ambulance in France. Hubert was one
of 272 young Newfoundlanders who went over the top on that morning
and lost their lives at Beaumont Hamel. The regiment suffered
more casualties than any other unit on the battlefield, a death
toll that is sometimes considered to be the single greatest disaster
in Newfoundland history. Hubert took with him a tiny Bible given
to him by St. Andrew's Church in Saint_John's on October 4, 1914.
Inscribed in it are the words: "Watch ye, stand fast in the faith,
quit you like men, be strong."

Woman's last days a mystery
Line THERRIEN left her home two days before her body was found.
By April KEMICK, Free Press Reporter, Fri., July 14, 2006
London police are trying to nail down what happened in the final
hours of a Saint Thomas woman's life, after her body was found
floating in the Thames River Saturday night.
Line THERRIEN, 36, was last seen alive about midnight last Thursday,
walking near her Saint Thomas home, police said.
Two people fishing found her body 48 hours later, in the Thames
River near Wellington Street in London.
What happened in the two-day period between the time
THERRIEN
was last seen alive and the time she was found dead is central
to the police investigation, Const. Amanda
PFEFFER said yesterday.
"We need to speak with anyone who may have spoken with her in
those two days," she said.
"We just don't know."
THERRIEN, whose name and picture police released yesterday hoping
someone might have information on her final hours, lived with
her partner, Frank, on Mondamin Street near Saint Thomas's downtown
strip.
The couple's tidy, powder-blue home, surrounded by a white picket
fence and decorated with several potted plants, was quiet yesterday
but for the barking of dogs.
A next-door neighbour said the pair had asked him to take care
of the dogs Saturday.
Charles HERDMAN said the couple had planned a day trip to Port
Dover.
But when
HERDMAN talked to Frank, he was told
THERRIEN wasn't
home yet and he wouldn't need to come over to watch the dogs.
HERDMAN, who described
THERRIEN as a "nice woman" who spoke with
a French accent, said he couldn't remember the last time he saw
her.
Police described her as white, about five-foot-six and 140 pounds,
with short blond hair. She was last seen wearing blue jeans,
a red top and sandals.
Police haven't found the black leather purse
THERRIEN is believed
to have been carrying when she left her home.
How To Help
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 519-661-5670
or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

"May she dance by the light of the moon, the moon, may she dance

As we sang her sweet dreams and said our goodbyes, Alice
VAN
DIEPEN
(POMEROY) left us to dance with the stars on Tuesday,
June 13, 2006 in her 93rd year. A truly remarkable woman, Alice,
forever known as Pommey, lived an incredible life. The saddened
hearts of her daughters Kristin (Gordon)
JOHNSON and Linda (Don)
JONES and son Rudi
VAN
DIEPEN, will be lightened with all of
the memories of her wonderful years. Pommey's 11 grandchildren
and 8 great-grandchildren were blessed to know such an amazing
lady and value every wise word and treasured memory she ever
shared. Always quick with her wonderful smile and wit, generous
with her hugs and kisses, she was the definition of love, strength
and courage. As a graduate of the Victoria School of Nursing
(1936), she nurtured and nursed all those around her, including
her husband Glenn (1989) and her daughter Mary (1986). As we
wrap ourselves in the homemade afghans, don our wool mitts and
hats, and snuggle with the knit toys, all of those close to her
will know her loving embrace will be with us forever. Her unequivocal
love and understanding, her ability to see the good in everyone,
and her open-mindedness to accept all for who they are, have
become lessons in life to be carried on by those of us that loved
her. The staff at London Health Sciences Centre provided wonderful
care and we offer a special thank you to Doctor Dorli
