Verna
Doreen (née
STEPHENSON)
In her 84th year, with deep sadness, her family wishes to announce
the passing of an extraordinary woman after a courageous battle
at Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital on Thursday, July 13, 2006. Verna's
life began on February 23, 1923 in Regina, Saskatchewan when
she was born to the most wonderful parents, Verner and Edna Mae
STEPHENSON (predeceased in 1969 and 1972.) In 1947 she married
the late Jack Christopher
HAWKEN, her knight in shining armour,
with whom she enjoyed 52 years. In 1949 she gave birth to her
cherished daughter Barbara Christine, who will never be the same
without her Mom's strength, encouragement, and daily talks. In
1954 she gave birth to Jimmy, who she spent 27 years caring for
(with never a complaint) until his death in 1981. Her energy
and contagious laughter will also be remembered by her brother-in-law
"Bobbie" and her sister-in-law Joan, as well as her nieces and
nephews Donald, Robert, Randy, Susan, Chris, and Kathy, along
with their children, and the late Jo Ann (1975) and John (1980)
HAWKEN.
She was also predeceased by her brother-in-law Bill and
her sister-in-law Luella. She will also be missed by her son-in-law
Bill BROWN and his dad Bill, mom Sophie, sisters Mary and Devon,
and daughter Elizabeth. And we can't forget "Jackson", Bill and
Barbara's 110 pound black lab who loved to visit in her backyard
and chase the squirrels. A day did not go by without her Friends
and neighbours who devoted many hours of their time to her needs,
especially near the end. They will always be remembered as her
guardian angels. In return she loved to cook and bake for them,
which had always been her favorite pastime. As well, she loved
to play the piano whether it be at parties, functions, Sunday
School, or just for herself and her Friends and family. Verna's
life was always full of activities, ranging from curling, politics,
working as a secretary at Riverside High School, or traveling
to Florida with Jack. She will be remembered and missed by everyone
who knew her. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be
held on Monday, July 17, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Janisse Bros-Marcotte
Funeral Home (519-253-5225), 1139 Ouellette Avenue. She will
then be taken to London, Ontario to be buried at Mt. Pleasant
Cemetery alongside her family. Friends and relatives are all
welcome to join the graveside service there at 3 p.m. A tree
will be planted in memory of Verna in the Janisse Bros-Marcotte

TARKANYI,
Nancy
Kathleen -- Dispatch:
By Jeffrey
HAWKINS,
Page▼ M6
Nancy TARKANYI loved to dance. Ballet, ballroom, stage -- you
name it, she did it all.
Her elegance and determination even caught the eye of a Life
magazine photographer when she was 16 and performing across England
with a travelling theatre production of Snow White.
Nancy Kathleen
WOODALL was born in Stockport, England, on October
5, 1930, and essentially she lived two successful lives.
In her early life, she enjoyed a career as a performer, winning
numerous trophies, medals and certificates during the 1950s for
her work in productions staged everywhere from London to Paris.
That was before a young waiter, Joszef
TARKANYI, working at a
dance club where she was performing, asked her to marry him (she
said yes) -- and she emigrated with him to Canada.
Settling in Toronto, Mrs.
TARKANYI left behind the theatre for
a career at the Ontario Workmen's Compensation Board, where each
year she helped to organize elaborate staff Christmas parties
that are still fondly remembered.
"She had a way about her that everyone noticed," recalls Josephine
LYONS, a cousin of hers.
"She was a very determined and opinionated woman, but she had
such elegance in everything she did."
In fact, in the weeks before her death, Mrs.
TARKANYI astounded
the hospital staff at St. Joseph's Health Centre with her determination,
as she continued her daily ritual of leg stretches.
"It must have seemed odd to them, but that's just the kind of
confidence she had with herself and her body," said her cousin's
husband, Bob
LYONS.
Nancy TARKANYI died on February 4. She was 75.

North York shooting is city's 11th homicide
By Jeffrey
HAWKINS,
Page▲▼
A12
Police were searching North York yesterday for a young mother
and her seven-month-old daughter who may have a connection to
the city's latest homicide.
At 9 p.m. Sunday, police found the body of 22-year-old Christopher
PELLEW on Lindylou Road, in the Finch Avenue West and Weston
Road area of North York.
Mr. PELLEW,
Toronto's 11th homicide this year, was fatally shot
in the chest, police say.
Superintendent Roy
PILKINGTON of 31 Division said that after
finding the body, investigators discovered a trail in the mud
that suggested the body had been dragged about 50 metres through
several backyards.
The trail led police to a basement apartment on Daystrom Drive,
directly behind Lindylou Road, where the shooting is believed
to have occurred.
When police arrived at the residence, across the street from
Daystrom Public School, the front door was open and the lights
on. The tenants, Zalika
ELLIS, 19, and her seven-month-old daughter,
Zahara, were gone.
"It was apparent that they had left in quite the hurry," Supt.
PILKINGTON said.
Ms. ELLIS's family, who contacted police after hearing about
the incident, are concerned for the young woman's safety, police
said.
Neighbours on Daystrom Drive, a residential street lined with
semi-detached houses, describe Ms.
ELLIS as a caring young mother.
"We've never had any trouble with her before," said her next-door
neighbour, Christan
GAIBOR.
"She's a good mother who keeps to herself," Christan's father,
Medardo, added.
"I feel really shocked," said one neighbour who asked not to
be named.
"We live in a safe family community with children and schools
and parks. This sort of thing just doesn't happen here."
"It's really sad," said a young neighbour who lives adjacent
to Ms. ELLIS's home. "I didn't see what happened last night but
I'm still scared."
Neighbouring homes were cordoned off by police yesterday and
several vehicles were impounded, including one rental car that
police believe is associated with the incident.
Mr. PELLEW was "very well known to police" with a "significant
criminal record for various crimes," Supt.
PILKINGTON said.

MAZZA,
Joshua -- Dispatch:
By Jeffrey
HAWKINS,
Page▲ M6
His time on earth may have been short, but Joshua
MAZZA managed
to touch the hearts of many. Although his family mourns him as
a loved one, friend John
BLUM believes "we likely lost a future
leader, as well."
A gifted athlete and student and a loving son, Joshua seemed
to excel in everything he did -- even when the odds were against
him.
One of only two Grade 9 students at Michael Power High School
to be chosen for the football team, Joshua dislocated a shoulder
during his first practice but continued to attend every practice
just to cheer on his teammates.
"He loved everyone, and everyone seemed to love him," said Michael
MAZZA,
Joshua's godfather and uncle. He had a passion for history:
Book after book, he submerged himself in the footsteps of mankind.
It was a subject his parents, Chris
MAZZA and Lori
MAZZA-
WEBB,
and his stepparents, Kathy
MAZZA and David
WEBB, thought he might
one day pursue as his profession. Joshua also took an interest
in acting, artistry and cooking -- especially Thai food.
"If I had to sum him up," said Mr.
BLUM, "
I'd call Joshua a true
Renaissance man."
Joshua died on March 5, 2006, after suffering a severe fall while
skiing. He was 14.

ROBERTS,
William
Hardy
By Roy MacSKIMMING,
Page
A26
Husband, father, bookseller, poet, gentleman. Born September 8,
1931, in Aberdeen, Scotland. Died November 9, 2005, in Burritt's
Rapids, Ontario, of natural causes, aged 74.
Along with his deep knowledge and love of literature, Bill possessed
a kindly charm and keen sensibility. He could read his customers
a mile away. He'd emerge from the rear of the store, tall, elegant
and bearded, and gently introduce them to just the authors they
were looking for -- even when they hadn't yet realized it.
Bill raised Ottawa's literary standards. His clientele ran from
John Diefenbaker and Lester Pearson to Pierre Trudeau and Ed
Broadbent. When the Prime Minister's Office or the Department
of Foreign Affairs needed a gift for a visiting V.I.P., they
knew whom to call. And over the years, Bill mentored a new generation
of booksellers.
Bill was a complex, multifaceted man: a very private person yet
a loyal friend and boon companion; a businessman yet an accomplished
poet. Growing up in wartime in the English industrial city of
Leeds, he was an autodidact who immersed himself in books. His
friend Gordon
BULLOCK recalls Bill as a perfect gentleman, even
as a teenager: "Dressing in tweeds, smoking a magnificent pipe,
wearing a stylish hat, all of which gave him the air of a young
academic."
Bill moved to London, where he reported for the Fish Fryers Gazette
and frequented the theatre. A friend of his, a penniless young
actor named Peter O'Toole, slept on his floor while seeking parts
in the West End.
In search of better prospects, Bill emigrated to Canada in 1954
with Gordon
BULLOCK, who would become publisher of the Hamilton
Spectator. A few years later Bill was happily working at Leishman's.
As Mr. BULLOCK puts it, "He'd travelled 3,000 miles to find his
true home." Bill bought the business in 1961 in partnership with
Peggy BLACKSTOCK, raised its stature, and moved the store uptown
near Parliament Hill.
Farsighted and imaginative, Bill
ROBERTS became a force for innovation
and professionalism in the book trade. In 1972, he opened satellite
stores in Ottawa and Victoria under the name Books Canada, selling
exclusively Canadian titles. He was elected president of the
Canadian Booksellers Association, fostered bookseller education,
and promoted publisher-bookseller co-operation in bringing electronic
commerce to the industry.
Although he was serious about business, Bill's first love was
literature. Ottawa poet William
HAWKINS recalls Bill approaching
him after a reading to share his enthusiasms for Eliot and Auden.
The two became Friends, and Bill shared his own poetry with Mr.
HAWKINS,
who was struck by its craft, wit and poignancy.
Another colleague, bookseller-turned-publisher Al
CUMMINGS, became
a close friend. He and Bill travelled widely together in search
of history, art, good cigars and fine scotch. They marked the
millennium by flying from New York to London on the Concorde,
visiting galleries and theatres, and returning on the Queen Elizabeth II.
Bill immortalized their adventures in a satirically nostalgic
verse, Like-Minded Gents.
Bill enjoyed the tranquillity of life with his wife Carole and
daughters Stephanie and Victoria in the small village of Burritt's
Rapids near Ottawa. For some years after he sold Leishman's in
1992, he and Carole ran a lovely antiquarian bookshop in nearby
Merrickville, but Bill's failing health eventually caused them
to retire. One of his last and most moving poems begins: I hope
the better part / Of who we are / May be remembered.
Writer Roy
MacSKIMMING is a colleague and friend of Bill
ROBERTS.
