Market loses 'mayor'
By Randy RICHMOND, Free Press Reporter, Fri., September 15, 2006
The man considered the mayor of the Covent Garden Market -- and
the last to bear the name of London's most famous son -- has
died.
The death September 6 of Hubert
LOMBARDO, 96, marks the end of
an era in London for several reasons, those who knew him said
yesterday.
For many Londoners,
LOMBARDO was known as the cousin of famous
bandleader Guy
LOMBARDO and the holder of the rich family lore.
For many more, Hubert was the visible symbol of the deep roots
of this city's downtown farmer's market.
"He was almost the mayor of the market," said writer and friend
Herman GOODDEN.
As a little boy, the stories go, Hubert
LOMBARDO walked each
day with his mother to the market for groceries.
He became a familiar sight, pulling his little red wagon, filled
with produce, to the family home near the Labatt brewery.
So it went until he married teacher Jean
NORTON in 1964, at age
54. His late-in-life marriage was due to the fact he had looked
after his elderly mother for years, visiting her every day,
GOODDEN
said.
"Hubert had a shy soul and a really good heart."
After that,
LOMBARDO and his wife made daily trips to the market,
shopping for food and then stopping for coffee and conversation.
The two were chosen to cut the special pasta ribbon to open the
new market October 21, 1999, signalling the start of the downtown
revitalization.
Almost every day since, the elderly couple came in, Hubert in
a suit and Jean, who still lives in London, dressed in finery,
said Ian GREASLEY, owner of Bloomers flower shop.
"This was his spot. The two of them always looked like a couple
in love. They always had that smile."
Christmas was a big deal to the couple and they made sure everyone
celebrated,
GOODDEN said.
"He had a really booming voice. The floorboards rumbled when
he talked. He got so excited sometimes, he would get ahead of
himself.
"Whenever he was talking to one of my brothers, he would just
say, 'DaveTedBobSteve,' said
GOODDEN, whose real name is Steve.
(Herman was a nickname given him as a child.)
LOMBARDO was eight years younger than his famous cousin Guy,
who became the leader of the big band The Royal Canadians, starting
the worldwide singing of Auld Lang Syne at New Year's.
"He was really funny about Guy. He was really proud of Guy,"
GOODDEN said. But he didn't have his other brothers' passion
for music.
As members of the family passed away, Hubert became tapped more
and more to help the Lombardo Music Centre and now-defunct Royal
Canadian Big Band Music Festival.
"He was very supportive of the festival," said co-founder Tyrone
TRAHER. "He had a great knowledge of Guy
LOMBARDO and was a very
good source of factual information."
There are no other family members with the
LOMBARDO name left
in London, said Doug
FLOOD, longtime supporter of the Lombardo
Music Centre.
"It's the end of that generation," he said.

OSBORNE,
Jean
Winnifred
(EDWARDS)
Jean Winnifred
(EDWARDS)
OSBORNE passed away on January 1, 2006
in Grey Bruce Health Centre, Markdale, after a brief but courageous
battle with cancer.
Jean was born August 29, 1929 to Bert and Emily
EDWARDS, who
had just immigrated from England to Canada, finally landing in
Dundalk. Jean grew up in Dundalk. She was an excellent student
and athlete and graduated at a very young age. Then Jean went
to work at the Bank of Commerce (C.I.B.C.) in Dundalk.
She met and married her life partner, Dallas
OSBORNE, in June
1949, a marriage that lasted over 50 years. Through the years
Jean and Dallas raised their four children, Lynda, Steve, Doug
and Shelly, while Jean continued to work at the bank. Jean was
a kind and caring mother as well as grandmother and then great-grandmother.
Nothing to do with family or at her work was too much for her
to handle. She enjoyed the many family get-togethers at the cottage
at Wasaga Beach.
On January 31, 1987, Jean officially retired after 32 faithful
years at the bank. She had many, many Friends in the community.
Later, Jean and Dallas left Dundalk and moved to Barrie for a
few short years, then they both retired to Brewsters Lake, Singhampton.
After the passing of Dallas, Jean moved to Markdale. She enjoyed
her time there, and met many new Friends.
Through the years Jean and Dallas attended services at Erskine
Presbyterian Church, Mount Pleasant Missionary Church, and then
later Jean attended as many services as she could at the Eugenia
United Church.
Left to mourn Jean are her four children, Lynda (Hans)
MUELLER,
Steve (Brenda)
OSBORNE, Doug (Delores)
OSBORNE, and Shelly
LAMBERT,
ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also brothers,
Jack (Mary)
EDWARDS and Peter (Elske)
EDWARDS, as well as sisters-in-law
Donna WILLIAMS and Marie (Barry)
ADAM/ADAMS.
Funeral services were held at the McMillan Jack Funeral Home
on Wednesday, January 4.
Patrick HALFERTY,
Jean's friend and pastor for some years ably
conducted the service that would have pleased Jean very much.
Her daughter Lynda played the hymn "Hope" on the piano during
the service.
The pallbearers were Chris
OSBORNE,
Gene
MATTHEWS (grand_sons,)
Doug OSBORNE,
Cameron
EDWARDS, Darryl
GREEN (nephews,) and Hans
MUELLER (son-in-law.) Flowerbearers were grandchildren, interment
was held in Dundalk Cemetery following the service. A lovely
luncheon was served to family and Friends at the Erskine Presbyterian
Church by their ladies group.
The family once again, appreciated everyone's kind words, prayers
and support during this difficult time. Mother is and will be
truly missed by her family and Friends.

people to liven up their cooking with spices and seasonings.
She felt that her encouragement made people more adventurous
and contributed to the improvement of Canadian cuisine. She was
also known as 'Mavis Trill' in an advice column she wrote for
bird lovers. When she retired, the company newsletter described
her as a 'Ray of Sunshine'. It said, 'What's important is the
professional career and the accomplishments that this sweetheart

still making mud pies in her sandbox and the women's movement
ended at the Parent-Teacher Association refreshment table.' As
it said, 'Jean was a charmer.' She was known for her outrageous

She had many happy times as a member of the Women's Advertising
Club of Toronto, of which she was the President from 1962-63.
She was proud of her service in the Canadian Women's Army Corp

GREEN,
Kathy▼ "
Kati▼" (née
KATZ)
By Bonnie GOLDBERG and Adam
ABRAMSON,
Page
A20
Wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, cook. Born December 11,
1925, in Romania. Died April 20 in Toronto, of heart failure,
aged 80.
Kati KATZ was a young girl growing up in Romania with her parents,
baby sister, and two brothers, when the family was tragically
ripped apart by the Holocaust. Of the
KATZ family, only 16-year-old
Kati and her older brother Karchi survived.
But along came Kati's prince. After serving in the Czechoslovakian
army, Jimmy was busy feeding the survivors of the war. As the
story goes, Kati did not have any shoes, so he bought her a pair.
They soon were married, beginning an enduring 61-year love affair.
Kati was a resilient woman. She carried her infant daughter on
her body, across the ravaged terrain of Europe to get to a displaced
persons camp in Naples, Italy, from where they boarded a ship
to Canada. At the Canadian border, Imre, Kati and Marika
GRUEN
became Jimmy, Kathy and Mary
GREEN.
With no English, no prospects
and few contacts, they settled in Toronto. The Fifties were tough
as Jimmy and Kathy struggled to build a life in downtown Toronto,
working hard as dressmakers. In 1958, Kathy gave birth to her
son Sidney, named for Kathy's late father.
The Sixties were a time of prosperity and happiness. Jimmy's
new waste-disposal business was thriving and they had many Friends.
Kathy was reunited with her brother Karchi when he and his wife
Rosi emigrated to Canada in 1966. The year before Karchi came,
Mary got married. Fred spent many nights at the dinner table
in Kathy's house, being urged by his mother-in-law to eat more
vegetables.
Kathy became a grandmother at the young age of 44 in 1969. She
immediately became "chief" caregiver to her two grandchildren,
Bonnie and Jay. Kathy's son Sidney, 12 years younger than Mary,
could always be counted on to entertain his young niece and nephew.
Life was good. Her loving relationship with Jimmy was the envy
of their Friends. She fed him chocolate cake for breakfast, cooked
his borscht the way he liked it, and taught him the fine art
of vacuuming. Kathy was a patient mother, active grandmother
and an effortless cook. Her family craved the delicacy simply
called "Bubby's chicken," the paprikash and goulash that tasted
like the old country, and her near-medicinal chicken soup. When
Sidney married in 1982, Kathy developed a remarkably close relationship
with her daughter-in-law, Simmy. When their kids (Justin, Dylan
and Taryn) were born, Kathy and Jimmy basked in this new generation,
defined by winters at the Florida condo and regular Friday-night
dinners at The Pickle Barrel.
But then came a more difficult phase of life. Jimmy took care
of Kathy as her health failed. Just as she did as a teenager
in Auschwitz, Kathy fought hard and had many miraculous recoveries
from several serious ailments. Through it all, Kathy and Jimmy
never missed an episode of The Young and the Restless.
Kathy had much joy through her pain, celebrating the birth of
her four great-grandchildren, Arly, Ethan, Coby and Remy. She
described each one as the most beautiful child born on this Earth.
And as long as they had eaten, she was happy.
Kathy rallied in early April to attend the Passover Seder at
her daughter Mary's house. She died just over a week later. Kathy
rarely sat down to the meals she cooked for her family. She hovered,
making sure their plates were full. This can be equated with
her inability to exhale until her children were cared for, with
her inability to relax until she knew those close to her were
safe. Kathy has now finally exhaled: she knows her family is
safe.
Bonnie is Kathy
GREEN's oldest grandchild. Adam is Bonnie's husband.

LEATHER,
Mary (née
GREEN)
Passed away peacefully at the Lodge at Broadmead on April 14,
2006. Predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Jack, on January 7,
2006. Mary is survived by and will be greatly missed by her sons
John and Ronnie, daughter Nancy, son-in-law Jim, daughter-in-law
Nadine, grand_sons Johnny, Jamie, Jason and Jonathan (Lori), sisters-in-law
Josephine and Alice, cousins, nieces and nephews in Toronto as
well as Friends in both the east and the west. Born in Toronto
on June 16, 1917, Mary lived and worked in Toronto until her
retirement at the end of the '70s. Mary also served in the Womens
Army Corp during World War 2, hoping to meet up with 'her' Jack
who was already serving overseas. After retirement, Mary and
Jack moved first to Campbellford, Ontario and in 1981 Mary and
Jack headed west to the Sidney and Victoria areas to be closer
to the 'kids'. For those fortunate enough to have known Mary
before the sands of time took their toll, Mary will be remembered
for her love of art, music, her quick wit and honesty; always
a willing shoulder to lean on and a ready ear at the end of the
line. Mary took people as she found them and understood at an
early age the true meaning of the word equality long before the
politically correct joined the cause. While Mary celebrated our
similarities, Mary understood and appreciated that our differences
only made the world a more interesting place in which to live.
The road in Mary's life was not always easy, however, Mary faced
life's many challenges head on and although Jack was the driver,
Mary provided direction and while Jack could be a boat at sea,
Mary was the anchor. Mary was often heard to say 'we are only
passing through'. God Bless dear sweet Mary, mother and friend,
on the next part of your journey. May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon
your face, And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow
of His hand. Thank you to all the caring staff at the Lodge at
Broadmead particularly the nursing staff on B3 Lodge. There will
be no service by request. Donations can be made to the Lodge
at Broadmead Foundation, if so desired.
