GOUDREY o@ca.on.york_county.toronto.globe_and_mail 2006-11-10 published
GOUDREY,
Gordon
Kenneth
(November 11, 1923-November 3, 2006)
Economist, diplomat, academic, raconteur, father, grandfather,
great-grandfather and friend passed away in White Rock, British
Columbia on November 3rd after a year long battle with cancer.
He was predeceased earlier this year by his wife of 56 years,
Shirley GOUNDREY (née
MANNING.)
His first wife, Violet (née
MEREDITH,)
died in 1993. He is survived by his son, Ken, of Nantwich, England,
(Joanne), and by his son John (Daphne) and daughter Jane (John)
of White Rock, by grandchildren Jackie, Anthony, Steven, Wendy,
Leila, Liam, Amy, and Joanna, and by great-grandchildren Joseph,
Alexander, Jack, and Isaac; as well as by his siblings Irving,
Pat, Mae and Pearl. Gordon was born in Cranbrook, British Columbia
to John and Melba
GOUNDREY, homesteaders and farmers in Etzikom,
Alberta. In his early teens, the family moved to Mission, British
Columbia and it was during his school years there that his interest
in broader horizons and his commitment to the principles for
which he stood first took root. To the end of his life he maintained
a special place in his heart for his Japanese Canadian Friends
and took pride in the relationship he had with them before and
during World War 2, and beyond. It was during his formative years
too that the staggeringly powerful memory which enabled him to
excel academically; to effortlessly recall names, faces, places
and events also became apparent. Disparate information such as
the surplus in the Ontario provincial budget in 1951 (and how
he enabled the Minister of Finance deal with it), the difference
in gauge between Chinese and North American railways, (and how
he helped African countries receiving financial aid in the sixties
tackle this problem), were all retained in amazing detail. Gordon's
phenomenal power of recall was invaluable to him in his brilliant
career as an international economist, fed countless dinner party
reminiscences, stunned listeners as he led them through every
club used in a round of golf, and continued in his retirement
with his ability to recount who had just held each card in a
hand of bridge. Gordon was only seventeen in 1940 when he lied
about his age and joined the Royal Canadian Artillery. While
in England he met his first wife, Violet. Their son Ken was born
in 1945. Gordon participated in the invasion of Normandy and
was mentioned in Military Despatches for distinguished service
in the same year. At the end of the war Gordon returned to Canada
where he studied economics at University of British Columbia.
Here he met his second wife, Shirley. He moved on to post-graduate
studies at the University of Toronto, (where he was also goalie
and manager for the University of Toronto hockey team), and then
became a lecturer. His academic career also took him to McMaster
University in Hamilton, the University of Alberta in Edmonton,
and Memorial University in Saint_John's, where he became the first
Professor of Economics in 1953, subsequently returning as Chair
of the Department in 1971. Over the years Gordon acted as an
economic advisor both to the Ontario and Newfoundland governments,
assisted in several Royal Commissions and finally chaired a Royal
Commission on Mineral Taxation in 1971. It was in Newfoundland
that Gordon acquired not only his children by his second marriage,
but also an interest in development economics. From that point
on, his academic career alternated with working on the ground
to improve the lives of people in developing countries. This
started with appointments to the governments of Sri Lanka (Ceylon
at the time) and as economic advisor to President Kenneth Kaunda
of Zambia during its independence in 1963-64; and continued with
the United Nations in New York and the Commonwealth Secretariat
in London, England. In all he led approximately 120 missions
to Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Pacific. These included
negotiating on behalf of Papua New Guinea against multinational
mining conglomerates, and dealing with the financial aspects
of refugee crises in Somalia, Mozambique and elsewhere. In the
context of his work internationally, Gordon had a special love
of Africa and a true respect for many of its early leaders. Over
the years he became personally acquainted with many Heads of
State, such as Julius Nyerere of Tanzania and Seretse Khama of
Botswana, and at one time he was so heavily involved in southern
Africa that the website of Foreign Affairs Canada lists him as
a 'Professor of Border Closures'. Gordon designed and headed
the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Assistance during his second
appointment with the Commonwealth Secretariat in the seventies,
finally retiring in 1982 as Assistant Secretary General for Special
Political Questions at the United Nations. At the time, the highest
position occupied by a Canadian at the United Nations. His work
internationally was recognized in 1981 when he received an honorary
Doctor of Laws from Carleton University. Five years after their
move to Nanaimo, his wife, Shirley, suffered a debilitating car
accident and, for the remainder of her life, Gordon devoted himself
lovingly and tirelessly to her care. They moved first to Chilliwack,
and then for the last 16 years of his life to White Rock, where
he continued his life-long passion for golf, renewed his interest
in bridge, and watched his grandchildren grow up. We will miss
those dinner party reminiscences but will continue to benefit
for the rest of our lives from a life which was grounded at all
times in principle, intellectual honesty, and a deep compassion.

GOULD,
Glenn
Herbert, 1982 -- Died This Day
Concert pianist and recording artist born in Toronto on September
Born Glen GOLD, his Protestant family changed the name out of
concern that it might be mistaken as Jewish. His mother was his
first teacher, and he proved to be a prodigy, soloing with the
Toronto Symphony at 14. He quickly developed an interest in the
music of J.S. Bach and his 1955 recording of the composer's Goldberg
Variations won instant acclaim. In 1957, he set off to Moscow
to become the first North American musician to tour there since
the end of the Second World War. Eventually, he tired of public
life, avoided strangers and loathed being touched. In 1964, he
retired from the stage and turned to recording. He died of a
massive stroke due to complications from medication.
