Family shattered by crash
Joanna PILARINOS and her mother, Christine
FOSTER, were positive,
loving people, kin say.
By April KEMICK, Free Press Reporter, Tues., February 7, 2006
A Dorchester family is struggling to cope with an unthinkable
loss in the aftermath of a crash Sunday that killed a mother
and daughter.
Joanna PILARINOS, 16, and her mother, Christine
FOSTER, 45, died
Sunday afternoon when their van collided with a train in Thames
Centre.
PILARINOS, a beginner driver described as a "vibrant, popular"
teen, was behind the wheel when the van slid onto the snow-covered
tracks at Shaw Road north of Catherine Street.
The van was pushed more than 500 metres down the tracks by a
Via Rail train.
"We were all really tight," Spiro
PILARINOS said of his mother,
sister and stepfather, Carey
FOSTER.
"I feel so dislocated and lost," he said.
"I am going through every emotion possible."
The 29-year-old, who was visiting from Toronto for the weekend,
said his mom and sister were out shopping for school supplies
when the crash happened.
Yesterday would have been his sister's first day back in Grade
11 classes at Regina Mundi College after the exam period.
The "high-achieving, studious" teen wanted to have fresh supplies
to start the second term off right, Spiro
PILARINOS said.
"She always did really well in school," he said. "She got straight
As and she was very goal-oriented."
Ted GORSKI, principal at Regina Mundi, said yesterday was a sombre
day at the school.
"The teachers and students were just crushed by the news," he
said.
"Joanna was a beautiful girl with a beautiful personality," he
said, adding the school will hold a special mass today in her
honour.
The tall, athletic teen was an optimistic girl who loved to "see
possibilities in everything," her brother said.
"She was always looking for opportunities, for ways to make things
better," he said. "She was very passionate and caring."
Her positive attitude and determined character were traits she
shared with her mother, Christine, a Kellogg's employee for 25
years, he said.
Christine's supportive, accepting parenting style made it easy
for him and his sister to be close to their mom, Spiro
PILARINOS
said.
She was a good listener who made it known she loved her kids
no matter what, he said.
"My mother was so supportive," he said. "If we ever needed to
confide in anyone, she was always there. She was so accepting
and loving."
The two were both avid readers who liked to shop -- a pastime
they often shared, he said.
"They were very close," Spiro
PILARINOS said.
He said there's no one thing he'll miss most about his mom and
younger sister, whom he talked to almost daily from Toronto.
"I'm going to miss everything," he said. "There's no words to
describe how much I'm going to miss them."
