Market loses 'mayor'

The man considered the mayor of the Covent Garden Market -- and the last to bear the name of London's most famous son -- has died.
The death September 6 of Hubert LOMBARDO, 96, marks the end of an era in London for several reasons, those who knew him said yesterday.
For many Londoners, LOMBARDO was known as the cousin of famous bandleader Guy LOMBARDO and the holder of the rich family lore.
For many more, Hubert was the visible symbol of the deep roots of this city's downtown farmer's market.
"He was almost the mayor of the market," said writer and friend Herman GOODDEN.
As a little boy, the stories go, Hubert LOMBARDO walked each day with his mother to the market for groceries.
He became a familiar sight, pulling his little red wagon, filled with produce, to the family home near the Labatt brewery.
So it went until he married teacher Jean NORTON in 1964, at age 54. His late-in-life marriage was due to the fact he had looked after his elderly mother for years, visiting her every day, GOODDEN said.
"Hubert had a shy soul and a really good heart."
After that, LOMBARDO and his wife made daily trips to the market, shopping for food and then stopping for coffee and conversation.
The two were chosen to cut the special pasta ribbon to open the new market October 21, 1999, signalling the start of the downtown revitalization.
Almost every day since, the elderly couple came in, Hubert in a suit and Jean, who still lives in London, dressed in finery, said Ian GREASLEY, owner of Bloomers flower shop.
"This was his spot. The two of them always looked like a couple in love. They always had that smile."
Christmas was a big deal to the couple and they made sure everyone celebrated, GOODDEN said.
"He had a really booming voice. The floorboards rumbled when he talked. He got so excited sometimes, he would get ahead of himself.
"Whenever he was talking to one of my brothers, he would just say, 'DaveTedBobSteve,' said GOODDEN, whose real name is Steve. (Herman was a nickname given him as a child.)
LOMBARDO was eight years younger than his famous cousin Guy, who became the leader of the big band The Royal Canadians, starting the worldwide singing of Auld Lang Syne at New Year's.
"He was really funny about Guy. He was really proud of Guy," GOODDEN said. But he didn't have his other brothers' passion for music.
As members of the family passed away, Hubert became tapped more and more to help the Lombardo Music Centre and now-defunct Royal Canadian Big Band Music Festival.
"He was very supportive of the festival," said co-founder Tyrone TRAHER. "He had a great knowledge of Guy LOMBARDO and was a very good source of factual information."
There are no other family members with the LOMBARDO name left in London, said Doug FLOOD, longtime supporter of the Lombardo Music Centre.
"It's the end of that generation," he said.

Passed away unexpectedly at the Huronia District Hospital, Midland on Tuesday, January 31st, 2006, in his 89th year. Beloved husband of the late Isabelle GOODENOUGH. Loving father of Bruce, Marlene (Mardi) and Ned, Lillian and the late Glenn. Dear grandfather of Taylor, Dana, Adam, and Andrew. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Ray retired from a 37 year career as a Chief Aircraft Engineer with Air Canada. He lived a rich and full life involving family, Friends, travel, Bible study, and activities including lawn bowling, wilderness canoe tripping, and a host of other outdoor sports. His loving and cheerful nature will be sadly missed by his family and many Friends at home and around the world. Died peacefully at home, on July 13, in Montreal. Ruth Goldberg COHEN, his beloved wife of 57 years, was at his bedside. He was 92 years old. Edgar COHEN was born in Montreal on October 28, 1913. He was the son of Abraham Zebulon COHEN, a coal merchant and scion of the Jewish Montreal, and Malca (VINEBERG) COHEN, an erudite and witty conversationalist. He was the brother of Arthur, Riva and Elsa. He attended Roslyn School and Westmount High School. He went to McGill University and graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in 1934. Upon the sudden death of his father in 1937, he abandoned plans to study medicine and became president of L. Cohen and Sons Ltd., founded by his grandfather, Lazarus COHEN. There he introduced innovations such as profit-sharing and rebuilt a struggling business. He sold the company in 1959 and entered real estate as a consultant, running Yarco Building Corp. and LJA Investments; he successfully represented a consortium of investors in the United States and Western Canada. His real loves, though, were travel, writing and learning. After 13 trips to Europe and extensive archival research, he wrote Mademoiselle Libertine: A Portrait of Ninon de Lanclos, the 17th century French libertine. It was published in 1970 in Canada, the United States and Britain. He also wrote poems, limericks, short stories, commentary and satire, which appeared in publications including The Canadian Forum and The Montreal Star, as well as a novel and a memoir (unpublished). From 1977 to 1980 he was president of The Canadian PEN Centre. He was a member of the Board of Governors of Jewish General Hospital, a trustee of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim, chair of his McGill class reunion, and a member of the Friends of the McGill Library, the Writers Union of Canada and World Federalists. A student of history, biography and the Bible, he was a lover of opera and the outdoors, a sailor, a skier and tennis player, a wry and funny observer, a loving husband, an attentive father and unfailing friend. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, and his sister, Elsa RUBIN; his children Lenore, Judy and Andrew, and their spouses Paul HARRIS, Michael JACOBS and Mary GOODERHAM; and his grandchildren Michelle, Kenny and Andrew HARRIS, Jesse JACOBS, and Alexander and Rachel COHEN.

Oma Klees will be fondly remembered by her nine grandchildren, Saint Thomas Mayor Jeff KOHLER (wife Jennifer,) Randy KOHLER (wife Lucienda,) Rick KOHLER (wife Lisa,) Rosemary KOHLER, Irene BARWICK (husband Bill), Larry JANKOVIC (wife Heidi), Brian JANKOVIC (wife Michelle), Alissa KLEES and Robert KLEES. Fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild brought great joy to her life. Sadly missed grandfather of Allyson and Mark PEDWELL at home in Innisfil, Travis and Julie PEDWELL at home in Meaford, and Sean JOHNSTON and his wife Denise, and Cheryl JOHNSTON of Kitchener and great-grandfather of four. Dear brother of Russell PEDWELL of Newcastle, Helen YOUNGBLUT of Guelph, Maurice PEDWELL and his wife Marie also of Newcastle, and Keith PEDWELL and his wife Mary of St. Catharines. Predeceased by a sister Muriel RICKARD of Port Perry and a brother, Lloyd PEDWELL of Toronto, and survived by Lloyd's wife Norma and remembered as a special uncle by their families. Funeral services, officiated by Reverend Brian GOODINGS, will be conducted at the Ferguson Funeral Home, the Valley Chapel, 20 Alice Street East in Thornbury, on Wednesday June 7 2006 at 1: 30 p.m. Ken's family will receive Friends in the fellowship hall of Grace United Church following the interment and committal services at Thornbury-Clarksburg Union Cemetery. Dear father of Ralph and his wife Joyce of Clarksburg, Doris LECLAIR of Clarksburg, Lorna and her husband Ton VAN BERGEN of Toronto and Bob of Clarksburg. Fondly remembered by four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a brother Archie FISHER and sisters Doris COLYER and Anna KEATING. Predeceased also by a son-in-law Ray LECLAIR.
