SINCLAIR,
Margaret
The family of Margaret
SINCLAIR would like to express our heartfelt
appreciation for all the support we have received since the death
of our beloved mother. In her last few weeks we were overwhelmed
by the wonderful care given by the Parameds, the Victorian Order
of Nurses nurses and the tender assistance provided by Peggy
Luxton's staff of Caring Hands. We will always be grateful to
Dr. CHAN for the medical services he continued to provide for
our mother. The floral tributes, donations, cards, gifts of food
and other expressions of sympathy have been very comforting to
us throughout this difficult time. We were deeply touched by
the provision of a catered meal in our home courtesy of the culinary
talents of Ruth
BUTLER, May
HOWES, Tina
WATSON and Ben
WILTON.
Thank you to Rob Fawcett and his excellent team for their attention
to every detail. We could not have asked for more consideration
on our behalf. A special thank you to the staff at Hair Fair
for styling mom's hair exactly as she would have liked, complete
with the little net. Mother always wished her service to be conducted
from Gentle Shepherd Church and her wish was granted with special
gifts of beauty. We thank Pastor Ann
GILLIES for her thoughtful
message and her kind words of comfort, her son, Matthew, for
his mastery of the sound system and the lovely harmony of Dianne
CARLSON,
Judy
MacNEILL and Irene
LITTLE, skillfully accompanied
by Heather
WIGHT.
Krista
BULLOCK's piano solo was a special tribute
to her great-grandmother. We extend sincere appreciation to the
Gentle Shepherd Women, under the capable coordination of Joan
McGEE, for providing such a delicious lunch. Reverend
PRINCE's visit
to our home on Christmas Eve day will always be a treasured memory.
Perhaps the best way we can thank this community in its entirety,
is through Mom's own words which we recently discovered in a
written message to her family, "God bless you all".
-The SINCLAIR

GILLIN,
Leslie
Edwin
By Jan BULEY,
Page
A16
Husband, father, Scrabble and piano player, bird lover. Born
November 5, 1922, in Brantford, Ontario Died February 9 at the
family cottage in Point Clark, Ontario, of natural causes, aged
Ed GILLIN grew up on a farm in Brantford, Ontario In 1946, he
married Dorothy
WILKINS (or "Wilk" as she is affectionately called,)
and in the same year, Ed graduated from the University of Guelph
as a proud "Aggie." Children appeared like dandelions along the
laneway -- Kim, Kathy, Bill, Jan, and Kent. There were numerous
busy diaper pails and many other child-rearing challenges.
Ed became very involved with tomato research for Campbell Soup
Co. (where he worked for a remarkable 43 years) but eventually
landed a much-loved position as the poultry purchasing agent
for Campbell's in Listowel, Ontario
Ed had ceaseless energy. He sang in church choirs, served on
Scouting committees, won and lost at Scrabble games, assisted
with school projects, signed hundreds of report cards, barbecued
with flair, played the organ, piano and banjo-uke, completely
overhauled the family cottage, brewed award-winning beer, entertained
countless Friends, composed hundreds of birthday poems and songs
that paid homage to his beloved family and numerous Friends.
Ed travelled through this busy world with the love of his life,
Wilk.
After his retirement from Campbell's, time again marched on at
an even faster and more fascinating pace. Wilk and Ed moved to
live permanently at the family cottage at Point Clark, where
gardening, golf, theatre and a whole new set of adventures awaited
them.
Never was there any thought of a vegetable garden when five hungry
children were growing up in Listowel, but retirement seemed to
kindle a long-lost yearning for soil experimentation and seed
germination with Ed. With his University of Guelph background,
Ed's gusto for gardening was untamable! He was wildly enthusiastic
about his bumper crop of "Early Girl" tomatoes (there were thousands
of them) and eloquently ecstatic about the boxes and baskets
of onions, squash, carrots, radishes, beets, and Swiss chard
that he harvested each summer. He took great delight in sharing
his crop with neighbours and family and absolutely nothing was
wasted.
One Saturday afternoon, Ed constructed a compost container that
was the size of a small tool shed. Legend has it he had been
nicknamed "Troll" for his tenacious determination to never throw
anything away; he also maintained a lengthy list of incredible
inventions and contraptions -- some of which even prevented the
squirrels from dining too heartily at Wilk's bird-feeders. A nature-lover
since he was small, Ed was the creator and custodian of approximately
300 bluebird houses. He never lost his devotion to birds. There
are hundreds of birdhouses he mounted on fence-posts bordering
Bruce County side-roads near Kincardine and Ripley, Ontario
Our father died in February, just as the male cardinal was arriving
for its early lunch at one of the many birdfeeders Ed had made.
And most of our immediate family was present when Ed breathed
his final breath. It was an incredibly powerful moment and something
we felt so privileged to witness. And Joan, one of the people
who came to take my father's body away to be cremated after he
died, uttered a transforming comment, the kind that one never
forgets: "You should know that it's a rare and beautiful thing
when children are present to witness the last breath of a parent
who witnessed your first."
We stood at the window and watched the flash of red feathers
at the birdfeeder. It's one of those things that stays with you.
Jan is one of the five
GILLIN children. She wrote this on behalf
of her siblings.
