Woman injured in fire dies
Debbie ROBERTS, 50, is remembered as a caring mother and friend and a tireless worker.
By Patrick MALONEY, Free Press Reporter, Fri., May 26, 2006
The woman rescued by London firefighters from a townhouse blaze has died, her family said yesterday.
Debbie ROBERTS, 50, who was rescued without vital signs from the fire Wednesday in her Arbour Glen Crescent home, but then resuscitated, died in hospital yesterday, her daughter said.
"She was a mother of three, she was kind to animals, she loved her family and her Friends," Shelley WULF, 27, said emotionally from her Virginia home.
ROBERTS lived with her common-law husband, identified by Friends and family as Paul MOOD, in the townhouse at 99 Arbour Glen Cres.
Police at first said he suffered minor injuries, then listed him in critical condition. But his condition wasn't known last night.
Sparkles, the London cleaning service where ROBERTS had worked the last six or seven years, has established a bank account to collect donations. The money is for expenses related to ROBERTS, not her husband, said manager Tammy FERGUSON.
"(Our boss) just wants to be able to do something for them," FERGUSON said. "We just don't want (WULF) to have to worry financially."
ROBERTS' family is facing financial struggles that may keep the three children from travelling to London, she said.
FERGUSON recalled ROBERTS as a tireless worker and friendly colleague.
"Every day, whether she felt good or not, she was here," FERGUSON said. "She was a back-breaker, seriously. She didn't take any time off, she couldn't afford to."
The cause of the fire was still unknown as the Ontario Fire Marshal continued investigating yesterday.
Police offered no new details.
It was about 2 a.m. Wednesday when tenants in the townhouse complex which has about 18 units -- awoke to the rumbling of fire trucks. The fire gutted two townhouses, including ROBERTS'.
A report in yesterday's Free Press indicating units 99 and 100 were gutted was incorrect, one tenant said yesterday, noting they were 99 and 98.
Beyond some smoke damage, the fire was kept from spreading throughout the complex, owned by London radio personality Steve GARRISON.

Always the caregiver, that attitude remained with her even as she became a patient herself. During her illness, Nicolette's many Friends and family lent a helping hand with home duties and driving to medical appointments. She had a gift for Friendship which was returned in abundance. The family would like to thank all of those Friends who were always there when needed. Special thanks to Doctors V. CELLARIUS and J. ARVANITIS of Mt. Sinai Hospital, and staff of the Community Care Access Centre who provided the excellent care which permitted her to stay at home for a long time. A heart felt thank you to Doctor Ellen WARNER of Sunnybrook Hospital for years of compassionate care. Thank you to Doctor HAQ and staff of the Medical Day Care Unit and the staff of the Palliative Care Unit of Saint Michael's Hospital who so ably provided compassionate care in the final stages of her illness. Overpass leap kills mother, son
Andrea JOHNSON, 30, of Toronto died along with her two-year-old infant.
By Canadian Press, Tues., December 5, 2006
Toronto -- Toronto police have identified the mother and small boy who died in a murder-suicide after plunging off a Highway 401 overpass.
The woman is Andrea JOHNSON, 30, of Toronto and her son is two-year-old Sulla GENUA.
Police confirmed that it was a murder-suicide and said a family member contacted them yesterday afternoon.
Post-mortems concluded JOHNSON died of multiple trauma after being struck by a number of cars, while a blow to the head killed the toddler.
Shocked police officers found the bodies in the westbound collector lanes in east-end Toronto at about 7: 15 p.m. Sunday.
JOHNSON was pronounced dead at the scene.
Paramedics struggled to revive Sulla, but he was pronounced dead en route to hospital.
The public manner in which the two died is rare, said University of Toronto criminology professor Rosemary GARTNER.
"Women will typically suffocate, drown their children or perhaps jump off a height, but typically not in a way that would injure other people," GARTNER said.
"This case is unusual in that sense."
While murder-suicide cases involving mothers and infants are often the result of post-partum depression, GARTNER said the majority of cases actually involve older children.
Mothers, however, typically do have a history of mental illness, she said.
"I would estimate in at least 75 per cent of women who kill their children and kill themselves -- easily over 75 per cent -- there is either a history of psychiatric treatment, hospitalization, or strong evidence of severe depression or personality disorder or psychosis," she said.

FICK, Ruth Anna (formerly POWERS, née WOOLL)
Died peacefully in her 92nd year after losing a fight with pneumonia in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Ruth was born in Saginaw, Michigan, to the late John Oliver WOOLL and the former Edith Eliza BAILEY. Ruth attended Saginaw High and continued her education with secretarial studies. She met a young Canadian Evangelist, the Reverend George Max POWERS, senior. They fell in love, were married, moved to Sarnia, had four daughters and later moved to Walsingham where George pastored the Free Methodist church; there they had a son. George died of cancer in 1947 and Ruth continued as a lay pastor in Walsingham for the next three years. In 1951 Ruth was again in love and married William Ernest FICK, senior, of Marston. The family moved to a farm at R.R.#3, Tillsonburg where Ruth had another son. Ruth had a full life, raising a family, farming, playing an active role in the Cornell Women's Institute, and for many years holding positions of service at the Tillsonburg Free Methodist church: youth leader, Sunday school teacher, pianist, organist and board secretary. Ernest died in 1990 and in 1993 Ruth moved to the senior apartments at 31 Maple Lane, Tillsonburg, where she met many new Friends. In 2005 she moved to the F.J. Davey Home in Sault Ste. Marie, where she quickly adapted, again making more new Friends and enjoying delicious meals. Until contracting pneumonia, she remained mentally active, e-mailing and chatting online, and hearing, for the first time, a live performance of Handel's Messiah - a special treat was arriving early, catching the end of rehearsal and hearing her favourite song, the Hallelujah Chorus, twice. It is common to hear her Friends and family say they valued her Friendship and prayer support. Her passing is their loss, not hers. She will be deeply missed. Ruth was the dear mother and mother-in-law of Lois STOVER; Tillsonburg; Geraldine POWERS (deceased 2001;) Edith GARWOOD (deceased 1999,) Don (Pat) GARWOOD, Uruguay; Ruth (Joseph) INFURNARI, Dunnville; George POWERS (deceased 1995,) Linda MAE- POWERS, Haliburton; and William (Carol) FICK, Sault Ste. Marie. Ruth had 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She prayed for them all daily. Ruth was predeceased by one sister and four brothers. Ruth is resting at Verhoeve Funeral Home, 262 Broadway, Tillsonburg, Ontario (519-842-4238) where service will be held in the chapel on Saturday, January 21st, 2006 at 1: 30 p.m. by Reverend Douglas J. DAWSON of the Free Methodist Church, Tillsonburg. Interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Walsingham, Ontario.
