Man charged with murder
Hamilton man charged, Ottawa man dies after incident in Collingwood

Collingwood - An Ottawa man is dead and a Hamilton man faces charges after police were called to an Elm Street home Sunday morning.
Collingwood Ontario Provincial Police and emergency response officials were called to the house at 7: 30 a.m.
The victim, identified as Stephen LONG, was taken to Collingwood's General and Marine Hospital and later transferred to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, where he died at 11: 19 a.m.
Collingwood Ontario Provincial Police arrested Christopher Michael BROUGHTON, 27, a short distance from the Elm Street house. The Hamilton resident faces charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder, Const. Tim GARLAND said Monday afternoon. He is scheduled to appear in Collingwood court April 25.
It was unknown Monday whether the men knew each other or what they were doing in Collingwood.
The cause of death was not being released pending the completion of a post-mortem Monday afternoon.
It's the second serious incident in Collingwood in a week. Last weekend an unidentified Wasaga Beach man was found beaten on Hurontario Street in the early morning hours. The Ontario Provincial Police has released little information in that case and no suspects have been identified.
Elm street remained cordoned off Monday morning as the investigation continued.
"It's certainly disturbing," said Dana DOYLE, who lives two houses away from the murder scene. "It's certainly sad that it happened, but (media) are trying to link it to the beating last weekend. I think it's out of proportion for Collingwood."
DOYLE said he heard people speaking loudly in the back yard of the house early Sunday morning when he took his dog out.
"I couldn't make out anything. They weren't arguing or anything like that."
DOYLE said he was unfamiliar with the people who owned the house.
"I don't know how long they've lived there. Maybe a year or two. I think there's a grandmother, a mother and two children who are in their 20s."
There was a party at the house Saturday night, but DOYLE said he didn't hear any noise from it.
"I don't know who was at the party."
The investigation has been turned over to the Ontario Provincial Police Criminal Investigations Branch under Det. Insp. Bernie MURPHY.

In his 78th year. John passed away August 31, 2006 at Hernando-Pasco Hospice in Brooksville, Florida after a long battle with cancer. His loving family was by his side. He worked for Canadian Pacific Rail for a number of years and retired from Kellogg's after 27 years of service. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards and visiting with family and Friends. He is survived by his wife Elsie of Brooksville, Florida, daughter Debbie (Bruce) ELLISON, Saint Marys, stepdaughter Karen (Ted) FIRNSTEIN of Springhill, Florida and stepson Thomas (Sue) MENTRAK of Kingston, Ontario. Three special granddaughters Melissa NOXELL (Don), Tammy NOXELL (Bryce), Tara GARLAND (Chris) and four great grandchildren, Brittany, Alexandra, Brayden and Colby. One sister-in-law Ruth DUNLAP. Cousins, Sandra (John) NOVACK and Marilyn DUNLAP. He will also be missed by nine step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren. John was predeceased by his first wife Marion in 1988. Five brothers Arnie, Malcolm, Dwayne, Gerald and Edward. His father, Harry and mother, Myrtle. Cremation has taken place in Florida. A graveside service is to be held in London at the Grove Cemetery on Huron Street, Saturday, September 30, 2006 at 11: 00 a.m. for family and Friends.

Died peacefully April 17, 2006 in her 90th year. Daughter of the late Ervin H.A. WATSON and Florence Michie WATSON (née FULTON) predeceased by brothers Robert F. WATSON and Donald S.F. WATSON, sisters Elizabeth COOK and Mary Helen WATSON, and son Gordon GARLAND. Doris was raised in Toronto (Islington,) but was a small town Ontario girl at heart. Grandma Dode had a way with children. A devoted teacher, she began her teaching career in 1949, a career which had stops in Trout Creek, South River, Kenora/Keewatin, Cannington and finally Midland. "Grandma-Grandma" loved the freedom of cruising in her car, and enthusiastically drove her red Firebird Trans-Am until June, 2005. She will be missed by sons J. David GARLAND and Michie T. GARLAND, and his wife Janet WILSON; grandchildren Christina, Charles, Martine and Hilarie; great grandchildren Jacob and Sarah; and sister-in-law Stella WATSON. With love around her, died in Cambridge, Ontario, on September 8th, after a lengthy illness that she bore with her natural buoyancy of spirit and determination. She participated in life with true enjoyment to the very end. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, trained at the Royal Conservatory Opera School 1952-55, Patricia's versatile career as a contralto soloist included a long association with the Canadian Opera Company and numerous guest artist performances across Canada and abroad. By far her greatest achievement and pleasure was in interpreting contemporary music and she presented the Canadian and world premieres of over 100 compositions. Her decision to live, perform and teach in Canada contributed immensely to music in this country. Her love of musical performance was balanced by zestful exploration of other cultures, outdoor sports and recreation, and a love of good food shared by a wide, loving circle of Friends, colleagues, students and family. Patricia will be greatly missed by her loving husband, Leonard, his sons Jake and Ric, her surviving brother Kenneth and his wife Nancy, sister-in-laws Mary RIDEOUT, Ursula DISSMANN, and Eudice GARMAISE, as well as her devoted nieces and nephews, and their families.
