his beloved Prince Edward Island until failing health in 2002
prevented his yearly pilgrimage "down home". Aside from his beloved
birthplace Murray had a passion for horse racing and hockey,
a true Maple Leaf fan his entire life. As a husband he was thoughtful
and considerate, as a father he was loving and patient, as a
papa he was proud and beyond overjoyed, as a friend he was dependable
and kind hearted, and as a human being he was sweet and good
natured. Murray was not a distinguished or refined man by birth,
profession or status. Yet he was and is held in the highest regard
by all who knew him, as a person who valued his family, valued
doing the right things and would lend a helping hand quietly
and unassumingly when needed. A thank you to Comcare for their

Thomas Stayner recipient loses battle with cancer
Grace FORD remembered by family, Friends at funeral Tuesday
By Michael
GENNINGS,
Page 1
Grace FORD, the winner of last year's Thomas Stayner Award, died
on Saturday.
She was 87.
Daughter-in-law Tish
FORD told The Sun on Monday that
FORD died
of liver, lung and bone cancer. She was diagnosed in early December
and subsequently moved to Stayner Nursing Home, where she passed
away on the weekend.
The award she received at last year's Stayner Chamber of Commerce
Business Awards ceremony was special to her, her daughter-in-law
said.
"She had that on her television in the nursing home so she could
see it. She was so incredibly honoured by it," Tish
FORD said.
The Thomas Stayner Award is a citizen of the year-type award
created by the Chamber four years ago.
FORD told people at the ceremony it was nice to receive the award,
but quickly added there were a number of others just as deserving.
Judges selected
FORD based on a 14-year commitment to the Stayner
Public Library Board.
Many other things she was involved with helped her win as well.
FORD was a volunteer driver for the Children's Aid Society, ferrying
wards to appointments and did work through United Church Women.
"Her enthusiasm toward her town and its heritage is unending,
and she is an individual who possesses a very strong community
spirit and has definitely made a difference to Stayner and the
lives of its citizens,"
FORD's daughter-in-law wrote when nominating
her last year.
She recounted Monday that her mother-in-law was "a very caring
and outspoken person. No one pulled the wool over Grace's eyes.
If she had something to say she said it. You always knew where
you stood."
Grace FORD was born and raised in Stayner. She attended Byng
Public School and subsequently Stayner Continuation School.
Her parents were Vern and Eva
JOHNSON.
FORD's dad was a tailor,
who had a business where R.C. Robinson Mens Wear is now located
on Main Street.
Growing up and as a young woman
FORD loved to play sports.
"She played hockey, baseball, whatever was going back then she
enjoyed it," Tish
FORD said.
Helen HANNA, 87,
FORD's best friend, recalled the first time
they met.
"We've been Friends for over 75 years. They'd moved to a new
house on John Street and I'd heard there were two little kids
there. So I lived on John Street too and I went up the walk and
there she was standing out front,"
HANNA said.
Growing up the two played sports together and as adults were
often in each others company,
HANNA said, adding she was a bridesmaid
in FORD's wedding.
FORD lived most of her life in Clearview Township, except for
a few brief stints, including one when she worked building airplanes
for the deHavilland Aircraft Company in Toronto during the Second
World War.
"She was always very good with her hands. It was not uncommon
for her to fix things at my place," her friend said.
She married her husband Fred shortly after the war ended and
the couple lived on a farm at Sunnidale Corners for 20-plus years,
until moving back to town. The Stayner home was the one
FORD
grew up in as a little girl,
HANNA said.
"She loved Stayner too -- it was her favourite place. She was
a big believer in buying locally, which I guess stems from when
her dad was in business."
HANNA noted her friend was also a good mother. She raised two
boys, Tom and John.
"She also cherished every moment with her great-grandchildren
and grandchildren," Tish
FORD said.
In terms of entertainment she loved to play cards, although
HANNA
said she thinks
FORD enjoyed the social aspect more than the
game itself.
Reading was another favourite thing, her daughter-in-law said.
FORD was a big diary writer as well and kept one since she was
a youngster.
HANNA said she will miss her friend dearly.
Yesterday afternoon, a funeral service for
FORD was held at the
Carruthers and Davidson Funeral Home on Main Street.
FORD was
buried at Stayner Union Cemetery.
The▼ family said that donations in memory of
FORD can be made
to the Centennial United Church Building Repair Fund, Box 385,
Stayner, L0M 1S0.

WAY,
Peggy (née
FORD)
Died suddenly but peacefully March 1, 2006 at Northumberland
Hills Hospital, Cobourg, Ontario. Peggy is survived by her loving
son Graham
ABRAHAM from her first marriage in 1946 to Lieutenant
Colonel Reg
ABRAHAM (d. 1962,) her daughter-in-law Wenda
THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON
and her two grand_sons Damian and Tristan
ABRAHAM.
She also leaves
two step-daughters from her second marriage in 1966 to Colonel
Gordon WAY (d. 1998,) Elizabeth
MUNDELL and Margaret
PAULISSEN,
and two grandchildren Trevor and Wendy
PAULISSEN.
Peggy was born,
the youngest of six children, in Wood Green, North London, England
in 1915. During World War 2 she worked in The City of London
during the day and every night as a volunteer fire watcher on
the roofs of the bomb ravaged buildings of that city during the
Blitz. (Probably as a result of this, there were few things that
would subsequently faze her!) After the war, she moved to Canada
with her first husband and fell in love with the country soon
becoming a citizen while still managing to remain to all appearances
quintessentially English. On the death of her husband and a brief
stay back in her homeland, she returned to live in Ottawa with
her second husband where they remained until his death in 1998.
Peggy loved the outdoors and exercise. In fact, one of her greatest
regrets was having to slow down when she broke her hip, at the
age of 80, as a result of falling off her ten-speed bike while
on vacation in Florida. After moving from Toronto, the last three
years of her life were spent with Graham and Wenda, along with
her two beloved cats Ben and Belle, in Port Hope, Ontario a town
that she loved. Peggy survived most of her generation but she
will be sorely missed by the generations that have followed.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Allison Funeral Home,
www.allisonfuneralhome.com 103 Mill Street North, Port Hope,
Ontario, Sunday at 2: 30 p.m. Sleep well Mum.

Doug FORD, 73: Athlete, business leader, member of provincial
parliament
Started company from scratch
Put community and family first
By John GODDARD,
Staff
Reporter
Doug FORD, the rags-to-riches entrepreneur and member for Etobicoke-Humber
in the first Mike Harris government, has died of colon cancer
at 73.
Mr. FORD was elected to the Ontario legislature in 1995 and served
one term, until 1999, as a backbencher and member of the standing
committee on finance and economic affairs.
He grew up "rough and tumble on the Danforth," in the words of
his son Rob
FORD, a sitting Toronto councillor.
"He was a baby out of 10 kids," Rob said yesterday. "He never
had a father, just a mother. He never met his father."
With little money in the large family, the senior Mr.
FORD left
school after Grade 3 and for a time continued to struggle, even
as an adult.
"Until the business took off, we were poor," his son said.
Doug FORD was also an avid athlete. He played guard for the East
York Argos, and, in 1954, he attempted unsuccessfully to swim
Lake
Ontario alongside Marilyn
BELL, who famously completed the
first crossing.
"He never got across but he sure made a good attempt," Rob
FORD
said.
In 1962, he founded a company now known as Deco Labels and Tags,
developing the firm into a multi-million-dollar concern with
more than 100 employees and manufacturing facilities in Toronto
and Chicago.
In 1995, during his election campaign, he said he had "run a
company for 34 years, and we don't owe a cent and have never
taken a dime in government grants.
"I believe my expertise can be useful to remedy (the province's)
financial situation," he said.
Mr. FORD was an active member of the Rotary Club for 38 years.
He was a long-time board member of the Etobicoke General Hospital
and once raised $1.5 million for the hospital's first Computed
Tomography scan machine.
He also volunteered for the Salvation Army Red Shield Campaign
and Big Brothers.
"As a father, he was my best friend," said his city councillor
son. "He taught me the value of a dollar. and hellip; He listened to everyone's
perspective and their different views."
Mr. FORD was diagnosed on July 1, Canada Day, and died Friday,
September 22, with his family at his side. He leaves his wife,
Diane, daughter, Kathy, and sons, Randy, Doug Jr. and Rob, three
daughters-in-law and eight grandchildren.
Visitation is tomorrow and Thursday at Newediuk Funeral Home,
2104 Kipling Ave., between 2 and 4, and 6 and 9 p.m. A funeral
service is to be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Westway United
Church, 8 Templar Dr.
