Dr. R.▼ Neil▼ LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY, noted consultant to the pool industry in Canada and the United States, passed suddenly Tuesday, March 28, 2006. The Newmarket, Ontario, resident had just returned home from a day-long session at a Toronto hotel teaching water chemistry to pool operators when he collapsed. He was 67. At the time of his death, Doctor LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY was serving as principal-in-charge of Lowry and Associates, a nationwide distributor of specialty chemicals which has exclusive representation of Taylor Technologies' water-testing products in Canada; owner and chief educator for the Lowry School of Pool and Spa Chemistry; and a contributing writer and commentator for numerous trade publications, most notably Pool and Spa Marketing magazine. He was an active member of the Pool and Hot Tub Council of Canada and the only Canadian voting member of the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals' Recreational Water Quality Committee whose water quality guidelines are followed by public pools and spas throughout North and South America. He also served as an advisor to the board of directors of the Professional Pool Operators of America. Doctor LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY's ability to make a complicated subject understandable for the average person was coupled with an enthusiasm for his subject matter that most people could not resist, and this made him a sought-after public speaker. Most recently he took part in a panel discussion on preventing recreational water illnesses at the 26th annual Canadian Pool and Spa Conference in Toronto.▼ Said▼ Richard▼ HUBBARD, the Markham, Ontario-based publisher of Pool and Spa Marketing, 'Neil was one of the pool industry's finest and most respected educators, and one of its greatest Friends. He was passionately devoted to elevating the understanding of water chemistry among aquatic facility managers, public health inspectors, and pool builders, service companies, and pool supplies retailers. He always said, 'Over ninety percent of pool problems are caused by poor water chemistry.' Without him, the level of discourse in our industry will be diminished.' His influence on Canada's $1.2-billion-a-year pool and spa industry is pervasive. Dr. LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY contributed to the present regulations for public spas under the auspices of the Ontario Ministry of Health. He also designed the model labels for pool products regulated under the federal Pest Control Products Act. He was the original author of 'Pool and Spa Chemistry: A Testing and Treatment Guide,' widely regarded as the Bible of water quality management. Over the course of 26 years, thousands across Canada became certified pool water technicians by his pool school.
Robert Neil LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY was born in Windsor, Ontario, to Mac and Marjorie LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY and was a loving big brother to David Kent LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY and Lynda Jane PARKER. He earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the University of Western Ontario in nearby London; a doctorate in inorganic chemistry from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; and a master's in business administration from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. But Neil LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY was no ivory tower academic. He spent the early part of this career with three Canadian chemical companies: first in pool chemical sales at Kert Chemical Industries, Inc., then as pool chemical products manager at Swan Recreational Products Limited, and finally as technical services director for Mursatt Chemicals Limited. He established Lowry and Associates in 1985 with his wife Gabriele as his business partner. Lowry and Associates became the master distributor for Taylor Technologies in Canada in 1989, but the two firms' relationship goes back even further. 'Neil and I worked together for 26 years,' said a saddened Paul WOODEN, president of Taylor. 'He was more than a trusted business associate. He was a good friend to me, and to many others at Taylor. He was an incredibly smart man and so funny! We loved spending time with Neil at the end of a long day at a trade show; he kept us in stitches with his jokes and parlor tricks. His sudden passing has left us all numb with grief.' One of his Friends at Taylor was marketing Vice-President Patricia FITZGERALD. 'Dr. LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY had a fierce intellect and a blunt manner of speaking that took some getting used to. He was an avid reader, a student of history, and always up on current events. In a debate of any kind he took no prisoners. But if he had the roar of a lion, he also had the heart,' FITZGERALD reminisced. 'I will miss him greatly.' He met Gabriele ADELMANN in Boston, Masssachusetts, and the pair married shortly thereafter in July 1972. While growing their business together they also grew a family, producing sons Michael and Derek, now ages 30 and 28 respectively, and daughter Sarah, age 17. He was a devoted husband and father. When Mackenzie, 3, Andrew, 18 months, and Erik, 1 month, were born to Michael and his wife Jennifer, the grandchildren became his pride and joy. Derek LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY and his spouse Sheila STARRETT are both involved in running Lowry and Associates; Michael LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY too is following in his father's footsteps by being a part of the industry. 'We all have not only lost a loving husband, father and grandfather we have also lost our very best friend.' MORRISON, Hugh Whitney, B.A. (Alta,) B.A. (Hons) M.A. (Oxon)
Peacefully, in his 99th year, May 23, 2006, at the Aurora Retirement Centre, Aurora, Ontario. Hugh had an extraordinary and very full life. Born May 15, 1908 in Vegreville, Alberta, he earned his B.A. (Hons.) (language and literature) at the University of Alberta, Edmonton and was named a Rhodes Scholar in 1930. At his Oxford College, Merton, he read literature and political theory from 1930 to 1932, with post-graduate studies in 1933. After serving as a reporter at the Toronto Star and editor of the Star Weekly from 1934 to 1937, Hugh was appointed the first Director of Talks and Public Affairs at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, serving in Ottawa and Toronto from 1937 to 1943. Thereafter, he worked as Assistant to the President of a Central and South American airline out of New York until 1947. While in that position, he was recruited to assist 'Intrepid', Canada's spy master Sir William STEPHENSON, by reporting wartime activities of German agents in Central and South America. (In Hugh's library is a copy of A Man Called Intrepid by Stephenson dedicated 'To Hugh, my comrade in arms'.) From 1946 to 1948 he was a partner in a public relations firm in New York. Then he rejoined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in its 'Overseas ShortWave Broadcasting Service' in Montreal as its first Director for Latin America. He returned to Toronto in 1952 as the first Director of Public Relations for the United Way, serving until 1972. On retirement, he developed a diploma course in Public Relations at Humber College and taught there until 1983. Always a keen scholar of English literature, particularly Shakespeare, Hugh wrote Shakespeare, his Daughters and his Tempest, published in 1963. He also wrote Oxford Today and the Canadian Rhodes Scholarships, published in 1958. Hugh was the oldest surviving Canadian Rhodes Scholar. Unfortunately, his autobiography remains unfinished. While at Oxford Hugh played hockey for the Spengler (European) Cup-winning Oxford teams in 1931 and 1932. Recently, he was invited to Oxford for a reunion of Oxford hockey teams and presented with a replica of his playing jersey. Hugh outlived three wives (Florentine St. Clair SHERMAN, Patricia LeMoine FITZGERALD, daughter of the artist, and Marita LAFLÈCHE) and one companion, Mary-Lucile Getchell FRENCH, called 'Ceeley', with whom he was reunited after an interval of 62 years they had met while he was at Oxford and she was in Paris on her 'junior year abroad' from Smith College. Hugh is survived by his loving granddaughter Elizabeth St. Clair Morrison FIELD (Adam CHRISTIAN) of Buffalo, N.Y. daughter of his only child, Hugh., Peter St. Clair who died in 1998, and his nephew Hugh John BOLTON of Edmonton. Hugh's extensive library was donated in lots over many years to the University of Alberta and his Oxford College, with assistance from his long-time friend, book dealer David MASON of Toronto. His extensive Shakespearean studies collection was gratefully accepted in 2004 by doctoral candidates in the University of Toronto's English Department. His extensive memorabilia, including transcripts of wartime and other Canadian Broadcasting Corporation shows Hugh produced, has been gratefully accepted by Library and Archives Canada (finding aid No. 2283). Edward Ullyot (Ted) FITZGERALD beloved husband of Florence of Calgary, passed away on Friday, November 3, 2006 at the age of 84 years. Ted was born on December 18, 1921 in Parry Sound, Ontario. He grew up in Timmons, Ontario and served with the Royal Canadian Air Force and Royal Air Force during World War 2, flying Spit Fire planes. Ted married Florence on December 19, 1947. He later began working in the Forest Industry in Northern Ontario and continued this for many years. In 1993, Ted and Florence moved west to live in Okotoks, and later settled in High River and Calgary. Ted was an avid curler in his younger years and always enjoyed playing a hand of bridge. Besides his loving wife Florence, Ted is survived by his children, Debbie KALLIO of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Doug (Joyce) FITZGERALD of Cayley, Alberta and Donna (Rene) VANDENBRAND of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was the eldest daughter in the Elgin County farming family of the late William and Eva BLEWITT, and the beloved wife of city trainman and musician, the late W. Jack GRAVES of Saint Thomas. She was a nursing graduate of the Saint Thomas Memorial Hospital Class of 1944. Winnie enjoyed the love and admiration of her brothers and sisters and their families, as they celebrated their milestones with brunches in the London - Saint Thomas area. After a heroic struggle with pneumonia, Janet FITZGERALD died at Scarborough Grace Hospital on February 11, 2006, age 87. Predeceased by her husband Dr. John D.L. FITZGERALD, brother David GRUBBE and sister Kay OUCHTERLONY, Janet leaves her three children, Shelagh FITZGERALD, James FITZGERALD (partner Katy PETRE) and Michael FITZGERALD. Extended family include nephew Dr. David OUCHTERLONY (Donna;) nephew Tom OUCHTERLONY (Mary;) niece Jane CRAIG (Jim;) nephew Patrick WHITLEY (Sally;) niece Anna WHITLEY (partner Fred BLAIR;) and grand-nieces and nephews Janet and Geordy OUCHTERLONY, Gordon and Cathy CRAIG, Amy and Andrew OUCHTERLONY, and Shelagh, Caitlin and Christopher WHITLEY. A special thanks to Dr. GROSSMAN and the palliative nursing staff at Scarborough Grace Hospital. Peacefully, at Toronto East General Hospital, March 13, 2006. Eldest son of Austin and Mary FITZGERALD. Predeceased by brothers Joseph, Francis, Redmond, sister Agnes and her husband William STEFFLER. Survived by brothers Gerard, Vincent, sister Alice and her husband Vincent HEFFERNAN, as well as dear sisters-in-law Rita, Leverne, Ferne and Audrey. Many nieces and nephews mourn his loss, too. Born at Lakefield, Ontario, April 21, 1914, he was educated in both elementary and secondary schools in Norwood, Ontario. He joined the Christian Brothers in 1940. Teaching assignments began in Toronto and included appointments in Windsor, Oshawa and Montreal. Most of his retirement years were spent on the West Indian Island of St. Vincent, as librarian at Saint Martin's Secondary School. The Brothers will welcome Friends and relatives at La Salle Manor, 61 Fairfax Crescent, Scarborough, on Wednesday from 2: 00-5:00 p.m. and at the Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Resurrection will take place on Thursday at 11: 00 a.m. in the Manor Chapel. Noted consultant to the pool industry in Canada and the United States, passed suddenly Tuesday, March 28, 2006. The Newmarket, Ontario resident had just returned home from a day long session at a Toronto hotel teaching water chemistry to pool operators when he collapsed. He was 67. At the time of his death, Doctor LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY was serving as principal-in-charge of Lowry and Associates, a nationwide distributor of specialty chemicals which has exclusive representation of Taylor Technologies' water-testing products in Canada; owner and chief educator for the Lowry School of Pool and Spa Chemistry and a contributing writer and commentator for numerous trade publications, most notably Pool and Spa Marketing magazine. He was an active member of the Pool and Hot Tub Council of Canada and the only Canadian voting member of the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals' Recreational Water Quality Committee whose water quality guidelines are followed by public pools and spas throughout North and South America. He also served as an advisor to the board of directors of the Professional Pool Operators of America. Doctor LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY's ability to make a complicated subject understandable for the average person was coupled with an enthusiasm for his subject matter that most people could not resist, and this made him a sought-after public speaker. Most recently he took part in a panel discussion on preventing recreational water illnesses at the 26th annual Canadian Pool and Spa Conference in Toronto.▲ Said▲ Richard▲ HUBBARD, the Markham, Ontario-based publisher of Pool and Spa Marketing, "Neil was one of the pool industry's finest and most respected educators, and one of its greatest Friends. He was passionately devoted to elevating the understanding of water chemistry among aquatic facility managers, public health inspectors, and pool builders, service companies, and pool supplies retailers. He always said, 'Over ninety percent of pool problems are caused by poor water chemistry.' Without him, the level of discourse in our industry will be diminished." His influence on Canada's $1.2-billion-a-year pool and spa industry is pervasive. Dr. LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY contributed to the present regulations for public spas under the auspices of the Ontario Ministry of Health. He also designed the model labels for pool products regulated under the federal Pest Control Products Act. He was the original author of "Pool and Spa Chemistry: A Testing and Treatment Guide," widely regarded as the Bible of water quality management. Over the course of 26 years, thousands across Canada became certified pool water technicians by his pool school. Robert Neil LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY was born in Windsor, Ontario, to Mac and Marjorie LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY and was a loving big brother to David Kent LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY and Lynda Jane PARKER. He earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the University of Western Ontario in nearby London; a doctorate in inorganic chemistry from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; and a master's in business administration from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. But Neil LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY was no ivory tower academic. He spent the early part of this career with three Canadian chemical companies: first in pool chemical sales at Kert Chemical Industries, Inc., then as pool chemical products manager at Swan Recreational Products Limited, and finally as technical services director for Mursatt Chemicals Limited. He established Lowry and Associates in 1985 with his wife Gabriele as his business partner. Lowry and Associates became the master distributor for Taylor Technologies in Canada in 1989, but the two firms' relationship goes back even further. "Neil and I worked together for 26 years," said a saddened Paul WOODEN, president of Taylor. "He was more than a trusted business associate. He was a good friend to me, and to many others at Taylor. He was an incredibly smart man and so funny! We loved spending time with Neil at the end of a long day at a trade show; he kept us in stitches with his jokes and parlor tricks. His sudden passing has left us all numb with grief." One of his Friends at Taylor was marketing Vice-President Patricia FITZGERALD. " Dr. LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY had a fierce intellect and a blunt manner of speaking that took some getting used to. He was an avid reader, a student of history, and always up on current events. In a debate of any kind he took no prisoners. But if he had the roar of a lion, he also had the heart," FITZGERALD reminisced. "I will miss him greatly." He met Gabriele ADELMANN in Boston, Masssachusetts, and the pair married shortly thereafter in July 1972. While growing their business together they also grew a family, producing sons Michael and Derek, now ages 30 and 28 respectively, and daughter Sarah, age 17. He was a devoted husband and father. When Mackenzie, 3, Andrew, 18 months, and Erik, 1 month, were born to Michael and his wife Jennifer, the grandchildren became his pride and joy. Derek LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY and his spouse Sheila STARRETT are both involved in running Lowry and Associates; Michael LOWERY/LOWREY/LOWRIE/LOWRY too is following in his father's footsteps by being a part of the industry. "We all have not only lost a loving husband, father and grandfather we have also lost our very best friend."
