AYEARST,
Mary
Elizabeth (née
HECKMAN)
73, of London (formerly of Saint Thomas) died at peace in the arms
of her daughter on Thursday, March 9, of multiple myeloma. Born
in Orange, California, she moved in infancy to Saskatchewan with
her family after a frightening earthquake in California. Eventually
they settled in Fingal, when her father joined the Canadian Air
Force during the war. Mom had an independent and adventurous
spirit and instilled the best of those qualities in her three
children. She not only gave us our wings, but the courage to
fly. A softie who carried spiders outside to freedom and couldn't
bear to trap a cottage mouse, she could also move Heaven and
Earth to stand up for her kids or the rights of others. Mom always
cheered for the underdog -- with the notable exception of favourite
golfer Tiger Woods -- and her great sense of style had her constantly
redecorating the homes of Friends and family. Her creative and
artistic talents found a natural outlet in pottery and works
from her studio adorn homes across Ontario, as gifts and through
sales at galleries and charity auctions. In later years she was
also a travel guide, escorting tours of the exotic and the mundane
and often accompanied by her dear sister June. She took groups
to Europe and the U.S. but also slogged through day trips to
baseball games and shopping malls. And, it remains a mystery
how well she could lead a trip to Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay
yet get hopelessly lost with her sister while driving to meet
family in Florida. She was never afraid to learn new things and
late in life became an Internet junkie, messaging family and
Friends around the globe with letters and photos. She even came
to own pirated music CDs, for an eclectic taste that ran from
Lyle Lovett to B.B. King. Mom treasured summers at her Bogie's
Beach cottage, especially the times watching her grandchildren
at play. They grew up there in the same carefree way that her
own kids did during their summers at her Mom and Dad's home in
Indiana -- with tons of adventure and smothered in love. Mom
was a stickler for loving us all equally, although in individual
ways matched to our personalities. (At Christmas, the value of
our presents would be exactly the same to the point of adding
a trinket or two to balance things.) She was extremely proud
of "how you kids turned out," as she would often say, pointing
to Steve and his wonderful family, her cherished relationship
with Liz and John's love sent continually from a thousand miles
away. Mary is survived by her three children John (Flor-Anne),
of Amethyst Harbour near Thunder Bay; Steve (Maura) and their
children Josh, Jordan and Danielle, of Barrie; and Liz
ROBB
(Ted,)
of London. Also surviving are brother Glen (Pete)
HECKMAN and
his wife Estella of Elkton, Florida; and several nieces, nephews
and cousins. Cherished friends and soul mates Naomi
GIBSON,
Audrey
THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON and Marianne
FISHER also survive. Predeceased by her
husband John (Pat) in 1982, parents Pete and Beryl
HECKMAN, sister
June FILLMORE in 2003 and brothers Robert and Jackie in infancy.
Cremation has taken place and
at Mom's request there will be
no funeral service. A visitation to celebrate Mary's life, will
be held Saturday, March 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Westview Funeral
Chapel, 709 Wonderland Rd. N., in London. Mom was very grateful
to Liz's employer, a registered charitable organization, for
allowing her the flexibility to address Mom's needs during the
lengthy illness. In recognition of that and in lieu of flowers,
we would be grateful for donations made to: Hutton House Foundation,
654 Wonderland Rd. North, London N6H 3E5. Tax receipts will be
issued. Aunt June will be waiting in Heaven to guide her on their
next adventure -- but first Mom will probably want to redecorate
the place. Rest in peace, dear heart.
