Passed away peacefully on Friday, January 13, 2006 at the age
of 76, at the Guelph General Hospital. Ann was daughter of the
late H.A. "Doc" and Bernice
OAKS
(FARLINGER.)
Raised in Port
Arthur, she was an excellent swimmer, active in many other sports
and fascinated by the natural world of Northern Ontario. Her
interest in nature drove her to become one of the first female
fire watchers, with her cousin Helen
SAINT_JOHN.
Her real focus,
during her time off from watching for fires, was gathering and
identifying local flora and fauna. Her wonder and curiosity was
always with her. This led to a Bachelor of Science degree at
the University of Toronto and a lifetime of pushing through barriers
society put between women and success in the sciences. She went
on to receive her M.Sc. and PhD from the University of Saskatchewan.
She visited the far north and was captivated by it, working for
a year in Churchill. Her widely respected research into how maize
seedlings grow, particularly focusing on the acquisition of nitrogen
and nitrate reductase, led her to conferences around the world.
She developed and cherished working relationships and Friendships
with scientists from India, Japan, North America and across Europe.
Her work not only pushed forward the understanding of the physiology
of plant growth but also helped to open doors for women who followed
in her footsteps. She received the Gold medal award from the
Canadian Society of Plant Physiologists and was a member of the
Royal Society of Canada. She retired as a Professor at McMaster
University for 24 years and then was an adjunct professor at
the University of Guelph for 10 years. She passed on her passion
for plant physiology and biochemistry to undergraduate and graduate
students, encouraging them to question and challenge ideas. Her
interests were widespread, from fighting against the untested
introduction of genetically modified crops with the Council of
Canadians to collecting Inuit art. In later years she would not
let the frailty of her body slow her down. She was recognized
by the McMaster University with an Honourary Doctorate and as
a Woman of Distinction for lifetime achievement by the Guelph
Young Women's Christian Association. Ann will be sadly missed
by her brothers Steve (Monique) of Ottawa, Tony and Rick (Barb)
of Toronto, her six cherished nieces and nephews; and seven great-nieces
and nephews, who fondly remember her as KoKosh. Many Friends,
from near and far, will also miss her lively discussions and
passionate concern for the environment and politics. The world
has lost another Lorax - another must spring from a stump to
replace her. A memorial will be held at a later date. Ann was
a supporter of many charities: if desired, make a donation to
the charity of your choice in memory of Ann. (Arrangements entrusted
to Wall-Custance Funeral Home and Chapel, 206 Norfolk Street, Guelph
