Night out with Friends has a tragic ending
By John HERBERT, Free Press Crime Reporter, Thurs., February
Matt BELL was a regular kid with a part-time job, potential as
a graphic artist, a good sense of humour and lots of good Friends.
The 19-year-old Fanshawe College student was coming home after
a night out with those Friends when he was struck and killed
by a car early Tuesday on Adelaide Street near his Hastings Drive
home.
Police said the driver left the scene, but contacted police a
short time later. No charges had been laid yesterday.
"He was a typical 19-year-old," said his mother, Irene. "He had
a girlfriend. He loved to go out. He loved people and everybody
loved Matt. He's going to be missed by so many people."
"He was better than most teenagers," said his grandmother, Julie
DEVRIES. "He was just a lovable kid who would hug his grandmother.
He was so proud of what he was doing at school. He was so good
at it."
BELL was was trying to cross Adelaide at about 1 a.m. -- he had
just hopped out of a taxi after clubbing with Friends downtown
when he was hit.
A graduate of Clarke Road secondary school,
BELL was in his second
year at Fanshawe College. He also worked at Staples Business
Depot on Richmond Street.
Irene BELL said her son's loss comes at a difficult time for
the family. Her husband, Thomas, died seven months ago.
Matt is survived by sister Nicole, 20, and brother Greg, 15.
"I'm in a fog," Irene
BELL said. "It comes in waves. It's busy
now with a lot of people around, but later it's going to be extremely
tough.
"It's still unbelievable. It's not real. He's not gone long enough
to know he's gone. It hasn't sunk it.
"How do you go on?"
Irene BELL said her son was "easy to love," which explains why
he had so many Friends.
One was his girlfriend, Jamie
DURSTON.
"He had lots and lots of Friends," she said. "He loved life."
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Forest
Lawn Memorial Chapel, 1997 Dundas St. E. Visitation is tomorrow
from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
