Elgin County woman dies as car drags her into pond
By Ryan CUREATZ, Free Press Reporter, Thurs., June 22, 2006
An Elgin County woman trying to rush fish into her backyard pond
died in a freak accident when her car dragged her into the water.
Cheryl DINKEL, 46, had been reported missing about 8 a.m. last
Friday. Her body and a 1996 Ford Taurus were later found by police
divers after West Lorne firefighters drained the pond.
Yesterday, her sister-in-law said
DINKEL was trying to get a
bucket filled with young perch into her own pond before they
died when the mishap occurred about 1 a.m. Friday.
Only hours earlier, on Thursday night,
DINKEL had caught the
fish on an outing to Port Glasgow with her best friend, her sister-in-law
said.
DINKEL was trying to dump the fish into her five-metre-deep pond,
when somehow her car lurched forward, pinning her inside and
taking her into the water where she drowned, she said.
"It was just a horrible accident," said Elgin Ontario Provincial
Police
Const.
Michelle
SCOTT.
Rather than park on the drive of her five-acre Graham Road property,
near West Lorne,
DINKEL drove close to the pond to unload the
fish.
DINKEL had a heart of gold and was known for her thoughtfulness
and generosity, her sister-in-law said.
"She was always helping everybody and never asked for anything
in return."
She is survived by her husband, Manfred, and children Gerald
and Samantha.
Passionate about caring for special needs children in the community,
DINKEL also liked to fish and enjoyed gardening, her sister-in-law
said.
She also had an outgoing personality, liked a joke and loved
to cook.
"If she knew you were coming to her house, there was a huge meal
waiting on the table," her sister-in-law said.
She cared for many animals at her home, including a dog, cats
and only weeks ago had found some baby rabbits she tried to nurse
to health.
"She couldn't leave them there, she was afraid they'd die," her
sister-in-law said.

Artist known for dog paintings
By Ryan CUREATZ, Free Press Reporter, Mon., July 10, 2006
London artist Catherine (Kit)
AZIZ linked her love of art and
animals to paint the pooches of world leaders.
Her pastel portraits of Canadian wartime prime minister Mackenzie
King's beloved Irish terrier, Pat I, and
of U.S. wartime president
Franklin
D.
Roosevelt's Scottish terrier, Fala, earned
AZIZ acclaim
at an early age, her niece said.
"She wanted a dog so badly when she was a child," Susan
MASCIOTRA
said.
"She started painting pictures of them."
Born in Saint Thomas,
AZIZ lived in London most of her life before
she died June 22 of cancer at 89,
MASCIOTRA said.
AZIZ was a commercial artist who met with King in 1948 in Ottawa
to give the prime minister a painting of his pooch, the first
of three terriers he owned -- all named Pat -- and about whom
he wrote in his diary almost every day the dog lived.
King, a devotee of the spiritual world, who held seances to contact
the dead, including his mother, to confirm his instincts, once
wrote that he believed Pat had been sent by his mother to offer
him peace and comfort.
On the same trip
AZIZ made to Ottawa to meet King, she gave a
painting of Muldoon the Second, a Great Dane, to its owners --
Lord Alexander of Tunis, Canada's governor-general at the time,
and his wife Lady Margaret.
"They loved their pets and
(AZIZ) was aware of that,"
MASCIOTRA
said. "She just presented herself to these people with the utmost
grace."
When AZIZ handed Roosevelt's widow, Eleanor, the portrait of
Fala at F.D.R.'s memorial library in Hyde Park, New York the
same year, Fala licked the artist's hand.
"There were a lot of admirers of her work,"
MASCIOTRA said.
In other portraits of celebrity dogs,
AZIZ depicted a border
collie used by the U.S. army's K-9 Corps to send messages during
the Second World War.
A German shepherd that worked as a seeing-eye dog and a perennial
dog-show champion, the Great Dane Rudiki, were also captured
in AZIZ's lifelike works crafted from photographs.
"She was just an incredible person who enjoyed all aspects of
the visual arts," said her cousin, Philip
AZIZ, also a prominent
London artist.
Catherine AZIZ loved the opera and enjoyed dancing her fingers
along piano and organ keys,
MASCIOTRA said.
"(She was) just a fun-loving person when she socialized."
AZIZ once confessed she'd like to have a Kerry Blue terrier.
But her quiet, private life came with no children or dogs of
her own, MASCIOTRA said.
"I don't want to become merely an imitator of someone who is
recognized as a great artist,"
AZIZ told The Free Press 60 years
ago.
"I want to be original, if I can, and I can achieve originality,
I feel, only by working by myself."

Canadian Press journalist covered Churchill and Eisenhower
Canadian Press, Page S11
Toronto -- Journalist Rod
CURRIE always lured his readers in
with some intriguing oddity, followed it up with a series of
snappy quotes and fascinating facts, then finished up with a
satisfying ending.
The appearance of the Currie byline on Canadian Press wire stories
came to an end on Tuesday, when the long-time reporter for the
news agency died from pneumonia following a lengthy illness.
He was 77.
Mr. CURRIE started in the Halifax bureau as an 18-year-old office
assistant and, with no formal training, worked his way through
many of the most prominent journalism jobs at Canadian Press.
In all, he was based in eight cities -- including New York and
London twice, as well as Washington -- over a 47-year career.
After Mr. CURRIE retired, in 1994, his byline continued to run
on the wire from more exotic locales, as he switched his efforts
to travel writing.
He had an impressive career that included covering the funeral
of Dwight Eisenhower. In London, where Canadian Press's office
was just off Fleet Street during the 1960s, Mr.
CURRIE covered
royal weddings (he actually met the Queen later in Ottawa) and
Winston Churchill's funeral.
"It was so spectacular," he recalled years later. "It was really
theatre…. People were out on Fleet Street with these gun carriages
and these huge black horses, practising at 2 o'clock in the morning
the day before." Mr.
CURRIE returned to Canada in 1976 to serve
as an assistant bureau chief in Ottawa -- his only job at Canadian
Press that did not involve writing. In 1982, Mr.
CURRIE made
his last move, to Toronto, to become entertainment editor and
later an arts writer.
"He was such a natural writer that most of his copy flowed easily,
but it was his opening paragraphs that usually grabbed me," said
Peter Buckley, a former colleague. "He just lured the reader
into the story. It wasn't flashy. It was plain good writing,
put together by someone with unusual talent."
