CHRISTMAS,
Olive
May (née
LYSTER)
(October 8, 1921 To November 10, 2006)
Olive was born near Cabri, Saskatchewan, the fourth child of
Joseph and Susan
LYSTER.
While still an infant Olive's family moved
to Empress, Alberta, where her father was employed by the C.P.R.
She. received all her formal education through the Empress schools.
Extracurricular activities included C.G.I.T., tap-dancing, badminton,
softball, and wiener roasts on the banks of the Red Deer River.
On a Sunday in May, 1940, she accompanied her father to the service
in Saint Mary's Church where the congregation would welcome their
new minister, recently-ordained and youthful, Hugh
CHRISTMAS.
Although she always denied it, there are others who are certain
they heard her whisper to her father that after the service he
should invite the new minister home for a cup of tea. Whatever,
thus began a 66-year long love affair. The regulations of the
church made it impossible for Hugh to be married until he was
24-years of age and ordained to the Priesthood. So, after an
interminable period of being 'the preacher's girlfriend', on
October 19, 1942, Olive and Hugh stood in Saint Mary's Church, Empress,
and exchanged their marriage vows. Subsequently, the couple lived
in and served the following Saskatchewan communities: Alsask,
Milden, Wolseley, and Estevan. James was born while they were
still in Alsask; David, in Wolseley; and Janice, in Estevan.
In 1954, Hugh was recruited into the Royal Canadian Air Force
as a Chaplain. His first 'posting' was to Summerside, Prince
Edward Island. where the girl from the prairies was introduced
to lobsters and other Maritime experiences. Subsequent 'postings'
were to Winnipeg, Calgary, Toronto, and Moose Jaw. By this time,
Hugh had been promoted to the rank of Lt. Col., and was sent
to Lahr, W. Germany, as Senior Chaplain in Europe. This development
made it possible for Olive to accompany him on many trips - Sardinia,
to American bases in Ramstein, and Brunnsum in Holland, to conferences
in Rome and Paris, and to Prague, Czechoslovakia (behind the
Iron Curtain). On holidays, they visited Hugh's parents in England,
and visited his birthplace. Of course, none of these places could
be reached without passing through London, and Olive reveled
in the shopping and the live theatre. 1972 brought them back
to Training Command H.Q. in Winnipeg, and a year later Hugh was
'honourably discharged on account of age', and they were 'retired'.
Where to live? Years before, by mutual agreement, they had selected
Calgary as 'the only place we chose to live'. So, after a brief
spell as Rector of The Church of the Good Shepherd, Hugh was
persuaded to work for the D.V.A. as Chaplain in the Col. Belcher
Veterans' Hospital. And there Olive really found the opportunity
to give expression to her abilities as a Volunteer Care-Giver.
(After the death of her little daughter, Susan, Olive worked
out her grief and loss by working as a Nursing Aide, first in
the Elm Tree Nursing Home in Toronto, and then in Central Park
Lodge, in Moose Jaw.) Not only on Sunday mornings rushing wheel-chairs
to the Hospital Chapel, but on any day of the week you would
find her up on the wards. Sometimes just quietly holding a shaky
hand, sometimes chatting about 'old times', reading or writing
a letter. On several occasions Olive was instrumental in linking
veterans with long lost relatives. In all things she was like
a big sister to 'her boys'. And this caring concern carried on
into the move into the 'new Belcher'. On at least one occasion
Olive was a nominee for Care-Giver of the Year. There are people
throughout Alberta and British Columbia who will always link
her name with the Calgary Children's Milk Fund. Through the 1990's
she collected and counted literally hundreds of thousands of
creamer tops and brand labels and logos from 1- and 2-litre milk
containers. Hers was truly a life full of love - for her husband,
her children, and her neighbours. To Maxine Johnston and the
exceptional team of care-givers at the Brentwood Care Centre:
you have the heartfelt gratitude of this Christmas family. Olive
was predeceased by her parents, three siblings, her elder son
James, and her infant daughter Susan. She is survived by her
husband; daughter-in-law, Rose (Calgary); her son, David (Coleen)
recently moved to Calgary; and her daughter, Janice (David)
PAULSON,
of Pr. George, British Columbia; nine grandchildren: Heather
and Laura, of Calgary; Katherine (Dean)
FUSSEY, of Calgary; Daniel
(Crystal,) and James (Nicole) of Winnipeg; Eric (Lisa)
PAULSON,

CHRISTMAS, both of Winnipeg.
