CARTER, Linda Marie
In loving memory of Linda Marie CARTER, March 3rd, 1950-April 5th, In loving memory of Linda,
Dear companion who died 2 years ago today.
The moment that you died
Our hearts were split in two,
One side filled with memories,
The other died with you.
I think of you in silence,
I always speak your name,
For all I have are memories,
And your picture in a frame.
The years I had with you,
Are worth their weight in gold,
The joy and laughter you gave me,
Are mine to have and hold.
Remembering you is easy,
I do it every day,
But missing you is a heartache,
That never goes away.
I hold you within my heart,
And there you will remain,
To walk throughout my life,
Until we meet again.
Love you forever and deeply missed by Glen.

CARTER, Lyle
Lyle passed away on the morning of Saturday, February 18, 2006 at the age of 66 after a sudden and brief battle with cancer. He was a devoted father and grandfather, a passionate musician, lover of animals and reluctant advertising executive. He was a gentleman. During his entire life, Lyle found purpose and meaning in his music. He never abandoned his early love for jazz, classical and musical theatre. He played the saxophone beautifully. He also played clarinet and flute. He played with his eyes closed. He attended music school in Los Angeles after high school graduation and toured with 'The Royal Clefs' all over the West coast of the U.S. and Canada during the late 50's and early 60's. Though he eventually took up a successful career in advertising to support his young family, Lyle continued to play music in clubs and at home. In the 70's, Lyle wrote the score for a musical that was shown at Christ Church Cathedral in Vancouver. In the 80's, he hosted his own radio jazz show. Lyle then took up keyboards at the age of 45 and became a proficient pianist. Lyle had a beautiful golf swing and carried a single-digit handicap most of his life. He shared his love of hockey, stereo equipment and triple-O burgers with his son. He shared his love of books, willow trees, and pecan pie with his daughter. He never got bored of the Marx Brothers. The last ten years of Lyle's life were spent near his sister Shirley on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. There, Lyle devoted himself almost entirely to music; conducting a concert band, directing the Creek Big Band, performing at the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival, teaching, directing a production of the musical Oliver, and even writing a full-length musical which his children hope to bring to the stage one day. He changed from a sophisticated urbanite to a man who reveled in the ocean, eagles, and forests that surrounded him. Lyle's final years were also filled with wonderful moments spent with his young granddaughters, Anna and Sophie. He shared his love of music and his corny sense of humour… and he was captivated by every small detail of their lives. Grandpa's gentle, loving nature will live on with them. His son, Todd, and daughter, Laura, dearly miss their Dad's wisdom, dignity, compassion and unconditional love and support. Lyle was predeceased by his mother Sue, father Walter and sister Shirley. Please direct donations on Lyle's behalf to his memorial scholarship fund with the Sunshine Coast Community Orchestra Association, Box 1669, Sechelt, British Columbia V0N 3A0 Lyle had a lasting impact on many people throughout his life. If you have a memory or story to share, please email 'lauracarter@telus.net'.

CLARK, Mavis Audrey (née BAIN)
Passed away peacefully at Marion Hopsice Vancouver, British Columbia on Sunday, March 19, 2006. She was surrounded by those she loved dearly. She is survived by her brother Doctor Stanley BAIN from Ontario and her children John, Bruce, Jennifer and Christy. She is predeceased by their father, Jim CLARK. All of her grandchildren, Huxley and Eliot BENTZ, Hamish MARISSEN- CLARK and James CLARK will miss her generous, whimsical presence. She will also be sorely missed by her dearest friend Gerry CARTER, whose life she enlarged and enriched. Mavis was born on February 8, 1931 in Glasgow, Scotland where her dear parents Doctor Theodore and Audrey BAIN made their home for five years. Later she travelled Canada with her family, living in many communities including William Head, then a quarantine station, Rockcliffe Park, Ottawa and Vancouver. She graduated in Sciences from University of British Columbia in 1953 with a degree in home economics. This led to a short career as a dietician at the Royal Columbian Hospital in the early years of her marriage. Mavis made many life long Friends at University of British Columbia as a sorority girl in Alpha Gamma Delta. Mavis and Jim married in 1955. They raised their children in Burnaby where she made a significant contribution as a volunteer. She founded the first non-profit daycare in the city at Saint_John the Divine church. Mavis was justifiably proud of her role as co-founder of the Burnaby Family Life Institute, an organization dedicated to strengthening families - a cause to which she remained devoted. Mavis earned a graduate degree in human behaviour from Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington in 1980. She then established herself in practice as a marriage and family therapist in Vancouver. At the end of her career, she was honoured by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (British Columbia) for her role in helping to establish the profession in British Columbia. Mavis loved people. She loved listening and she loved talking. She was eloquent and true in her words and emotions. She was curious, intelligent and brimming with feeling. She was a free spirit. She painted, created and wrote. She pursued art studies for many years while she raised her four children. And she painted at her studio on Galiano every year until this one. Mavis and Jim bought their property on Galiano Island in 1969. After her children had grown, that property on the island's magnificent south end, became her home for many months of every year. Mavis developed a deep love of Galiano's natural beauty. She spent thousands of hours wandering its woods, swimming in its ocean and reflecting on nature's gift to us. She expressed her passion for the place through her work as a director of the Galiano Conservancy Association. Mavis fiercely defended the island from threats including development, pollution and non-native species. She will be lovingly remembered by many, many Friends on Galiano for her contributions as a member of that close knit community. A service to remember Mavis will be held at Christ Church Anglican Cathedral (690 Burrard St. Vancouver) on Friday, March 24 at 3 p.m. Another celebration of her life will be held on Galiano Island at a later date. Mavis would have been grateful if, instead of flowers, her Friends made a donation in her name to the Galiano Conservancy Association.

DOBBIN, Craig Laurence, O.C.
Craig Laurence DOBBIN, O.C., husband, father, grandfather, dear friend, entrepreneur, philanthropist, chairman, founder of the world's largest helicopter corporation and one of Newfoundland and Labrador's proudest sons. Surrounded by his beloved wife, confidante and best friend Elaine, his five children, and his brothers and sisters, at home looking out over the rugged Atlantic Ocean in Beachy Cove, Newfoundland, he presided gracefully and courageously over his final covenant and entered into the arms of the angels at age 71 on October 7, 2006. Craig DOBBIN was born in Saint_John's, Newfoundland on Friday, September 13, 1935, one of 11 children to Rita (POWER) and Patrick. He grew up on King's Bridge Road, a working class neighbourhood. He graduated from St. Bonaventure College in Saint_John's and went on to become one of the global aviation industry's most successful figures. He provided opportunity, support and inspiration to thousands through his businesses, his philanthropy and most importantly through his charming, larger than life, magnanimous character. A fearless buccaneer in the business world, Craig was guided by integrity, honesty and loyalty, and dove passionately into every task he undertook. He sprinkled his many speeches with concise, memorable axioms, including his three favorites: 'Never take no for an answer,' 'Turn adversity into opportunity,' and, his favorite in recent years, 'Time is the enemy.' From his base in Newfoundland, he founded Sealand Helicopters with one aircraft in 1977 and launched CHC Helicopter Corporation in 1987, building the enterprise into the largest helicopter services company in the world through timely acquisitions, strategic decisions and the support of many dedicated, loyal employees. He visited many of the 35 countries in which CHC operates, served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and later as Executive Chairman, and delivered his final speech to shareholders with his usual wit and charm, and to lengthy applause, on September 28, 2006 in Vancouver. Craig founded Omega Investments, a Newfoundland real estate company that, combined with his reputation and integrity, provided the leverage and collateral for many of his subsequent ventures. He founded Air Atlantic, a regional fixed-wing airline when the Open Skies Treaty was signed in 1989; created Vector Aerospace through a public offering; built Canadian Helicopters and created CHC Composites Limited. With every success, he was quick to point to his team, describing himself as a casting director rather than a master at business. He recognized talent and had a knack of making every individual feel important and his fellow employees were like family to him. Craig strongly believed in giving back to the community and did so with passion. In the giving of his time and talents, he never looked for recognition, but received it nevertheless for his outstanding generosity, support and encouragement. He was inducted as an Officer of the Order of Canada - which he considered to be his greatest honour he received honorary degrees from Memorial University of Newfoundland, the National University of Ireland and Saint Mary's University in Halifax. He was the Provincial and National Transportation Person of the Year; was awarded the Medaille de l'aeronatique from the Government of France established to reward the individuals who distinguished themselves in the development of aviation was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Business Hall of Fame; was Atlantic Canada's Entrepreneur of the Year and was voted Newfoundland and Labrador's Businessman of the Millennium. Just this past week, Craig received notification that he was to be inducted into Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame in June 2007 for his lifetime of work and achievement in the aviation industry. He was a fiercely proud Newfoundlander, a loyal Canadian and honoured citizen of the Republic of Ireland. Craig served as Honourary Consul General of Ireland for Newfoundland and Labrador and was Chairman of the Ireland-Canada University Foundation in Dublin. Equally at ease with presidents, princes and those less fortunate, he supported, sometimes anonymously, many causes. He endowed the Robert M. Kotloff/Nancy P. Blumenthal Professorship for Advanced Lung Disease at the University of Pennsylvania and served as Honourary Chairman and Patron for various non-profit organizations including the Lung Association of Newfoundland and Labrador; Newfoundland Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation The Janeway Children's Hospital Foundation; The Health Care Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador; Memorial University and others. He was named Outstanding Individual Philanthropist by the Canadian Society of Fundraising Executives. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by thousands. Leaving to mourn his wife, Elaine; daughters Joanne (Brian SEARS;) Carolyn; sons Mark (Sandra) Craig (Lisa); David (Penny); and their mother Eleanor. Step-children Kellee CARTER (Jason); Scott PARSONS (Karen); Robin PARSONS (Callie). Man killed during gunfight: Police
But uncertain if he was a shooter
Incident has 'some gang connection'
By Tracy HUFFMAN, Crime Reporter
Homicide detectives investigating a fatal shooting outside a North York apartment building believe the victim was struck during a gun battle, but they are unsure if he was a shooter.
Jermaine Lincoln BROWN, 22, was not armed when emergency crews arrived Monday night on Grandravine Dr. to find him suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
While police continue to comb through evidence and interview witnesses, Det. Sgt. Randy CARTER, the lead homicide officer on the case, said the shooting has "some gang connection to it."
"I haven't been able to determine… fully yet whether or not he was himself shooting or whether or not he was just there," CARTER said.
Gunshots erupted in the west parking lot and moved to the front of the building where BROWN, who was studying culinary arts at Humber College, was found on the ground.
"I've received tremendous help from the community and I need that to continue," CARTER said. In particular, police need help finding a silver or green sport utility vehicle similar to a GMC Yukon or Envoy that fled the scene, near Jane St. and Sheppard Ave. W. One suspect with a firearm got in the front passenger seat after the shooting, he said.
"I'm still trying to piece together how many people were there, who was at what location when the shots were being fired back and forth."
One firearm was recovered at the scene and is undergoing ballistics testing.
BROWN, from Brampton, had been staying at the apartment building since December. He had contact with police in the past, most recently in 2005, when he was charged with sexual assault. The case was still before the courts when he became the city's 15th homicide victim.
On Tuesday, BROWN's parents, Linda and Frank BROWN, said in an interview they were upset that their requests to view their son's body prior to an autopsy were refused. They said someone who falsely said she was BROWN's sister, and an ex-girlfriend, identified the body.
Toronto police spokesman Mark PUGASH said protocol dictates that once a body has been identified, it cannot be viewed again until an autopsy is done to prevent evidence tampering.
CARTER said he apologizes to the family for upsetting them.
"I had enough information to believe that they were related to the deceased and that they could identify the person."
