Killed 'over nothing'
Single father, 40, dies of gunshot wounds in a Saint Thomas pub
Saint Thomas -- One minute yesterday morning, Robert
THORPE
Jr.
was sitting in a downtown bar here with an acquaintance.
The next, he was dead of gunshot wounds and the man suspected
in his shooting was himself shot by police.
"It (the shooting) was over nothing," a grieving Carol
THORPE
said of the fatal shooting of her 40-year-old son, Robert, in
the Manx Arms Restaurant and Pub on Talbot Street, a lunchtime
hangout for the city's downtown business crowd.
Carol THORPE said her son, a single dad who lived for his nine-year-old
daughter, Hailey, was shot "six or seven times."
THORPE's shooting was the first homicide in Saint Thomas in 13
years.
Saint
Thomas police said yesterday
THORPE was shot just before
1 a.m. He was taken to hospital, where he died.
A man police say is a suspect, Nelson
MERRIT, 33, of 348 Wellington
Street, was shot and wounded minutes later by two Saint Thomas police
officers in a nearby parking lot. The province's Special Investigations
Unit is investigating
MERRIT's shooting, while Saint Thomas police
are in charge of the homicide probe.
Rose BLISS of Special Investigations Unit said two officers fired
at MERRIT, who was taken to hospital in London with non-life-
threatening injuries.
He has not been charged.
BLISS said last night
MERRIT would be turned over to Saint Thomas
police when released from hospital.
BLISS would not say how many
shots were fired by police or if the suspect exchanged gunfire
with the officers. She also would not say if a weapon was found.
THORPE was described by his mother as a "brilliant kid."
Carol THORPE said her son was a tool-and-die maker at the Timken
plant in Saint Thomas, where he had worked for more than 20 years.
She said he also had a boat in Port Stanley and loved fishing
with his daughter. She said her son was divorced and had custody
of his daughter, who now is staying with her other grandparents.
"He spent many, many hours with his daughter," Carol
THORPE said.
"He was her world and she was his life. He did so many things
with her. He built her a go-kart. You name it and she had it."
THORPE said her son was a handyman and had gutted and fixed up
old homes in Saint Thomas, one of which he lived in.
Crime tape surrounded the front and back entrances of the Manx
Arms yesterday.
Saint Thomas residents interviewed yesterday didn't know there
had been a shooting.
"I didn't have a clue what happened," said a woman who lives
in a rear apartment unit above the bar. "I didn't hear a thing
when I was asleep."
Donny BURT, another apartment dweller, said he was up until 3
a.m., but didn't hear anything.
He called THORPE's shooting isolated, saying people don't usually
pull out guns in Saint Thomas.
The operator of a nearby business said the shootings underscore
the dangers of bar life -- even in Saint Thomas.
"I tell my son all the time you never know what will happen in
a bar. I tell him to keep his mouth shut because somebody always
wants to fight."
Saint
Thomas police Const. Glenn
HODGSON said police were called
to the Manx Arms at 12: 50 a.m. but wouldn't say what happened
in the bar before the shooting.
He said police couldn't comment further because they're prohibited
from discussing cases in which the Special Investigations Unit
is involved.
The bar's management could not be reached for comment.
The Special Investigations Unit, a civilian agency, investigates
circumstances involving police and civilians that have resulted
in serious injury, sexual assault or death.
BLISS said seven investigators have been assigned to yesterday's
shooting.
The last homicide in Saint Thomas involved a husband and wife.
Soodarsan BAJRANGIE-
SINGH, then 62, was convicted in 1996 of
the second-degree murder of his wife, Madeen
SINGH, then 58.
She was shot 13 times in the backyard of their Centre Street
home. SINGH was sentenced to life in prison.
Saint Thomas police were last involved in a shooting in 1985, when
two city police officers shot Gary
STEVENSON, 36, in his backyard
on Churchill Street after he pointed a gun at them.
