Scarborough man, 22, was target, police say
By Armina LIGAYA and Timothy APPLEBY, Page A13
Reynaldo SANTOS was letting the dog out early on Sunday morning when he made a grisly discovery in his backyard.
Near the back door of the family's Scarborough home lay the lifeless body of his 22-year-old son, Patrick.
An official police statement said the young Mr. SANTOS showed "obvious signs of trauma." A police source who asked not to be identified said the young man's hands had been bound.
"We don't believe it was a random attack. We believe he was targeted," said Detective-Sergeant Dean BURKS. A postmortem examination has been conducted, but the cause of death has not been released.
While police believe Mr. SANTOS was targeted, there's little doubt that Piratheep THARMAKULASINGAM, 25 -- slain just hours after Mr. SANTOS's body was found and one of three people killed on Sunday -- was singled out for death.
Mr. THARMAKULASINGAM was walking along Huntsmill Boulevard, near Warden and McNicoll Avenues, when a car jumped the curb and hit him, police said. The driver then jumped out, attacked him repeatedly with a machete, hopped into the vehicle and fled.
Police responding to a 911 call at 10 a.m. found him injured on the grass. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead. A postmortem examination showed Mr. THARMAKULASINGAM died from "sharp force injuries to the neck," police said.
A warrant has been issued for Sujan ABEYEWARDENE, 19, of Richmond Hill, on a charge of first-degree murder.
Also yesterday, police identified Christopher James WHITE/WHYTE, 35, as the third person killed Sunday. Mr. WHITE/WHYTE, of no fixed address, was on King Street West in Parkdale when he was shot to death.
On Bridlington Street, where the SANTOS family lives, neighbours say they were shocked to find their suburb swarming with police early Sunday.
The SANTOS home, a white, sixties-era backsplit with a garden and a swing set in the back, has been sealed with police tape.
"You think you live in a secluded pocket… you never think something like this is going to happen here," said Wayne BRIDGER, a retired fireman who lives across the street.
The SANTOS family are "very nice, very friendly," but keep to themselves, he said.

ADAM/ADAMS, Margaret Annie (née NORTHCOTT)
Born on May 30, 1922 in Sarnia. Passed away on Monday, February 6, 2006 in Lindsay. She was the proud daughter of John and Iva NORTHCOTT. Margaret had two sisters June Marie and Francis Mae and four brothers Jack, Cecil, Bill and Lyle all who have predeceased her. She was much loved by her step dad, James Llewellyn BURLEY, who most often called her "Annie". Margaret was married for more than 50 years to her husband Lloyd ADAM/ADAMS, who died a short three months ago. The most endearing thought by those left behind is that Lloyd and Margaret are happily romping through a meadow or finding a new adventure to explore. They are; The Reverend Dr. Janet BRIGHAM- TUROWSKI and Gunter, Cheryl and James CRICKS, James and Brenda SHERRELL, Shelley and Carl MAKELA, and the late John NORTHCOTT. Margaret's great nieces and nephews are; Christi and Wayne CRESS, Chase ANDERSON, Hillary and Ben ANDERSON, Brian MAKELA, Christa and Marc JONES, Jamie Sue SHERRELL, Jay SHERRELL, Larry NILES, and Kevin NILES. Her great-great-nieces and nephews are Ben, Brooke, wyatt, Bailee, Blake, Cameron, the late little Nicholas, and Myia. THIBODEAU, Phyllis (née BURNELL) (1914-2006)
After a long and eventful life, Phyllis passed away quietly following a brief illness, on December 8. Predeceased by Leland, her husband of 52 years, she is survived by her son Jim and his wife Rose, daughter Helen, and grandchildren Suzanne and Stewart. In Wales she leaves her brother Henry BURNELL, dear sister-in-law Doris and two generations of nieces and nephews. She will be remembered by Leland's brother Ted, sisters Ruth, Helen, Dorothy and Edna, sister-in-law Janet and many nieces and nephews. Following her marriage to Leland, a Canadian serviceman, she came to Canada as a war bride in 1946. Though fiercely passionate about her adopted country, to the end of her life she missed the wild seashore of Porthcawl. Many thanks to Doctor KITA and the kind, caring nursing staff at Providence Health Care. Special thanks to Felisa for all her help. A Memorial will be held at the Simple Alternative Funeral Centre, 275 Lesmill Road on Saturday, December 16 at 11 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a children's charity.
