It is with great sadness that the family of Randy BAKER announces his passing on Friday, June 30th, 2006 at Norfolk General Hospital, Simcoe in his 64th year, after a brief battle with cancer. He is the beloved husband of 33 years of Alice (O'NEIL) BAKER; loving and proud father of Tara BINT (Troy,) Kitchener, and Tiffanie, Exeter. Dear Opa to Zachary, Ryan and Marissa BINT. He will also be sadly missed by brothers Henry (Nelly), Bayfield, Simon, Drayton, and sister-in-law Sandra GRACEY (George,) Listowel. Predeceased by parents Jacob and Jane (BRAAD) BAKER (1998 and 1994) Saint Mary, brother John (1989), Embro, sisters-in-law Ena (2001), Embro and Janet (2005), Stratford, and father and mother-in-law Lyle and Glorena (BURDON) O'NEIL (1998) Guelph. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins. Also, greatly missing "the Acting Mayor of Lutesville" are his close Friends Gary and Sharlene ARMSTRONG, Bill and Theresa DUNKLEY and Gray and Barb STEWARDSON, all fellow members for many years of the "Waterford Breakfast Club", and travel companions, Archie and Maria DEMEULENAERE. Randy was born in the Netherlands and emigrated to Canada with his family in 1948, eventually settling in the Stratford area. After graduating from the University of Guelph, Randy worked in Horticultural Research in Guelph and Simcoe for almost 30 years, retiring in 1997. As well, he owned and operated Baker Greenhouses for 26 years. Over the years, Randy has been associated with many groups and organizations but since his retirement he has concentrated his time and energy to the Long Point Branch of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists and to the Waterford Lions Club where he is the Past President. Cremation has taken place but family and Friends are invited to a visitation at the Thompson-Mott Funeral Home, Waterford on Friday, July 7th, 2006 from 7-9 p.m. Lions Service to take place at 6: 30 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 8th, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Waterford United Church, Main St. S. Husband, father, radio amateur. Born October 2, 1920, in Stony Stratford, England. Died April 23, in Kingston, Ontario, of congestive heart failure, aged 85.
Had you asked Bernie in his younger years, he would have described himself, with a twinkle in his eyes, as a male war-bride.
He was conceived in a passing moment of joy -- post-First World War homecoming -- and raised an only child in a household he would later describe as emotionally barren. By his own measure, he was a somewhat obstinate youth, who took refuge from the harshness of home and school in voracious reading and learning -- habits he maintained the rest of his life.
Bernie quit school at 16 to take a job as an office "tea boy," but soon landed a technical apprenticeship position with the General Post Office telephone service. About the same time, he earned an amateur (ham) radio operator licence. His early duties with the General Post Office focused on wiring England for war readiness. He put his radio skills to use copying intercepted Morse code radio transmissions for the Bletchley Park code-breakers. In the early 1940s, he enlisted with the Royal Air Force and was shipped to Guelph, Ontario, for training as a wireless operator/air gunner.
Bernie never tired of telling the story of one fateful moonlit evening in 1942 on a ferry from Port Dalhousie to Toronto. "Do you have the time?" he asked the gorgeous redhead. "Oh, are you English?" she asked in return. One month later, on her 21st birthday, Bernie and Margaret FERGUSON were engaged. For evermore, Moonlight Becomes You was his song for her.
Bernie spent the first three years of married life as wireless operator/air gunner on a Wellington bomber, 40 Squadron, stationed in Italy. At the age of 23, he was a veteran of 37 sorties. Through 1945-46, he was stationed in Egypt and Palestine.
He and Margaret reunited in England following the war, and Katie, the first of five daughters, was born in 1947. The family emigrated to Ottawa in 1948, where Bernie was hired as a technician with Bell Telephone Co. of Canada. Daughter Liz was born in Ottawa. Anne, Marian and Jane followed after Bernie's transfer to Bell's Kingston operation.
The girls love telling stories of growing up with Bernie as disciplinarian (or would-be disciplinarian), shaping the good character of his brood. Such was his reputation with the young men of Kingston's Strathcona Park, that his "no boys in the backyard" policy stood unchallenged.
Bernie wanted his daughters to grow up to be the fine, independent women that they are, so tools and toolboxes were provided. The girls' prowess as drivers and, by extension, his prowess as a driving instructor, remained for him a source of great pride. (Away from the girls, Bernie was quick with a colourful joke or a story involving a far-off relative of Margaret's.)
As boyfriends gave way to sons-in-law, Bernie opted for early retirement from Bell. He continued his long-time involvement with the Kingston and national amateur radio organizations, but also lent his unfaltering energy, commitment and talented hands to the benefit of numerous Kingston community organizations, most particularly the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes. In his quiet time at home he traced both sides of the family tree and penned his war-time memoirs.
Bernie and Margaret, his "first wife" of 63 years, presided over Easter dinner one week before his mercifully quick departure. Liz, daughter No. 2, asked him to comment on his 85-year journey from only child to patriarch. Surrounded by four generations of family and with a look of peace clearly in his eyes, he described himself simply as a lucky man.
David MORRIS, one of three BURDSALL sons-in-law named David, is married to Marian, daughter No. 4.

Loving mother and grandmother, passed away April 27, 2006 at Bluewater Health Mitton Street Site at the age of 81. She is predeceased by her husband Kenneth F. WALKER (1992) and her son Frank (March 3, 2006). She will be sadly missed by her daughter and son-in-law Norma-Jean and Bryan HILL; daughter-in-law Anita WALKER and 5 grandchildren Darcy, Casey and Jordy BERRY, Eric WALKER and Laura (Matt) PIGGOTT. Ruth was born at the Kerton Farm at the London and Forest Townlines, June 27, 1924 and was the last surviving child of Bertha (BURGAR) and Henry KERTON. She was predeceased by 8 siblings - Lloyd (1967), Amy (1908), Elbie (1909), Clayton (1985), Mary (1988), Ella (1975), Norma (1943), and Vernon (1946). We will miss her company, Sunday dinners, coffee and butter tarts and her good-bye waves from the picture window and the front porch. Ken and Bev know he will be missed by the many Friends and co-workers from his 36 years as Public Relations Officer and later General Manager of the Ontario Wheat Board. He was a proud veteran of World War 2 as a Sergeant in the Royal Canadian Air Force serving on a B24 Liberator squadron stationed in India. Still an acting Past President of Chatham Branch 28 Legion-Royal Canadian Air Force Wing 411, and will be missed by close friend John BURGESS and all his Wing colleagues who enjoyed reading his regular newsletters and were thankful for his tireless dedication to their group. To those who came to know and love Ross as a friend and neighbour, who shared in his creative talents and welcomed the chance to visit with him daily, Ken and Bev will be forever grateful. She immigrated to Canada as a War Bride and arrived in Canada at Pier 21 in Halifax eventually moving to Stratford in 1957. Sue was an active member of St. Stephen's Anglican Church, Stratford. Beloved wife of Frederick WIDENMAIER who predeceased her on June 10, 2002. Loving mother of David WIDENMAIER and his wife Linda, of Toronto, Edna WIDENMAIER and her husband Michael TYNER of Chemanus, British Columbia and Christine BURGESS and her husband Mike of Zurich. Gaye was a cherished and endeared Nana who doted on her grand kids; Letitia and Justin LEMAY, Terilynn, Emmy and Jeffy WASSON and Jake BURGESS. Cherished daughter of Alice and step-daughter to Jack MARRIOTT. Sweet and beloved sister to Gerry and Karen MERO, Jim MERO and Dulcie and Tom SINNETT all of Goderich. Margaret▲ was a longtime employee of Henderson and Lang Bookbinders and McDougall and Pollard Printers. Friends may call at the Hardy-Lee Funeral Home, Harriston on Friday, March 17 for visitation from 1: 30 p.m. until the time of memorial service at 3: 00 p.m. Following cremation, interment in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto. After a lengthy illness, at the Jewish General Hospital on February 5, 2006. Passed away peacefully at the age of 93. She will be sadly missed by both family and Friends, especially by her son Tom and daughter-in-Law Maryse, her three loving and very special granddaughters Karine, Nathalie and Julie. Predeceased by her loving husband Roy, sister and brothers, Freda, Cyril and Harold, sister-in-law Raye and brother-in-law Harold. Many thanks go to the nursing staff and doctors of the 6th floor of the Jewish General Hospital for their care and guidance.
