Father, veteran won't march in first Remembrance Day parade
On March 28th of this year, Peter
MELROSE died.
He was a gentle man and he was my father.
Born in Scotland in 1921 to David and Mary
MELROSE, he lived
in Collingwood until he joined the Navy in 1939.
Like many young men and women of his day, he left home to fight
for Canada. He returned safely. And for the next 65 years he
lived a good life.
He didn't talk much of the war until his later years.
He had decided that he would march for the first time ever in
the Collingwood Remembrance Day parade in 2006 with his war medals.
You won't see him in this year's ceremonies, but he will be there
in spirit.
His wife, children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren will never forget.

Corps and later was an Area Counsellor with Veterans Affairs
Canada. Former Commodore of the Oakville Yacht Squadron, Fred
was an accomplished sailor and keen competitor who was happiest
whiling away the hours on boat repairs and racing with family
and Friends. He embraced the gifts and challenges that life offered
with unwavering kindness, generosity, fairness and a ready smile.
Special thanks to the entire staff of K3E and especially to Chito

care and support for 12 years. Visitation will be held at the
Oakview Funeral Home, 56 Lakeshore Rd. W. (one block east of

will be held Monday, May 15, 2006 at 1 p.m. Saint Paul's United
Church, 454 Rebecca Street, Oakville followed by interment at
Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations
may be made to the Veterans Comfort Fund at Sunybrook Hospital
or the War Amps of Canada. The words of William Arthur Ward sum
up Fred's remarkable attitude - "the pessimist complains about
the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjust
the sails." His compassion, integrity and good nature were an
inspiration to everyone he met. He will be missed greatly and
remembered fondly.
